Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Bit Large for Female Frames I purchased this pack as a double duty daypack and a college bag that could protect my laptop while commuting to and from classes. It's roomy, and well made, but the straps are a touch too wide on my frame (which is pretty stocky compared to most women) which cause them to ride up on my neck, even with a heavier load. The zippers too are a bit finicky due to the flap of fabric to protect them from rain - I'm always concerned they are going to snag. Ultimately, my husband loved using this bag as he's used to low quality bargain store backpacks so it still has a love in our family, and I found something that fit my needs better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack, High Quality I was looking to replace the low end backpack I had and also find something that I could use in place of a 25 yer old Targus Ballistic Nylon Briefcase. I was not looking for something for a laptop or tablet. Just a well made, versatile backpack with a lot of space, adjustable straps, and comfortable to use on a daily basis both for personal and work. The Full Lode not only met the requirements it exceeded them. Better price than North Face, Columbia or Osprey options. Holds a lot. Easy to access the different sections, shoulder straps VERY comfortable. Worth more than the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good carry-on "personal item" Bought this to use as my second (personal item) carry-on for domestic and international plane travel, to replace an old friend used for 15 years. It has worked well so far. Fits under seat nicely, but is also quite roomy and light weight. Good array of organizing pockets. The jacket stuff pocket on the outside will only handle a very light weight jacket or sweater, but other than that have no complaints.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pack Bought this for a school pack that could flex into other uses if need be. The quality is what you would expect from a REI product. Which is to say it's very good. There are two organization pockets aside from the main compartment. While both are functional I wouldn't mind a few more pockets for pens and the like. But there is a pocket that is perfect for the Ti-84 calculator(or a Nintendo 3DS, priorities man, priorities) A sleeve in the main compartment fits my tablet in a hard case like a glove, and the rest of the compartment is plenty spacious with another sleeve for hydration/large laptop. My only complaints with this system so far is that the zippers have a tendency to bind if you don't take the time to line up the approaches, and the exterior pocket won't quite hold a helmet. Other than that, these are great packs at competitive prices that will enjoy a long service life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Walk, bike, study I'm so grateful my old pack's zippers finally permanently split, which forced me to go shopping for a replacement! I wanted a lightweight pack without the heavy padding, stiff waist belt and webstrapmania. Something good for books, laptop, lunch, pencils, first aid kit, raingear, etc. etc., since I'm usually gone all day either by foot, bike or scooter. I looked at 10 packs at the store, but most were either too gadgety (I don't carry an ice axe in town) or too beefy at 2.5 pounds empty. This pack is wonderful - a great organizer, lightweight, and carries a load better than my previous flimpsy bag o' pack. I have grown to love the 3 web straps, because I can attach a hat, a wet jacket, or a blinking light. My only criticism is that the outside stuff pocket could be a little pouchier to carry a thicker jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Talking About Both Form and Function In One Bag... Got to use it for the first time on a 35-day journey to the Philippines as a carry-on and I must say that I have a new favorite.Fits well under the seat and has all the right pockets in all the right places which makes things really easy to find. I just wish that the front stash pocket was bigger or was made of a more elastic material so one could really stuff more into it other than a mere Uniqlo jacket. But even that is not a handicap as it still remains very useful for other purposes. I have it in gray/orange combo which makes it look striking and not to mention, it was constructed with great attention to detail. If the TNF Recon (which I also have) was a celebrity, the REI Full Lode would be it's closest threat to stardom. Having said that the latter for me has more personality and can remain upright on its own (especially when full) my Recon wouldn't. For me the only advantage the Recon has is its sturdier backside (reason why it can't stay upright on its own so it's a trade-off) for longer tugging around but in fairness to REI the Full Lode is appropriately categorized as a "daypack" so I'm not going to knock off a star because of that. Buy one and you'll be glad you did!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great capacity but warm to wear I bought this for a combination computer bag for work and a traveling bag to hike or hold purchases while I travel. The computer sleeve works just fine. There is a separate sleeve for an iPad, which I used for my Kindle. Nice feature! Overall, the bag is nice. But... There are two straps on the top of the bag that can make access a little hard if you have something big in the bag. I mostly leave them unlatched so I am not constantly opening them. The other thing is that the ventilation on the back could be better. It is sufficient for comfort with no pressure points. But it was warm and made me sweat a lot. Overall, a decent bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Travel Companion I wasn't happy with an old day pack that I used for my last overseas adventure trip and decided to give the Full Lode pack an audition for a quick trip to Australia and New Zealand. It worked perfectly for me. I travel with a fairly small netbook that fit into the laptop sleeve with plenty of room to spare for cables and a wireless mouse. The inner mesh sleeve held my noise-cancelling headphones in a convenient spot for retrieving and stowing as I got on and off my flights. In the front compartment, there was a sleeve for my phone and another zippered compartment that held my passport and important travel documents without having them bunched up in the bottom of the bag. The side water bottle pockets were perfect for holding a pair of slides during my flights or water bottles while I was hiking around town or the countryside. The small front pocket was a great place to stow charging cables and the attached lanyard held my car keys for the entire trip. Even with all this gear, there was still plenty of room for cameras and a few spare clothing items. On my way home, I had an 8-hour layover in San Francisco and the Full Lode Daypack held all of my gear while I jumped on trains, cable cars, trolleys and walked around Fisherman's Wharf. It did it all with no damage or wear and carried the weight without causing me discomfort. It might be a bit lightweight to carry a full-sized (heavy) laptop for extended periods but it certainly fit the bill for my travel needs.

Is this appropriate, or can it be adjusted for a Middle-Schooler? Boy is 11, 5' 1'" with very slim build and narrow shoulders. He's used (and loved) the Tarn 18 for the past several years but now needs more room. Thank you!

This pack does work for a wide range of heights and it is fairly adjustable, so it is a good choice for your son.

What type of nylon/polyester is used for this backpack (or, what is the denier measurement of the material)?

Asked by: jblox
The main pack fabric is 420 denier polyurethane (PU) coated nylon with a water repellant face. The bottom of the pack uses a heavier 630 denier PU coated nylon with a DWR finish. There is also some accent fabric around the main zip area that is a 450 denier polyester with PU coating and a water repellant finish. While the pack materials are water repellant, it is not a waterproof pack.

What is the best way to clean/wash this backpack?

Asked by: Shuska
We recommend washing the Full Lode Pack by hand using a detergent that is safe on technical fabric. Nathan Sport Wash is a good choice. https://www.rei.com/product/765651/nathan-sport-wash-laundry-detergent-20-fl-oz
