This jetboil can make anything I swear! From backcountry pizzas, breakfast sandwiches with fried egg, avocado toast to supreme ramen, pasta salads, and even poke bowls…very impressed with the highly tunable flame control. Absolutely recommend for anyone who likes cooking..in the front county to the deep wilderness. Using this jetboil adds a fun creative element to the end of my long days in the backcountry.
After using and enjoying the Jetboil Zip for quite some time, I decided to try out the MiniMo. Looking for something that could be used for more than just boiling water, I was hopeful that this system could get the job done. This most likely would have been the case as well, if I actually received a unit in working order.... The first unit I received had a functional burner, but the metal ring that holds the plastic shroud in place was extremely loose and felt like it might separate. This was not the case on the replacement so I know that this was indeed a manufacturer defect. The problem with the first unit was that because the metal ring was so loose, it had bent out of alignment. This means that the MiniMo cup fit crooked on the burner and was completely unleveled. Comparing this to my Jetboil Zip which sits completely level. I ended up taking this one back to my local REI for a replacement of the same kind. The replacement unit I received at first glance seemed to be perfect. Everything felt solid, and fit together snug. The cup fit level on the burner and wasn't crooked. But then I tried actually using it. On startup the gas would come out in spurts until you turned the pressure up. And at low enough pressure the entire flame would actually be YELLOW. It also was heavily biased to one side and often holes on one side would not even have gas coming out of them. The yellow flame left a giant black soot mark on the bottom of the cup as well. The regulator on this unit was defective right out of the box. I never got a third replacement for the Jetboil MiniMo, just ended up returning it. I will be looking into other brands now, definitely not Jetboil. How can something that cost so much, be such poor quality?
I bought this for an Alaskan backcountry trip, weight was critical. Conditions and altitude varied from one extreme to the other. It worked flawlessly.
Went to REI just to get the normal JetBoil. So glad i went with the Minimo. So easy to eat out of with it being wider/shallower. Easily worth the extra 30 bucks. Packs down super easy. Super light. Love the simmer control. Not a single complaint. The java kit works pretty well too if you use it right. I use it to brew tea though, not coffee.
While I wish I had gone with the Sumo for pot capacity reasons I have no complaints about this stove. I even take it along when we car camp and are using a larger stove for most cooking as it is so convenient for boiling water for coffee, tea, etc. and it is absolutely fantastic when I travel by motorcycle. I did have a little issue with the igniter at first but for mine it has been reliable. I think part of it in my case was being careful with it - be sure to push the plunger straight inward, not at an angle, and only just hard enough. Still, it's always wise to have a second source for ignition - that's just good camping advice anyhow.
I've been using a variety of hiking stoves over my life, from a Svea 123 through an MSR Whisperlite. I was skeptical, but this JetBoil sounded like what I was looking for based upon multiple reviews and lots of user feedback. I have only used it in backyard test for familiarization, so far, but it boils water faster than advertised. I'm planning on using this as minimalist water-boiling only kit for a couple on extended trip. I like it a lot. The REI associate told me to expect 5 or 6 days of cooking on one small file canister; I can see that being the case. The entire stove, including French press attachment, and one small fuel canister, weighs 1.5 pounds (US).
OK, just a newbie but...ignitor filiment didn't work but I bent it a little down and to the center now it does every time. Also no place to store pan holder. I nested it in a Toaks pot. See my solution using Toaks 750 ml titanium pot and Snow Peak 450 ml titanium cup. Thanks!
I’ve had my JetBoil for 2&1/2yrs now, and love it! Easy, so easy to use. Boils water fast if the fuel is turned up all the way. Be careful not to have heat turned up too high when making rice, or mac n’ cheese, it’ll stick and/or burn. Obviously, I’ve learned that not the easy way. I learned a new thing this last camping trip. When getting the water hot enough to say wash hands, or do dishes that need hot water- get it hot, it will probably be too hot to use, pour it into a Yeti 30oz and pour the hot water you need from there. Both fit the same amount of water.
I used this stove on a three week through hike on JMT last September. Bought it to replace an MSR stove that runs on gas, and it was really nice not to have to mess with liquid fuel. It packs down nicely and heated water quickly. I used the MiniMo Pot support to cook fish and it worked well for that. The ignition system failed early on in the trip, and we needed to use a lighter to start the stove. That wasn't a huge deal, but seems like it might be a design flaw that they should work on since numerous other reviewers have had problems with it too. Low profile pot is a nice feature. I would have given it 5 stars if the igniter would have worked correctly.
First the good: The cooking system is awesome and the capacity is amazing. This unit ignites and cooks about as well as you could ask for from a stove. Now the not-so good. The top will barely fit on when you next your burner and can of fuel it it and will inevitably pop off in your pack. Worse, the bowl that also covers the bottom of the burner when your stove isn’t in use, is made of brittle plastic that is legendary for breaking. In fact, before you buy this unit, you should read about all these folks who have repeatedly replaced the bowl because it is brittle and designed poorly. https://jetboil.johnsonoutdoors.com/us/shop/parts-accessories/bottom-covers/bottom-cover-minimo-sumo
