Perfect for my 8 year old!

I bought this for my 8 year old daughter's 1st backpacking trip and it was perfect, and will be for years to come since it can adjust as she grows. It's a top loading pack which worked well for her since she was only carrying her stuff for the one night that we went out--her sleeping bag and sleeping pad, her food, clothes, tent poles, crocs, and our water filter. There are plenty pocket spaces and compartments for other storage as well. She kept her headlamp and our 1st Aid Kit in the brain of her bag, chapstick in the zip pockets on the hip straps, a water bottle in each of the side mesh pockets (there is a dedicated space for a bladder, which I will get her next time because she kept drinking from mine...I don't mind sharing...just sayin'), and her rain gear in the front mesh pocket. There was even another pocket behind the front mesh pocket that we didn't discover until unpacking her pack after the trip. My daughter is a whiner, I must confess, and I was worried about her complaining the entire time about the pack being to heavy and if we can stop for the millionth time, but, to my surprise, she was comfortable through the entire trip and loved her pack! It is super sturdy and easy for a child to adjust their own straps, and it even has a whistle attached to the sternum strap, which was convenient and perfect for kids to not have one more thing to manage...it's right there if she needed it! We can't wait to go out on our next adventure!

Great pack at a great price.

This pack seems very versatile and fully adjustable for comfort. My 8 year old son hauled this pack with 14 pounds loaded for a 9 miles backpacking trip through the the Cabinet Mountains in Montana. He did very well, had a few pressure points that we were able to work out with a quick adjustment. Pack appears well built and has some nice features, so far very pleased. My only reason for a 4 star rating is that it would be nice see a built in raincover.

Great 1st Pack

Purchased for our Grandson. 10 yrs, 4'6",66 lbs. Still lots of room to adjust for growth. His longest hike with it so far was a 2 niter. Carried his own bladder, compressed sleeping bag, clothes, food, water filter, etc. on inside. Extra shoes, sleeping pad, paracord, etc. on outside. Still had room plus extra room in cap but wanted to keep weight under 20 lbs. Pack fits him great and made it easy for him to carry the weight.

Great pack for small kids!

My two boys ages 4 & 7 are into camping so I thought I would get them a pack that would fit their sleeping bag, pad, water, and stuffed animal. Turns out there are really only a few on the market. So I initailly bought one of each. The first one I returned was the Ospey Zip 25 which had a waist belt and chest strap but was more like a big school backpack...not fitting a sleeping bag in that. The next two to go back were the Deuter Fox 30 and Fox 40. They were cool bags but they were built with few features. Only two side pockets and one zipper pocket on the top...other that than they were top load only (with a sleeping bag zipper at the bottom for access to the center that would be hard to pull a sleeping bag through). I had already decided that I was keeping the REI Passage 38 for my 7 year old but I was trying to see if I could find a smaller torso bag for my 4 year old. In the end the REI (which says Adjustable from 12"-16" torso size) was actually smaller than the Fox30/40 (which said adjustable from 11"-17"). So I bought two of them. Almost the same features as my Osprey Atmos 50. Waist pockets, stretch front pocket, water bladder pocket, side pockets, detachable day pack with zippered pockets on top and bottom. Gear slings on the bottom for a sleeping pad...this thing has everything.

Great kids real hiking backpack.

I bought this for my son who is 7 and is small for his age. He only weighs about 65 lbs and this backpack fits him great. We bought this for overnight scout camping trips and hiking. I chose this backpack for him because it was at least a pound lighter than the name brand competitor that was 10$ more. At his age and weight a pound is huge. So far it is durable and easy to use and very adjustable as he grows. This is a much better investment for the next five years than cheaper daypacks. I gladly recommend this backpack for any youth.

Sturdy & Comfortable

We bought two of these for our kids ages (8, 11) for a European vacation. So it was used for luggage rather than hiking. The were roomy enough for all their clothes and a few comfort items-- but not so big that they were too heavy for them to pick up and carry. They appreciated the side pockets for the water bottles and the mesh pocket on the back was good for books. The little zipper pouches on the hip belt held chapstick and treasures they found. I just watched the video to learn about how to attach a backpack (it turns out that you have to put it in the pack). There isn't enough room for a week of clothes for overnight camp and the sleeping bag; but I guess that is to be expected. One thing I might say is that it is important to get them fitted. The review of the pack says the suggested age range is 6-11. Our 11 year is 5' 1" has the back adjusted to the same torso height as our 8 old who is 4' 6". Both are at the 13" and so they will have more time with this pack. I was expecting to buy the 11 yo a Youth pack; but they were all too big.

Great for our 7 year old

The pack fit our skinny 7 year old almost entirely cinched. It was light weight and he was able to carry his clothes, sleeping bag and pad and water. (That reached his weight limit.) We went on a 3 day backpacking trip this summer in Wyoming. The pack was great for him especially the hip belt pockets. (He loved them!)

Great backpack especially for skinny kids

My son is very skinny. Other kids backpacks could not be tightened enough to stay on his hips. This one was the only one that could be tightened enough. And he already had a chance to use it and it was comfy. Lots of pockets for all kind of stuff to carry.
