Great Durability - Lacking Features

First trip with these pants was for a ski mountaineering trip that involved a lot of bushwhacking! Like 8 hours of thick bushwhacking, with crawling on the ground under logs. There was not a mark on the pants, held up great. They were also fairly waterproof in the snow sections. I tried the regular gamma pant on in store to find my size then went online to order the longs, and was excited to see they had a straight leg version. I found the regular a little tight in the thighs. These fit much bigger than the Gamma pants and probably should have sized down. But the mobility with the extra thigh space is fabulous. The adjustable waist clip unfortunately sits under the waist belt, which caused a hot spot. These pants also don’t have a lace hook, unlike the regular gamma pants which was disappointing. Especially because it is a wide bottom, would have been nice to keep some of the debris out. Would have also appreciated a drawcord at the bottom and islets to attach cord around the bottom of the boot. Speaking of nice to haves, would love zipper thigh vents too, they were warm at lower elevations, but perfect weight in the alpine. It’s disappointing to pay so much for a technical pant and not have all the add ons that other brands have. Still gets three stars for the durability and thigh space.

Hi Robyn. Thanks for sharing this detailed review of the Gamma MX Straight Leg Pant. We’re glad to hear they held up so well through tough terrain—durability and mobility are at the core of this design. That said, your feedback on missing technical features like a lace hook, hem drawcord, and ventilation is incredibly valuable. These details can make a big difference on demanding missions, and we’ve passed your comments to the design team for consideration in future iterations. We appreciate you taking the time to highlight both the strengths and the areas for improvement.

Excellent quality

When riding my mobility scooter in the fall/winter, I get cold very easily so I decided to purchase these pants for an extra layer of warmth. They are warm enough when wearing leggings underneath but I don’t think they will be warm enough below -1C for someone who cannot walk. They are true to size. They are a perfect fit at the waist (I usually wear a size 27 in jeans) with enough room everywhere else to wear them over a pair of leggings. They are the perfect length in the short style for my height at 157cm. The reason for the 4 stars is the snap closure will unsnap sometimes when bent over. A button closure would be better.

Disappointed

I really wanted to love them. I had an earlier version from 2018, the fit and material were much nicer. Of the old version, the material looks and feels high end, well worth the money. The legs are truly straight with cinch-able hems. They look really stylish with either hiking boots or casual boots. The legs of this new version, although described as straight leg , are actually slightly tapered , which make them look odd with hiking boots. Also, with a much higher price , the material of this new version feels very plastic and cheap, not nearly as warm as the older version. Very disappointed.

Yes!!! Winter pants that work

Love these pants! Cool weather hiking, climbing and cross country skiing are where these pants excel. Comfortable relaxed fit, water resistant and a warm fuzzy lining to block the wind. The only struggle I’ve had with these is the snap closure at the waist can pop open if I bend over and the waist gets stressed at all. Grateful for the long length offered; wish it was offered in the size 2 though. These are my go to everyday pants in the winter. Either with thermals under for really cold days, or as is for the moderate chill. Thank you for making the wide leg that goes over my boots!

the only pants I ever wear

So comfortable and with a flattering fit, I only wear other pants when I have to. Stretchy, breathable and with pockets that actually fit all the snacks a little heart could dream of. Great for travel, hiking, or casual nights out with friends who won't judge you for wearing the same thing everyday.

Great winter hiking pants

I bought these for cool weather backcountry camping and hiking and I love them - they look good, fit great, leave room for wearing a base layer underneath, and are comfy and warmer than my summer hiking pants. The one bummer is the snaps which pop open almost every time I bend over to tie my shoe, get something out of my tent, etc, yet somehow are also hard to do up. A button might not look quite as clean but would be more practical. The sizing is fairly generous - I think my measurements are closer to an 8 but a 6 fits me better.

Why?

Hi Arcteryx, For the longest time I love your Gamma MX pant. I bought it in every color, especially in the old days when short version was so rare. Can I ask why you removed the metal buckle for women version but kept it in men? The button alone is not enough to hold the pant for hiking, or for certain moves. Also, thanks for revising to straight leg again coz the newer ones were so baggy it lost its sleek look. Pls bring back metal buckets and more athletic looks please!

Hello there, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We truly appreciate your long‑time support for the Gamma MX Pant and your insight into how the design changes have affected your experience. The shift from a metal buckle to a button closure on the women’s version was intended to reduce bulk and improve comfort under a harness or pack belt, but we understand that for certain movements and for hiking, the added security of the buckle made a meaningful difference. We’re also glad to hear the return to a straighter, more athletic leg profile feels like a step in the right direction. Your request to bring back the buckle and maintain a more streamlined, performance‑oriented fit is incredibly valuable, and we’ll be sure to share it with our product team as they continue refining the Gamma line.

Some issues on this design

This pant is a great weight for winter alpine climbing but would be a million times better with 2 design changes.... 1. add grommets to the cuffs so external elastic can be added for snow climbing - the elastic closure system does NOT work in snow! 2. fix the button closures, please! the buttons are flimsy and do not stay shut. The older snap/belt closure was so much better. So close but yet so far... hope they can improve the design for next winter

Hi there, thank you for sharing your feedback on the Gamma MX Straight Leg Pants. We're happy to hear that you found these pants worked well for winter alpine climbing, and we appreciate you mentioning specific areas where we could improve the design. We understand how cuff grommets for external elastic can be useful in snow climbing scenarios, and we’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the button closures. Wonderful and good quality pants!

I own one pair of Gamma MX pants and really like them. I placed an additional order for two pairs of Gamma MX Straight Leg pants in size 2R, in two colors (Nightscape and Tatsu). The strange thing is that both pairs are the same product and size 2R, yet the inseam length differs. I would appreciate it if you could provide pants with consistent inseam lengths to avoid disappointing customers.

True to size, but shorter than expected

The 4-S fit me perfectly in the waist/hips, but was surprisingly shorter than expected - along with the tapered leg made me my legs look even shorter. I usually go for the short length if that’s an option, but the inseam on these pants was just barely 27 inches when I measured it, not 29 like it’s listed. A little disappointing, but now I know I can probably just go for the regular length.
