Rated 5 out of 5 by from On a roll! I really like this product! Although it's not the biggest, it definitely works well and is very adaptable to various traveling conditions. It feels solid and rolls very well. The bigger wheels do better over cobblestones in various European cities and towns. My wife and I shared this on a recent trip to Europe and we maxed it out with clothes, shoes, and a few bottles of wine and Scotch. Our weight came in just under 50 lbs. I'm a firm believer in packing light and this suits me just fine. If it won't fit, I don't need it kinda attitude and it keeps me from over-packing. I especially like the detachable day pack, a real convenient feature.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Brilliant idea but a size issue I wanted to love this bag as, in theory, it seemed to fit my needs down to the ground. I travel internationally and domestically a good bit and have lugged a 70-90 liter backpack all around the world, but am now at a point(age) when the option for wheels looks very attractive. Best of both worlds, right? I completely trust REI bags having had one for over a decade, so I was thrilled that this looked to fit the bill. I was a little worried that the 71 liter size might not be enough but thought I'd give it a shot or learn to take a bit less stuff. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: Excellent build quality Lightweight considering the components (wheels and frame plus harness) REALLY nice daypack that slides in rather than zips (great for quick switch) and has great features interiorly and exteriorly Good harness that pack away fairly easily Cons: NO way this is a 70 liter bag. Just can't believe it. The daypack is pretty big, maybe 18, maybe 20 liters, so that's great but the main bag is just too small. The handle housing sticks into the main compartment and takes loads of space. Lockable zippers would also be a nice addition on all zippers, particularly the daypack. Botton line: For my needs, it is just too small, barely bigger inside than my 45 liter carry on. If only REI made a 28'' (nominally 80 liter) or 30''(nominally 90 liter) version, that would be perfect. Sadly, I have to return this one. If your needs are smaller, it would be a good choice but at a usable 55/60 liters (absolute max), you might just as well take a little less and have the 50 liter/22'' version and carry it on the plane.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mostly well designed travel bag Overall a nice bag with strong design points, low weight, nice travel options but somewhat limited packing options as there are few pockets or internal structures. Potential design issue: The 'Laptop' sleeve only fits 13" devices so those who travel with working class devices are mostly eliminated. Significant design issue: The added a mostly useless 'kickstand' which adds mass and effectively limits the smallest packing size / shoving space the bag will fit into. Shame as its amazing how often something you will only use, what? -- 2-3% of the time?, will be in the way or snagging on something when you don't want it to. If you're looking at this bag for adventure travel -- and lets face it, that's the original point of this class of backpack, isn't it? -- I suggest moving on. The last couple generations of 'combo' bags started from a backpack and added luggage components. The current generation starts as luggage and adds backpack components. That's just wrong. And that kickstand bites me way too often. If you're looking at this bag for knocking around domestic airports and Hyatts with just an occasional need to throw it on your back, ok. But I'd recommend just sticking with luggage -- you won't use the backpack straps near as often as you think.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best bag ever I am a heavy world traveler and just used this bag to visit 10 countries in Europe in the past 8 months. I have owned convertible bags ever since its inception in the mid-1990s, and this is my 4th one. I have also tried and returned several others and believe this is the best convertible bag I have ever put my hands on. The best and the most noticeable feature about this bag is its lightweight, which makes this bag only one of the few truly convertible bags available today, as other heavier convertible bags are impossible to use for, yes, hiking / camping! On top of this I am impressed with how much thoughts have gone into minor details in building this bag. You can put the day pack on top of the main bag when you wheel them, as there is a hole on top of the shoulder strap of the day pack that are designed to go through the handle of the main bag. The main compartment DOES have a lockable zipper, and even for the two zippers on the day pack, if you get any small locks sold today, they snug into the holes of the zipper heads, and you can lock them without any problem. The day pack is large enough for a 13-inch laptop, which is my favorite size, and small enough to carry on your chest when you go hiking / camping. I am very picky and hard to be pleased when it comes to my travel equipment, but I can't think of any complaints on this bag. I hope REI will keep his line of bags for years to come and even improve on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Bag. Purchased for convenience of travel by air or vehicle. 26" Bag is perfect and very manageable for 5'2" 100lb person. Will never travel again without a wheeled bag! Plenty of space for hiking clothes, shoes and accessories - especially important in cold weather for lots of layering needs. Also has compartment to store empty day pack (comes with bag) to use on day hikes - so do not have to carry separately during travel. Very satisfied!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it I have been traveling around the world with this luggage. It is amazing. I got the 26inch. My only complaint is that it is on the heavier side, but nothing I can't handle, even fully loaded. I ended up leaving my day pack at home because I needed a bigger backpack for flights. i have used it as rolling luggage more than as a backpack. The straps came in handy when I was island hopping in Thailand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Green Color is OK- - - Not an "Electric" Green I purchased this as a gift for my son. He prefers earth-tone colors that do not stand out in a crowd. Thus, I was concerned that the green was an "electric" green that would be too bright for him. I think it is closer to a military fatigue green. Given the huge discount for the green color, I am glad I took the chance on the green.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ProductGreat Price A great product that I found marked down on REI.com. Only Green color choice but who cares for such a lightweight and sturdy pack. Will use it on planes for (extended) weekenders. Also comes with a day pack that snaps in/out. Love the look, the material, the brand and the bargain.

I already have a 55L pacsafe bag but am looking for something around 70L.  Does this 71L space include the day bag? If so how big is the main bag?

Asked by: Nicole
The 71 liter gear capacity includes the removable daypack. The main compartment has gear capacity of approximately 52 liters (3173 cubic inches).

I need something that unzips like a suitcase. Top loading is the main reason why I don't use backpacks.  Where can I find the pictures and video of the inside and open product ?

Asked by: Rodrigo
Unfortunately, we are unable to upload additional images or videos of the pack. However, this luggage does have a large u-shaped zipper similar to other luggage, not a small zipper like most backpacks.

Is it waterproof?

Asked by: Kamaile
While the fabric will shed water, the seams and zippers are not sealed. This means that if left sitting in a downpour, the contents of the Stratocruiser might get wet.

If you detach the harness and hipbelt, does the daypack still attach?

Asked by: Laura850
The daypack sits in the outermost pocket on the back of the pack. Removing the harness and hipbelt has no effect on the daypack.

Hello. I purchased this item in green version used from one of your garage sales. It is missing the daypack. Is there a way to order a replacement or can you recommend something similar to replace it? Thanks!

Asked by: Brittany
We do not have the exact replacement, however any pack that is up to 20 liters will be able to stow in the luggage. A great daypack that is 18 liters is the REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack, which is a great solution: https://www.rei.com/product/892074/rei-co-op-flash-18-pack
