Defective sway cages make rack unsafe and unusable
After receiving heavier use than usual earlier this summer I noticed for the first time that one of the hooks on one of my anti-sway cages was bent (see photos). The cage with bent hook started slipping off the rack during short local trips. I replaced it with my other original cage and the same issue appeared. I assumed that the two original cages were getting old and weak so I ordered two new replacement cages from the manufacturer. I was planning a 400-mile roundtrip car drive with my bike on the rack and was delighted when the new cages arrived the day before my trip. On the return trip I noticed in my rear view mirror that my bike was tilting significantly. I pulled off the highway and discovered that the cage had fallen off the rack and that again one of the hooks was bent. I replaced the damaged cage with the other new one and after driving several miles I could again see my bike tilting. When I arrived home the second cage had also fallen off the rack due to bent hook. I love everything else about this rack. Super convenient to attach and detach, easy to mount and attach bikes, folds up easily to store, well worth the price. But the issue with the anti-sway cages failing renders the rack unsafe and unusable.
good but not that great
bought this a couple of weeks ago at the REI in Spokane. I am very pleased the rack is far more stable than the Thule Gateway it replaced. The straps on the Gateway busted and dumped our bikes on the road. The vinyl coated wire is rock solid and the way to keep them tight is well thought out too. I've watched the rack on washboard and as we leave the road to the trailhead and the rack an bikes stay stable. Unfortunately the spacing between the cradles is too close (6 inches) and the bike handle bars end up in the other bike. On our Trek 520s they end up in the wheel of the other bike. You really can't adjust the position of the cradles because they fit into notched out portion on the metal support arm. Not good. In addition one of the No sway cages pops out every time we load a bike and is therefore useless. We like the stability of the carrier. We like the ease of use of placing the rack on the car, taking it off and dropping the support arm when not hauling bikes. We really dislike the bikes being nestled into each other during transport. We are going to return the two bike option and pick up the three bike if it can handle our two road bikes. Maybe there is enough separation to avoid the handle bars being nestled into the wheel of the other bike on our road bikes.
Well design,but be careful
I really cant say anything bad about this product. However I had a situation where I Loosened up the right top cable to free-up a rear wiper blade I accidentally activated. So, while the bike was on the rack I loosened that cable, lifted the top right support to free the wiper blade. This directed all the pressure of the 3 other tighten cables to the bottom left corner resulting in a nasty little dent where the left bottom support was located. it was my fault, so never loosen the cables with a bike on it and loosen the cables in pairs, not just one cable. I'm sure somewhere in the instructions it tells you not to do this.
Perfect for road bikes
I bought this for my girlfriend and I to take our road bikes places, and this does it securely and in style. I love the vinyl covered wires and the secure locking mechanism. It is very easy to install. I have it on my 2017 VW Jetta, it is a little heavy so you must help push the trunk open, but I don't see that as a real issue. Other than that, it's perfect. I prefer the heavy duty build.
Cannot Recommend
The Raceway Pro 2 worked well for several months. However, it is quite heavy so on a sedan the trunk won't stay open if the rack is installed (Acura TL). More concerning is that the anti-sway stabilizer that secures around the seat tube failed at highway speeds once I was traveling about an hour. The bike was then only secured by rack's two arms strapped to the top tube and was flailing around until I could stop to change the failed stabilizer for the second one. Luckily, I was only carrying one bike. Several miles down the road the second stabilizer failed and I had to take the wheels off the bike and put inside my vehicle so that it would not potentially get damaged. Thule's warranty department could only send a replacement stabilizer, but it is the same material and is the same weak point of the rack.
Great rack; lousy sway cradles.
Bought the rack in 9/19 right before a short vacation to Cape Cod. The rack performed great on interstates during the five-hour drive, and its been great for daily racking near home. However, one sway cradle immediately would not stay in its fitting. The second one lasted until this spring. I tried adding a layer of duct tape to tighten the fitting. It kind of worked. One cradle has since been lost. I just use the cradle-straps sans cradles now. The sway cradles have been a chronic issue on every review forum I've read regarding this rack for years. For such a solid rack otherwise, Thule continues to ignore this universal design flaw in its sway cradles. What's up with that?
Great product. Exceeds expectations.
Securely attaches to trunk of Subaru Legacy. Need to lift trunk with rack attached to fasten lower clips to trunk. The mechanism to tighten the cables makes attachment easy, quick, and secure. As always with these, it is very important to remove any dirt from painted surfaces where there is contact with the rack.
Secure, sturdy bike rack
Bought this for a cross-country trip. I was so happy to not have to load bikes into the back of the car anymore. Its sturdy, easy to use, but a little heavy for some people to be able to put on and take off alone. I can lift it but my mom can't do it by herself, its too heavy.
Good bike rack BUT won't work with some bikes.
Very well made bike rack but won't work with some bike styles. This rack worked great for my road bike but was unusable for my full suspension mountain bike. There was simply no way to secure the rack to my bike around its rear shock. I also tried it with my 29'er hard tail but the fit on the top tube didn't work very well either. I'm really sorry it didn't work for me - I liked the way the rack fit my car and the way it locked.
Bike Rack Review
Well made, not difficult to install and simple to mount bike on rack. If using this rack on a station wagon or SUV, check to see if you can use rear windshield wiper while the rack is attached to the vehicle.
