Great covers
I bought these for commuting. The LED lights are amazingly bright. Waterproof to the point I need them. Fenders keep the spray down, so these are just getting falling precip. Would they be good fully submerged? Don't know, but I am riding a bike and not scuba diving. They also make a nice layer for temps down to 40F with summer weight shoes. With my SIDI Diablo winter boots, I have ridden them as a top layer down to 25F without discomfort. My only advice is size up. I wear a 45 and bought the large. It was darn tough getting them zipped up, and I could tell they wouldn't last long if I had kept them. I exchanged for a XL and they are perfect. Granted the winter boots are a little bigger, but the same issue with my summer shoes as well.
Underperform for the price and intended use
These do not perform as well as neoprene shoe covers when it comes to water resistance. Even in moderate rain my feet are soaked through. They do fit well and offer good thermal protection in above-freezing winter conditions and the LED in the heel is a great feature. However the power switch for the LED is very sensitive and it's very easy to accidentally turn the light on just from walking around. The kevlar panels at the front are showing significant wear after just one season and I feel I haven't walked all that much in these shoe covers. Overall these are pricey for what they offer.
SealSkinz Bike Shoe Covers
I purchased these because of several features I liked. The seams appeared strong, the material stretches comfortably, and the blinking light makes a great addition. I purchased extra large and still found it a snug fit over size 10 bike shoes fro REI. I have worn them four times. They keep my feet warm on cold days. I have yet to ride in rain so no leak problems. I find putting them on leg first then slipping them down over the shoe works great, rather than stretching over after the shoe is on, like most other styles. The velcro strap on bottom makes this possible. Great design!
Starting the day with dry feet
Initially had to exchange due to poor sizing guidelines on the item - I wear a women's 8.5 and definitely needed at least the Large, considered the XL. I've been using them for commuting in the rain for a few weeks - feet have been dry, fairly easy to get on and off now that I've got the correct size, but unfortunately a hole has already formed on the bottom of my non-dominant foot over a prominence of my cycling shoes where I rest my foot down at stops. We'll see how they last throughout the rest of the winter.
Really wish I could give five stars
There are about three reasons I dropped a star. While the LEDs are nice, they are somewhat inconsistent, to the point where I'm wondering if it's more useful to take them out of the overshoes until you're ready to go and then put them back in. Having the lights turn to random settings while putting the overshoes on is distracting. Although it's not as much of a problem as anything else, the underneath velcro straps are not long enough to go under my MTB shoes. Lastly, the sizing runs small. My MTB shoes are size 48 Shimano, and while I can get the overshoes over my shoes, proper positioning and zipping the sides closed is quite a struggle. They do in fact keep my feet warm, and when I can get it to work properly, the LEDs are great.
not so great
These covers run very small. I purchased the XL covers and they’re nearly impossible to get over my size 47 shoes. Once they’re on, they do block wind reasonably well and they do help retain a tiny bit of heat, but that’s it. They don’t handle water at all. They usually keep my shoes dry for about a mile, two if the rain is very light. Additionally, they’re not very durable. I’ve worn mine 5 times in about 6 months and they’re falling apart. I had much better luck with the Pi Elite covers, which don’t claim to be water resistant.
Perfect for wet cold rides
I commute to work in Seattle. Eight months of the year that commute involves rain and temps in the 40s. I've tried a lot of shoe covers and they tend to last about two months and either provide no water protection or no warmth. This product is the opposite. I get to work and my feet are dry and warm. The light is an added bonus (which is really nice when your main light's battery dies!). I've had them six months and they are holding up really well.
5 stars for weather performance, 2 for the lights
I have used these about 30 times and am very happy. I only have standard road cycling shoes (nothing winter specific) that I wear them with and just typical dress socks (haven't found the need to use my Smartwools) so that I still look awesome when I take the overshoes off. Weather performance: To combat the cold I use them if the temp is below 40 degrees and I am riding over 45 minutes, and anytime the temperature is below freezing. I have had no issues with numbness in my feet. Today I rode about 90 minutes round trip at negative 6 degrees windchill with no issues. It was snowing for part of the trip (I do have fenders). I have ridden 1-2 hours each way at temps from 10-20 degrees with no issues. Waterproofing is obviously not much of an issue when it's below freezing. I rode in light rain on a few occasions and stayed dry. I rode in heavy rain for about an hour when it was in the 30's. This is pretty much the only weather condition I do not enjoy riding in, but my shoes stayed completely dry the entire time. I am not sure why there are poor reviews on waterproofing??? *I always have my pants over the top of the cover. **By design, the bottom of the shoe is exposed to accommodate different shoes...perhaps by sizing up people are exposing ventilated portions of their shoes on the side??? My overshoe is flush with the bottom so I do not have this issue. Sizing: I wear size 10 shoe and bought the large. They are tight getting on at first. After several uses they have either slightly stretched or my skillz have increased, perhaps both. They fit great. Durability: I have not been gentle with these and they show no signs of wear. I have not washed them. I let them air dry and then brush off any debris (dirt, salt, etc.) Lights: When I went to purchase an overshoe I was only concerned with weather performance, not lights. Ironically, if these did not come with lights I would have given 5 stars. However, they do come with lights, and I was pumped for the added safety bonus in case my primary rear light went out on a ride. The vast majority of the times I have used the lights they turn off mid-ride. I assume it has something to do with pressure against my heel while pedaling (you press against the light for a few seconds to activate/deactivate). Side note - I was downtown today and a gentleman requesting money from passerby's loved the lights and asked if I'd like to trade kicks with him. I was flattered but am not currently in need of combat boots. So...great feature when they are working, they may even help you make some new friends, but I would not rely on the lights for your only source of rear visibility. I am very happy with the overshoe. If they continue to get low reviews I look forward to buying a backup pair at 50% off in a few months.
Great Product with a little Patience
I was concerned with the fit and durability because of some negative reviews. I wear size 13 shoe and was concerned that the XL would not fit. What I have found is that at first they were very difficult to get on my shoes, however by leaving them on the shoes for 24 hours, allowing them to stretch out, they become easier to put on. Also after putting them on multiple times you figure out how to do it to reduce the struggle. In the end they are very workable and you want a snug fit. Functionally they are great. I have used them in the rain of Seattle and the cold in Michigan (above freezing). They kept out the rain and help my feet stay warm on colder rides. So with a little patience I found them to be a great addition to my riding apparel. If and when they wear out I would definitely but them again. One other note, I tried several other brands and models of overshoes and found these to be superior to the others.
Did not live up to expectations
I got these and immediately took them on a 60 mile ride through a lot of rain. I got the XL pair because I wanted them to fit over some waterproof hiking shoes I was using pairing them with and they did manage to cover those up. Sadly about halfway through the ride I noticed that the inside of my hiking shoe was wet which meant not only had some water gotten through these covers but enough had made it through that it was also getting through the hiking shoe. I was still going to give these a 4 star review because the rain was really heavy and my feet were damp as opposed to soaked (I would have been miserable without them) but then I saw after I washed them that there was a small hole just above the lining on the bottom right. I am hoping this was just the pair I got as opposed to an indication of overall durability so I will try exchanging them instead of returning. If the new pairs holds up for a few cold/wet rides I will post an update.
