hard to eat
Smells bad. I tried to eat it inside the camp then all my friends jumped outside the camp. SPEW
The look and texture is awful
We eat a lot of freeze dried food when we go camping, and yes...it's not the best or the most tasty, but in general it's pretty acceptable. However, the look and the texture of this one is very off putting. It literally looks like someone threw up in the bag. We had to turn off our head lamps to be able to eat it because it was so gross to look at. The taste is ok but certainly not something I would consider buying again.
Weird texture, good flavor
I generally liked the flavor of this, but the texture was a little too soup-y with the recommended amount of water. I couldn't finish it because the southwestern flavors became a little too overwhelming, but it was tasty. I'd share it and eat something else in addition in the future.
Gross bits of gross
Well, this packet of food is just too mealy. A lot of the little bits did not rehydrate and stayed crunchy. It does not have that "hearty" feeling you are looking for out in the woods. Choose other flavors if possible.
Off putting flavor and texture: could not eat
It was really good that I had a spare meal in my pack, because I had to throw this one away even after a very long day of biking to a remote campsite. The problem was the mealy texture and weird flavor.
Grainy
This had a very weird texture to it. I added the recommended amount of water to it and it was very grainy. Granted that is what masa is but I feel like it should have been a more fine grain. I added another couple of ounces of water to it and it was better. The flavor was pretty good and it was very filling. I wasn't hungry after 5 hours without eating anything else, which can be the case with some of these foods.
My new favorite
In my opinion, this is really tasty. It says to add 2 cups of water. I add just a little less to make it more solid, then let stand 5 minutes longer than recommended, stirring once half way through. On a 5 day backpacking trip, I'll happily eat two of these...
Seems like the water didn't absorb fully?
This meal was FINE but I would definitely recommend other backpacking meals over it. The flavors were good but it seemed soupy and then the cornmeal and veggies were too crunchy and the beef was pretty tough. I won't be buying it again.
Darn tasty
This meal was actually very tasty, better than most dehydrated meals. I liked how the package was very flat for ease of packing into the bear canister. I also liked the high protein content. Guess, you get what you pay for.
Great taste. Easy to make from a open fire.
Great taste. Tasted like a regular meal and not one from a pouch. Easy to make, used water boiled from a fire pit. Camped in Joshua Tree. I'll definitely buy this again for my next trip.
