I’ve tried several different styles of headlamps over the years with our scout troop. This headlamp cost a little more than what I was used to, but I didn’t realize how much the difference could be. The light beam is consistently good, and the strap is amazing compared to what I am used to. I now use my headlamps while running after dark. I am used to either having to adjust the strap so tight that it gives me a headache or else it ends up slipping down while I’m running. This strap is super easy to adjust, and it’s elasticity is perfect where is supportive, but not super tight. Great product!!
The changes they made compared to previous versions of the Tikka model are poorly designed and unfortunate. The mechanism that keeps the strap taught doesn't work well, it is always loosening. The design of the headlamp/light is bulky and the swivel just doesn't work as well either, plus it feels uncomfortable on the forehead. I have had a few Petzl Tikkas myself and loved them more than other brands. After my wife's old one broke I bought her this one to replace it before knowing about the design changes. As a basic headlamp it still functions and works okay, just the new design is awful compared to the old versions.
I am a long distance hiker, so first impression is the headlamp is a little heavy. It’s important to read the box directions, and the paper directions. One button area for on/off is simple. Operation is a little awkward when switching from white to red. Didn’t realize there was a lock feature and so Initially I thought the batteries were dead, but it turns out headlamp was locked. White and red lights are bright and has a good range while you’re walking through a campground or on trails. Like the glow in the dark feature!
It is definitely bright on highest setting. I think it is sometimes a little difficult to turn on and switch from white light to red
I made the mistake of buying two of these. The buckle design is horrible. It requires tension to lock a pin in the buckle. It is over-engineered and does not actually work in function. It fell off multiple times in with my gear while camping, I miraculously found it numerous times until I ended up loosing both. Now the strap does not hold in place. Petzl normally makes quality products, but this is a fail. You cannot get a replacement other than an entire strap, and the buckle will fall off again. Honestly can't believe they produced this design.
Petzl really nailed it with this headlamp. I’ve been using Petzl for a lot of years now and this is the best I think they’ve ever done. The red light is bright and focused and the other lights are wide and very bright. They also added a much needed lock so it doesn’t turn on when stowed in your pack. All in all I couldn’t be happier with this light. Im going to get one or two more to keep around. I’ve used other brands and Petzl has always been best in class.
A comparison between the Tikka 350 and my old Energizer Vision 300 is the best review I could do here. Quick summary: buy the Petzl if you have to have a hard core climbing brand with minimalist styling, buy the Energizer if you want something easier to use at half the price. The Petzl Tikka 350 (Lumens) Headlamp is a premium product in terms of cost, form, fit & finish, and tech styling. My old Energizer Vision 300 lumen headlamp doesn't look as good, cost half as much, is easier to use, and has an extra feature I value a lot: a green light mode. I still can't get the Tikka to operate correctly even half the time due to it's confusing and non-intuitive single button system that's programmed to do different things depending on how long it's pressed and what it's last state was. Sometimes you turn it off when you want to increase the brightness or switch to red, and sometimes it wouldn't turn on (pressing too long? too short?). By comparison, the Energizer with two buttons is 100% simple and repeatable - press the on/off labelled button to control the white light, press the 2nd button to cycle through red, flashing red, green options. Petzl could have programmed the single button to cycle linearly through each of it's options. While they did include two useful features, a lock to prevent draining the batteries, and battery indicator, the usability issue was still a deal breaker for me. A headlamp is frequently used at the end of a long tiring day and should never be this hard to use!
Disappointed with this one. Over 50 years I have used and abused many headlamps and found Petzl to be one of the best. The directions are quite difficult to understand. I felt like I was going to break it just trying to open the battery compartment sitting at my kitchen table. I dread the thought of trying to do that under less than Ideal conditions. Its also kind of tricky to switch to the red functions, again if I needed red flashing, would I be able to find it in a cold dark storm? On the good side it looks like the difficult to open battery compartment has really good water seals which has been a problem in the past.
Whereas my knees won’t allow me to do any more 70 mile backpacking trips, all my gear gets used daily in general life. I liked this headlamp so much that I bought a spare for me and another as a gift. I unfortunately had to assume the responsibility of walking the dog due to wife’s injury, having tools make life enjoyable. I can now walk her at night without having to carry a flashlight to find her waste. Also always illuminated where I walk or look. I keep it on low so as to not destroy my night vision. It really comes in handy during power outages as it frees my hands up. Great also in tight quarters and under sinks too. I keep my spare in the car as nothing worse than trying to fix something at night with a flashlight.
I have been using Petzl head lamps for decades. This one is a piece of junk. As other one star reviews have stated, it's cheaply made, it's more difficult to change the battery, the swivel mechanism is a poor design. I can't believe that it made it though product testing. I am still annoyed that I had to pay for return shipping on the two that I purchased.
