Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent shoes for trail running I bought these shoes for long hikes and trail running. They feel great right out of the box and I was able to run without size discomfort. However, they are waterproof and your feet get hot in Southern CA. I took them back and purchased the non-waterproof version which allows breathability. I wear a 9.5 and I was told these run big, so I bought the 9 and I my toes are a perfect distance from the front. My only gripe is the cushioning in the toe box. I weigh 200 lbs., so I run on my toes to prevent knee problems and damaging heel strikes. The toe box cushioning is limited, so I wear thick running socks and I'm fine. Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Internal Delamination After a Few Days of Wear I had been using these for walking a couple of miles a day on pavement for about a week, and suddenly the right shoe began to make a popping sound on every step, kind of like the sound of a flip-flop. I took out the insole to verify it wasn't that making noise. Something apparently delaminated in the sole of the shoe. I returned them, and of course REI took them back with no issues. I don't like the gimmicky lacing system, but I have limited choices because of fit issues. If the laces fail on the trail you are in trouble. Other than that I liked the shoes, but decided to go with a Salomon non-Goretex shoe for my next try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are GREAT trekkers! This product demonstrated its value to me over the last couple of months. The ease of getting them on AND removing them is a huge advantage. The innovative use of a high tension wire with a tab to hold it in place is light-years beyond laces. The footwear is light and flexible in construction, as well as highly durable. The support they give makes walking in them a pleasant form of exercise. You want to walk farther than you might need to, because it feels so good to wear them. The look and design are sleek and eye-catching. I have noticed hipsters on the subway admiring them! VERY happy with this purchase and at around $100 a bargain for what you get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, comfortable and built like a tank. I can not state enough how impressed I am by these shoes. They have surpassed all my expectations. I am a disc golfer and I'm very hard on shoes. These Salomon's have taken a beating and keep on ticking. They have a nice wide heel cup for my big heels and are super supportive. My only small gripe is that the laces can rub against the tongue and make noise, but when you are walking with nature that sound goes away real quick. Bravo Salomon, BRAVO!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great All Round Shoe The Salomon X Ultra Low II GTX is not just a hiking shoe. I originally bought the shoes for waterproofing and hiking but the shoe is much more. The shoes are comfortable on and off the trail. The aggressive soles are great for rocking and decomposed trails. The upper mesh is holding up well after 6 months and shows little wear. The laces do tend to relax slightly with aggressive use but for me it's not significant. The size for me runs true, I typically wear between a 9 1/2 and 10 and bought the 10's which fit well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What's the deal with laces? My wife and I both have these shoes. They are sturdy, comfortable and as supportive as a shoe can be. Contrary to the negative reviews out there we both think the lacing is tighter and less prone to loosening than old-fashions lacing systems. E.g., we spent 6 hours hiking in Hawaii on a volcano in cold, very wet, very sandy conditions. The shoes were great. No water, not a speck of sand, no loosening thru the whole hike. I can only guess about why our experience differs so much from the negative reviewers. My guess (note guess) is that the shoes may feel not as tight right around the ankles. The reason for this is that when you use ordinary laces the top is almost always much tighter than the rest of the shoe. The system Salomon uses makes them tight the whole length of the laces. This feels different but it causes the shoe to almost disappear as you walk. This is a good thing IMHO. Maybe some of the people who think it's loosening interpret this inability to feel any constriction as loosening--dunno. As to the reviewer who said it was impossible to tuck the lace without loosening the shoe, I have no idea what they were doing. It's super easy. In short, the best of this type of shoe I've ever had in 40+ years of hiking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable comfort Out of the box these shoes felt like they were broken in. They felt a bit narrow at first as I have wide feet, but after a day of wearing them, they were nothing but comfort. The orthotic insoles provide maximum comfort and make you feel like you're walking on air. I have not taken them hiking yet but will do so in 2 weeks in the Smokies. I'm hoping they feel just as good on the trail as they do for everyday activities. The price is a bit high, but you get what you pay for and these feel like they will be well worth it. As far as size goes, I purchased my normal shoe size and they fit true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable, tough, lightweight and waterproof! These are my 1st hiking shoes. I bought these 2 days before the hike up Half Dome in Yosemite. I wear 9.5, but REI only had 10 in stock. Just like one of the reviewers here said, they were comfy right out of the box. Buying half a size paid off during my 1st time hike up Half Dome. These shoes had tons of grip and they kept my feet dry while going up Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls I was also impressed by the way you can kinda feel the terrain. It went from paved, gravel, rocky, wet rocks, sand and granite. After a 14 hour hike, I had a minor blister on the side of one of my big toe. This was not a big deal to me for the shoes weren't broken in properly, especially after a 14 hour hike. The shoes were even more comfortable the next morning after a 2 mile hike to mirror lake. I even love the quick laces. The laces made getting in and out of the shoes during brakes from the hike. I love these shoes and they were worth every penny.

Are these shoes good for everyday walking on concrete and asphalt?

Asked by: Bill375
They have a somewhat firmer sole than a walking shoe. Comfortable enough to use for everyday casual wear.

Salomon used to only have trail runners and now they have hiking shoes and trail runners. Is there really a big difference? Maybe a little more cushion for trail runners? Can I run in these?

Asked by: Mary
In general, hiking shoes are meant for people who will be carrying more weight (in a pack, for instance) than trail runners. For this reason, hiking shoes tend to have more cushioning. Because the foot strikes differently when running vs. walking, trail runners tend to have less stiff soles that allow the sole to flex more on impact. The downside is that on rocky trails or after a longer hike, you are more likely to have fatigued feet in trail runners as compared to light hikers. I have also noticed that some light hiking shoes appear to have some lateral ankle support, while trail runners rarely have any.

I've owned a pair of these for a year and half and have used them a lot (several multi-day backpacking trips, plus many hikes). I'd like to replace the insoles, which are starting to show wear. Can I purchase a replacement from Salomon?

Asked by: jimmyr78
I use Superfeet insoles, and have since I put them in when I bought the shoes. Great comfort and durability for hikes and just daily use. I'm on my 3rd pair of these shoes over the years. Love 'em

I bought a pair back in Nov. 201 and have loved them. Need a new pair but the ones I own are 12.5 and your size chart only has 12 or 13. is this just an REI choice or Salomon changed? And what size would you recommend I try?

Asked by: KevinF
Salomon no longer makes these hiking shoes in a 12.5. We recommend ordering a US 13.

For "Average footwear weight (pair)" these hiking shoes say 1 lb 5 oz. When compared to the Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX Trail-Running Shoes, they have a weight of 1 lb 9.2 oz. It seems counter intuitive for the hiking shoe to be lighter than the running shoe?

Asked by: Anonymous
These shoes weigh approximately 1lb. 13.5oz. for the pair. Thank you for calling this to our attention, we will have our website updated shortly.
