Rugged Gaiters

I was unable to try them in the snow due to when I received them, but I used them on an Eastern Sierra backpacking trip. I received a size large, wear a size 10 shoe, and am 5’10”. They were easy to put on and I liked the extra Velcro piece on the bottom which made them feel more secure. Both the show hook and Velcro are very sturdy. I used them to protect my legs while going cross-country through brush and they didn’t show any damage. They also stayed securely in place and closed. The height provided good protection and I expect them to be high enough to protect in most snow situations. The top was a little tight on my calf, but I recognize that I have larger claves than most. They were also very hot for spring/summer hiking.

Great for hiking in wet, rocky or brushy condition

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. First, they arrived a little off season so I missed testing them out in the snow during winter months, and it is not yet hiking season here, so I have not tested them in the mountain weather yet (maybe next month!). My review is based on how easy they were to put on and take off with my pants and boots, the fit, the materials and my overall impressions of the item. The material is very thick and durable while still being thin enough to prevent bulk, and will hold up to rocks and abrasion well. The velcro has a lot of stick to it and you have to pull pretty hard to pry it apart at first. I don't see the velcro wearing out too quickly. The only downside here is the weight is somewhat heavy (9oz) if you like backpacking and want lightweight stuff to pack. I'd just make sure you will need these before bringing with. They were easy to put on and take off by opening the front seam and wrapping them around my leg, then securing the strap under my boots and tightening up. This is nice because you don't want to try to wiggle them on over your boot in a hurry. The cinch around the calf had me confused at first (you press in on the sides of the clasp to open rather than pushing down in the center) but once I figured it out it was fast and easy, and it easily pulls tight around the calf with one hand. I have pretty muscular calves and this still had room to loosen or tighten. The hook that secures the gaitor down onto your laces to keep them in place works great on a flat lace. I didn't try it with a round lace but think it would work fine. The top of the gaitor does hit a little higher on the boot though (midfoot), so you will still need a water proof boot to prevent getting wet since the toe and top midfoot part will be exposed to the elements. I am 5'1" and wear a 7.5 boot. I got them in a size small and paired with them regular hiking pants. They could easily fit over a thicker pant though. I can't wait to try them out in the elements!

Love these smart, sleek, and light weight Gaiters!

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I really think these gaiters are cool and am looking forward to being able to use them regularly - perhaps in the fall. As it is, there has not been an opportunity for me to activate with them as I was out of town for a few weeks when there seemed to be some rain in NYC. Now that I am back temperatures are in the 90s and 100s - it's a heatwave this week. I also do not have any treks scheduled on my calendar in the near future. However, I tried them on and really love the ease of the fit, the sleek look, and light weight. I know I will be using these quite a bit in the fall.

Great, protective gaiters

These are great! I use them for search and rescue in some very rough terrain, and they've protected me and held up well. They have held up against fields of thorny bushes, and have also done well at keeping ticks out. Yes, they're hot in the summers, but that's the trade-off for having such a protective pair of gaiters.
