Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

REI lost my respect over these shorts
I bought these shorts approximately 18 months ago. I only wore them 5 or 6 times and the cheap plastic waist clasp button broke. A problem noted in other reviews. I took them to the local store today fully aware that REI changed their product guarantee years ago. However I assumed that since it was an REI branded product and it was clear that these were basically unused shorts with a faulty button that I would get some sort of support. I explained all of this to the local store manager and was told I was out of luck. For this reason I will never buy an REI branded product again as they will not stand behind their products after the year is up. Pretty disappointing! Also they need to change their design as it is not very sustainable to continue year after year to produce awesome shorts with a major fault that people may just throw away when their button breaks.
Great shorts!! Poor Button Design
I was looking for some new, better, light weight shorts for summer, and these really fit the bill. Nice feel, quick dry fabric, pockets in nice places. Unfortunately, after about a month or so, the front button broke. It is made of plastic, and held together with a Nanometer of plastic through the material. With enough pressure, or just wear and tear, the front of the button clasp popped right off, leaving the snap portion still attached! I returned them for a pair of Kuhl's (for around the same price), which have a metal rivet style button.
Problem with the button
My husband bought these pants b/c we were headed out for a camping trip the following week. When he tried them on at home, he had a hard time opening the button... then it broke. We returned them (tags still intact) w/o even knowing if they fit. I tried on the women's version at the store and also had a difficult time with the button, which is why I didn't purchase them. They asked if we wanted to exchange the pants and we declined since we thought it might happen again.
BEST. SHORTS.EVER
Aside from a major material failure I'm now experiencing (with the button, yes...) these Screeline shorts are the most comfortable, and best REI shorts I've ever purchased! They dry fast, the fabric is tough and doesn't fray like others, and best of all: it wicks moisture and doesn't let it stick to the skin! I have worn mine on 160mi backpack treks, and a 155mi canoe trek this summer in Quetico Provincial Park and I am desperate for a replacement made with the same fabric/overall design - and a new button that doesn't break off (the one used is nylon/plastic and doesn't last...)
Most Comfortable Shorts I Own
These shorts are super comfortable. They are stretchy, and feel very natural for me. I golf in them often, and wear them whenever they are clean. There is only one thing I don't like about them - I'm a lefty, and the rear pocket is on the right side of the bum. Putting anything in that pocket just feels wrong, so I don't use it, and therefore I don't have a good pocket for my wallet in these shorts. I would suggest adding a pocket on the left bum too, and then the issue would be resolved for everyone. No more lefty discrimination!
Great design and fabric, bad button snap
I might have rated these a 5, as the fabric is comfortable and design very good. In fact, I tried on a number of shorts at REI and liked these the best. However, the plastic button broke as soon as I got home. You can buy a metal button snap kit on Amazon for $5 and replace it, which is what I did. REI could improve this short with a metal snap, add a second back pocket and put zippers on both; the side zippered pocket on the right leg is too small, should be larger, and should be on each leg.
The snap will break
I wore these just a twice before the snap broke. The snap is too tight and poorly made. They do fit nicely, but I would only buy a pair if you plan to replace the snap before you use them. Luckily mine broke while dressing for a 3 day backpack trip, not on the trip. I returned them and bought another brand.
Loved the fit and style but button broken
I loved almost everything about this shorts, aside from the lack of a back left pocket. They fit well, were stylish enough for most situations, and had a nice integrated belt. Sadly, the button broke after about 2 months of use. This appears to be quite a common problem so I can't recommend these shorts.
Good Choice
This was a nice pick. Lightweight material, flat front, no baggy pockets, great fit. Very happy with the shorts.
Button on the full leg length pants break also
Like others whom posted here, I have only wore these pants five or so times and the button broke. Please see photo. And it happened at a very convenient time, a three week trip in India :(
