I'm a big fan of neo air sleeping pad. This is my first experience with the higher R-value pad. I bought this to go with my Big Agnes down bag which has no insulation on the bottom of it. The only source of warmth for my backside was this pad. This pad held up beautifully after numerous nice in the high Sierra. My hips and shoulders never touched the ground and it was so warm, I had to unzip my bag on most nights. Are used the inflator bag to inflate the pad and I found it to be very easy but still had to use breath to top it off. I could not be happier with the sleeping pad and I expect it will keep me warm and even colder conditions.
I just got this sleep pad a few weeks ago, and got my chance to try it out over the weekend. Very impressed with it. It didn't lose air during the night, and helped keep me warm as the temperatures were down to 29 degrees at night. It is a little noisy but once you get settled in and still it's not that big of a deal. Would be much better if we could get a 25 inch width with a regular length. It would be awesome to have the weight savings in a more convenient size. Not really complaining about the noise but if it were quieter and had the regular length with the long width it would be the perfect sleeping pad.
Overall, very happy. Originally purchased for 2014 John Muir Trail hike. Have used many many nights since then. So far coldest @ -9F. and slept toasty. It is "crinkly" but you get used to it and the noise stops when you stop moving. 2.5" of plush, R 5.7 @ only 15oz is an amazing feat! Durable... have slept on nearly every surface... no leaks. Packs well, a little bit of a "huff" to fill at altitude. My only complaint (and this applies to ALL 20" width Reg pads), as a "back sleeper" your elbows have nowhere to go and fall 2.5" to the cold ground .. (unless you're very skinny, I'm 5' 10"/165lbs).. once the elbows fall.. boom I wake up. it's like trying to sleep on a narrow airport bench! ThermaRest, somebody PLEASE make a 25" pad in Regular (72") length or add 2.5" of elbow extension area to each side!! Backsleepers everywhere will rejoice (and buy your products)!
Bought this along with the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite Sleeping Pad for my February 1st Start on The AT. They were both on sale and along with my $100 REI Card it was a great deal. Have slept on both for a couple of nights and have left them both fully inflated for about a week, they have both been great. Both are the 25" width, I'm a cruiser, lol. I can sleep on my back, stomach and my side and I get great support. I also purchased the Small Neoair Battery Pump. 5 mins and either is inflated to exactly the right amount of air support. I have read a couple reviews that said they were both noisy (crinkley), didn't find either of them to be loud at all. Strongly recommended these to everyone who has asked me about them, and a few who haven't, lol. Both came with the patch kit, The NeoAir Xlite also came with the small pump bag.
These were plenty warm for the frosty overnights (~20°). Two complaints. First they slide around really easily so I'm glad we went with the rectangle version or we'd been on the ground half the night. The other complaint was one of them lost air the first night. Not totally flat, but significantly down. I haven't tested it yet to see if it is a seam issue or if I poked a hole in it. I'm pretty careful with my gear, I clean up my site, was in a tent with a footprint, I'm either unlucky or there's a flaw with the one.
I got the Max (rectangular)/Regular size pad. This pad is insanely good. It's light, packs small, comfortable, and warm. I side/back sleep as a large man (6'5" / 240 lbs) and the pad is comfortable. While back sleeping without a sleeping bag, the pad is slightly too narrow, but only do that in summer / early fall / late spring where it doesn't matter if I have a hand touching the ground (and sometimes do intentionally to lose heat). Side sleeping keeps me off the ground in all seasons when I have it fully inflated. I haven't had any problems with sliding off the pad or having the pad slide. And while the pad is slightly more noisy than a self-inflating pad I've used it's not loud enough to wake me nor my camping partners. The only possible complaint is that the pad is too warm during hot summer nights (85F or so when I'm going to sleep) which leads me to moving a lot during sleeping to release the warmth. But I wouldn't change that because then it wouldn't keep me so toasty warm when I'm going to sleep sub freezing. I'm eventually going to pick up a different pad for summer sleeping when I need a pad to comfort me from hard ground. Overall, this is simply the best pad I've ever used for fall, winter, or spring camping. You will also have no problems summer camping north of the Mason Dixon. I cannot recommend this sleeping pad enough.
Worth every penny. The size of a nalgine, light and absolutely perfect for sleeping on the snow. Completely protected against the cold of the snow!
Got this Therm-a-Rest XTherm due to its great reviews and top placements in magazine reviews. I guess these folks never slept on it! Went camping at high altitude (>10,000) and low temperatures (<32 F). It was like sleeping on ball bearings. Any slight movement and I would slide off it or it would slide out from under me. This does not occur in the same conditions or with the same sleeping bag (Marmot Pinnacle) with my ExPed pad. Done with Therm-a-Rest and can't trust ratings in online articles. Will get a new ExPed.
I have to agree with Zerberus that this pad is too slick. If you put your feet up, they will slide. I found myself constantly sliding down the pad or off the side. I also have the NeoAir Xtherm and do not have this problem on this mat. Also, the valve sticks up rather off to the side and can be annoying.
This is my second NeoAir XTherm, I returned the first one after it leaked. This second one leaks too! I'm not sure what brand to try next but I'm hoping to return this next leaky sleeping pad. What a pain!
