Specialized but handy piece of gear

This purchase was specifically to enable me to start developing rock climbing routes which involves going up and down ropes repeatedly. The Petzl Ascender makes that incredibly easy with its ergonomic design and easy to use functionality. Extension with a 10 mm sling off the bottom of the Ascender creates a foot leash which allows you to step up the rope as opposed to pulling yourself up it. I would caution the first time buyer to make sure you buy the correct orientation. If ascending with a Petzl GriGri, I would suggest getting the left hand Ascender as the right hand will be occupied with the rope and GriGri.

Use for caving

I use this for caving SRT. I don't have a strong preference between right and left, both are fine for me. After 3 years of heavy use, it is starting to thin/sharpen where the rope enters the device. I'm happy with this ascender. For my next purchase, I may switch to a Basic without the handle, but the handle is definitely nice for beginners.

Petzl Ascension

Love these ascenders. Not too heavy great grip and solid bite on a variety of rope diameters. Easy to open even with thin gloves on for transitions around fixed points on the rope

Light and large enough for my hand and glove

Used for my first fixed-rope climb (Lobuche, Nepal). This worked very well even though I have a larger hand and was wearing a thick glove. The climb had several types of rope segments and none caused any issues. I did have a problem with one type of carabiner (Black Diamond Hotwire) when used as a rope lock. The carabiner would get in a position where it would not easily slide through the hole on the ascender due to the profile of the carabiner. A round carabiner wouldn't have a problem.
