Rated 3 out of 5 by from They do the job just fine....BUT I used these gaiters on two separate hikes in Yosemite last year totaling 112 miles. They work great especially if you're hiking in trail runners or any type of tenis shoe. They fit snug and tight and I never got any tiny pebbles in my shoes which is a life saver when on those rocky switchbacks above tree line. With that being said, they are made with cheap material and won't last long. The eyelets where the pull strings run through ripped out on my second hike and the material started to fray and eventually ripped. You might get 150-200 miles out of them before they're done. I'll give them 5 stars for purpose, 3 for quality, and a 1 star rating for price. Way too expensive for the low miles you get out of them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are worth it I bought new shoes (Salomon Evasion CS WP) and these gaiters because I got sick and tired of sand sneaking its way into my hike. I typically hike in Merrel All-Out-Blaze Aero's (which are water shoes with a ton of mesh) and sand come in constantly . Living in Florida, the humidity builds up insane amounts of morning dew that soak into my soaks. Having moist sand grind through my socks is enough to make me unhappy. These gaiters are the lid to my shoes that seal out the sand. Ohhh the sand. Every local trail here are equestrian trails and that's basically like hiking down a sugar sand road. I lived down a 2.5 mile dirt road for 7 years. I hate sand. It gets in your food. It gets in your hair... and most annoyingly it gets in your shoes. There will never been sand in my shoes again... While I hike of course. Yesssssss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes walking and hiking great! I live in Alaska, and we use gravel on the roads and trails in the winter. It's great during the actual winter, but come breakup (spring) all that gravel is sitting on the sidewalks and trails, just waiting for you to walk along and take it home with you. These gaiters are perfect. Lightweight, comfortable to wear with trail shoes, and they keep out the stones. I've used them three times on walks and hikes 5-8 miles each, and have had to stop and shake out my shoes exactly zero times. Frankly, I am in love with them and we are thinking of running away together.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted 4 hours.. i was on the hunt for some Gaiters, just to keep debris out of my boots. I did what i would call and EASY 8 mile hike in the redwoods. Soft, under story hiking trails, before i finished, the strap wrapping under the boot broke. I really do not recommend them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Defective I bought these at my local-ish REI today after a hike I took yesterday that left my trail shoes full of dirt and pebbles. When I got them home, I went to try them on over my shoes, and I found one of the straps was sewn on incorrectly. The strap twists, creating a small bulge wherever it's twisted. If the twist shifts under the shoe, I'm afraid it'll get worn out too quickly. Plus, it's just annoying. For $30, I want something that's not defective.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, but runs a little small. I bought a pair a few weeks ago and have been using them on at least 10 hikes. First off the fit runs a little small (I bought the L/XL) and I am having problems getting them going over my pant legs and is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Everything else I love. My pants leg are no longer being covered in mud at the end of a hike. They are short enough to stay in place and they do not sweat my legs, so far I have hiked in 70 degree weather in FEBRUARY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent to keep rocks and sand out I used these on a three day backpacking trip on the Lost Coast in California hiking on the beach non stop. I never once got a rock or any sand in my shoes. They were easy to set up, light and didn't get in the way. They are also a bit water repellant so when some water splashed up on my shoes it helped keep it out too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect match for my trail runners I bought these lightweight shorty gaiters to go with my saucony peregrine trail runners for my ultralight hiking kit. They fit and look great and best of all weigh 1.5 oz for the pair. Strongly recommend for your 3 season hiking needs.

Pictures are lacking here. Are these a solid "tube" that you pull on over the toe of your shoe, past your heel, and slide up to your ankle? Or is their a velcro strip (that is not pictured) such that you wrap these around your ankle and secure together?

Asked by: pvonau
Each gaiter is one solid sleeve with no openings on the sides or back.

I need a pair of low gaiters to hike the canyons of Utah which are loaded with dreaded, long, sharp stickers. Will the stretchy fabric in the Activator REI gaiters repell these little nuisances? Or should I look at the OR Rocky Mt. Low gaiters?

Asked by: Zooman
These gaiters are a good choice for keeping out stickers, burrs, and various other kinds of debris.

My normal shoe size is men's 9, my hiking boot is men's 9.5. Will the lg/xlg gaiter be too big as it's on the cusp or should I go with small/med??

Asked by: rwooz52
We recommend a size L/XL in order for them to fit over your boots.

Asked by: countrypastor2000
Based on the shoe sizes, both children would use the S/M size.
