Light and comfortable; MIPS peace of mind
Previously had a Bell helmet, but was over 5 years old--and helmets are only good for 5 years (outgassing, hardening, brittleing of the foam--they don't last forever kids!). My second-to-previous helmet was a nice $45 Specialized that saved my noggin from a *very* hard skull-to-pavement impact, and was promptly replaced by a REI Bell helmet, 5 years ago. Time for new. Enter dividend and discount coupon and the Giro Savant MIPS. Rode it for the first time today and found it significantly lighter and cooler than my (entirely satisfactory) Bell helmet. I won't talk about MIPS here, I leave that to the reader. But this is a fine lid at a reasonable price.
saved me from serious injury
Took a pretty hard fall when I did not correctly cross a railroad track and my front wheel caught and threw me to the ground. I was aware of my head hitting the ground -- a cement curb, I think -- but didn't think much of it. I crashed, after all. The driver of a car behind me stopped and pointed out the big dent and abrasion on my helmet. I took off the helmet to check it out and was surprised by how hard my head must have hit to cause the damage to the helmet, but not cracked. The driver said, "Wow, that helmet really saved you from a much more serious injury." We were both impressed. . . and I very grateful. I don't even have a headache. Needless to say, I'm buying this one again. Also, it fits great!
Comfortable, cool helmet
Bought this helmet based on the recommendation of an REI employee. I was looking for something to keep my head cool- I commute to work on my bike in DC and arriving with a sweaty head was getting old. This works great, much more airflow than my old one. The only bad thing is that the MIPS catch on my hair, but this can be fixed with a bit of tape. Recently crashed my bike and hit the road pretty hard. The helmet cracked in several places but I walked away without so much as a headache. Repurchasing right now.
Nice Upgrade from My Old Helmet
I bought this bike helmet to replace my old helmet that had reached the end of its useful life. The Savant model had the new MIPS suspension system to protect heads from hard impacts and the subsequent shock to the brain. I also like the adjustment straps that allowed me to get just the right fit on my head. The sales people were especially helpful in demonstrating how to make the adjustments so I could modify them as the weather changes I need to fit a skull cap inside the helmet. I also was able to fit my current rain shell on to the helmet which was a big plus as I ride a lot during the rainy weather.
Light-weight helmet
I like this helmet. It is light-weight (278g) and comfortable. I like the feature of a tightening band. One thing to note: the MIPS feature is a plastic inner shell within the helmet. If I don't wear a scarf or a cap, then the MIPS pulls my hair.
Bike Helmet and why REI is awesome!
The Giro helmet, it's good, especially since I saved money on this one and paid about half of what I normally do for a helmet and still got a good one. REI though, that's who I'm happy with on this purchase... ordered this helmet originally on-line, the second time I put it on to ride, the rear closing dial pops off and I can't get it back on. Took it in to my local REI Raleigh store, switched it out and was on my way. I love this about REI! Will always be a customer because of customer service and satisfaction guarantees like this!
Exceptional comfort. Slim Profile.
I've got a bucketful of thick, curly hair and finding a comfortable helmet has always been a struggle. The savant is exceptionally easy to adjust — even on the fly — accommodates a braid, low tail, or hair down without any discomfort. Great in summer temps, the vents are more than adequate. Side note: I have not had the hair-snag issue brought up in the other reviews.
Good helmet but MIPS catches on hair
This is my first MIPS helmet. Love the fit and the tightening mechanism, but MIPS does not work with my long hair. The exposed plastic/rubber tabs holding the MIPS liner in place often catch and pull out my hair when taking off the helmet. This should not be a problem for shorter hair and could probably be fixed by taping over the tabs. I'm going to wait until the technology is improved and exchange for the non-MIPS version
Great Helmet
Great helmet, lightweight with good airflow. Like the peace of mind of having MIPS. The helmet tightening system is also great for a snug fit.
Great helmet, BUT it rips my hair out!
This is a light-weight and great fitting helmet. However, every time I take it off, I lose a giant gob of my hair because it gets caught in the mips plastic tabs. I'm planning to return it in exchange for the non-MIPS version. I might recommend this helmet, but only to a man.
