Good details, poor handling
I wanted to love this kayak, as the attention to detail is so promising. However, it is the major things that failed me. This kayak is extremely hard to steer and hold a straight track, particularly with two adult paddlers. Over the 2715 summer my family tried multiple combinations of paddlers and weather conditions, and every time the paddlers were in a fight to maintain a straight course. I am a very experienced kayaker, wanting to take my 3 year old son, my husband and other adults for short distance cruises. Every time, except for when my son was duffing in the bow seat, was a horrible experience. I am so disappointed to have this kayak.
Great family kayak
I purchased this kayak in 2007 to paddle around with my young daughter. It's been great! The adjustable seats and foot rests are very comfortable. With one paddler in the stern position, the kayak still tracks pretty straight. Two child seats can be added to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children. This kayak glides with ease through the water. It is durable, although the bottom was softened some over the years. I have added fishing rod holders and use it for fishing. It has seen use mainly in lakes and slow moving areas of rivers (Potomac, Occoquan). Due to it's size it is a little ackward for one person to load on top of an SUV. A set of dolly wheels make it easy to move to/from the water. For me, it has been a great investment and has provided fun, memorable times in nature with my daughter and friends.
Perfect, Sturdy, Spacious, and Cool Tandem
Perfect for when you want to work together rather than apart. Great for liesurely touring and/or camping excursions. Also the center of mass is such that one can safely stand in the hull to turn around in the cockpit, change seats with your partner, or easily climb back in from deep water swimming. Great design appearance - beautiful blue with cloud appearance. Plenty of dry storage for a day on the lake. If it's just two of you, there's plenty of room in the rear cockpit where a doggie or a child might otherwise sit for a medium sized cooler big enough for many beers, bottles of wine, and/or a picnic. The hull remains connected from cockpit to cockpit which offers ample room and comfort. Other comforts are the electronics dry storage in the bow and the cup holders in bow and stern. The stern cockpit also hosts a nice place next to the cupholder for a small WiFi speaker or picnic plate. Finally, the right is just right for two when lifting, the otherwise long boat, up and off transport. My wife, doggie, picnic, Subaru, and I all love it!
Great Family Boat
I am 6'1" 270lbs. I have been using this boat regularly for the past year with my three children ages 6, 4, and 2. Yep, Its me and the three babies all in this boat comfortably cruising mostly flat water, with some class I/II rapids. It's a lot of boat for me to maneuver with no other active paddlers, but with my size/strength I make it work. I can load this boat down with a dry well full of lunch, snacks, water, and gear for a day on the water, all four of us, and we are very comfortable! I have yet to capsize, so I cannot speak to the ease of recovery. I have to sit back as far as possible to allow room for 2 yr old on child seat. Sitting centered in boat would help with weight distribution and maneuverability. My only complaint is the seat straps are not strong enough to keep seat back in position. Quality is excellent. I love this boat. It has been exactly what our family needs and will continue to serve us for years to come.
