I've had my Rim Runner 22 for almost a year now, and i've used it on several full day hikes, as well as full mountain biking, climbing and sporting treks. I have found that it is big enough to hold all of my extra gear (i.e. ankle braces, raincoat, first aid kit) as well as my hammock gear, and snacks for the day with plenty of extra space. I have yet to fill it all the way for any of my casual trips, but I know it would hold more things for bigger trips. The side pockets are a perfect size, they hold even my Nalgene water bottle snuggly, which I have had problems with on other packs. Overall I think this pack is the perfect pack for all of my adventures big and small!
I have had this bag for over a year and it is my day to day bag. I use it to go to the gym, work, day hikes, travel, whatever really. The bladder is a great size and I routinely come home with 1-1.5 L of water left. This is not something I would recommend on any hikes longer than 4 hours though. The storage size is perfect for day to day, but it can feel small and too bulky if you pack it to the brim. It's perfect for packing a lunch, rain jacket, map, phone, some snacks. I wouldn't shoot for too much. Love the clips on the bag too. I put sandals, hiking poles, swim suits, locks... you name it. This will be my day pack until it dies.
Without a doubt, this has been (and continues to be) the best backpack I've ever had! I use it primarily as a gym bag, and there's plenty of room to carry all my gear. I also used it as a day pack when travelling to Guatemala this past summer. I had enough room for a fully day's worth of hiking gear, a hammock, camera with multiple lenses and a raincoat. I'm rough on packs, and this one continues to stand up to my abuse. I'll load it with 30-40 pounds of free weights and then climb stairs, but it handles the weight great!
The Camelbak Rim Runner 22 Hydration Pack (RR22) is the BEST!!! Having said that, I offer a little background. This pack was a replacement for my first Camelbak, a Trail Blazer (probably 11-12 years old) and an early predecessor of the RR22. My Trail Blazer was a workhorse, serving as my personal carry-on when flying and going with me every place I hiked and fished whether at home in Illinois or out West. I liked that pack a lot except for the fact that it could be hot (due in part to the black color) and the side mesh pockets were too shallow to be of much use. There are times, such as when flying, you want to forego the reservoir and carry a water bottle or two, and that was quite the challenge in the Trail Blazer’s meager mesh pockets. Now to the RR22. When I bought it online in March 2014 just before a trip to Tucson and Sedona, I could find no reviews nor one in a local store to see first-hand. So it was essentially a blind purchase based on the product description, and I hoped for the best. All the colors were attractive, but I opted for the Sienna Red. I carried it on six hiking trips (some of which were very hot) and was duly impressed. Here’s why: The overall SIZE and CARRYING CAPACITY are perfect for my purposes. No problem toting a full size camera, lunch or snacks for two, an extra shirt and an assortment of hiking accessories (first aid kit, compact flashlight, sunscreen, etc.). Obviously a lot of thought went into the design of the compartments. They open wide and all cargo is easily accessible. The pocket arrangement in the front compartment keeps everything tidy and organized. The zipper for the reservoir compartment has a distinguishable pull so as not to be confused with the zippers for the other two compartments. The 100 fl. oz Antidote RESERVOIR seemed a bit excessive at first, but proved to be a real bonus on a 4-hr. hike in the desert with a thirsty partner. The Quick Link™ feature for separating the drinking tube from the bladder is really slick and very convenient for refilling. The reservoir’s welded center baffle (an interior septum) serves to prevent excess bulging when filled with water, keeping the reservoir relatively flat against the back. Though the quick-snap cap tightens in just a quarter turn, some care is needed in keeping the threads aligned for getting a complete seal and avoiding leakage. Tucked under the lip of the filling port is a pair of folding arms that can be tilted back to hug the edges of the bladder and hold it open to dry. You have to look to find them. This feature is a neat addition and sure beats using an array of clothes pins to accomplish the same thing on the older model bladders. The padded SHOULDER STRAPS, HARNESS, HIPBELT and STERNUM STRAP adjust nicely and all work well together for a very comfortable fit. The breathable BACK PANEL and the AIR CHANNEL that runs along the wearer’s spine do indeed help with ventilating one’s back. On a hot day, it doesn’t eliminate sweating, but certainly helps. The two SIDE MESH POCKETS are the greatest, the perfect answer to the minimalistic pockets in the old Trail Blazer. These pockets are not only ample in size, but also snuggly elastic. Perfect for securing a 16-oz. water bottle. From the online product description, it wasn’t clear how the pack secures trekking poles. Here’s how that works. There are TWO LOOPS at the base of the pack. The tips of a pair of poles neatly fit into each loop. The shafts of the collapsed poles are tucked under the COMPRESSION STRAPS, one on each side of the pack near the top. So no problem carrying a pair of poles for both you and your partner (four in all). The bilateral DAISY-CHAINED LASHING SYSTEM is nicely placed and easy to use with Velcro(R) straps (not included). Big improvement over the corresponding system on some of the other models. My kudos to the designers of the RR22. I cannot think of anything I would do to improve it, and must say it is very well made. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
I've been using this pack for everything: hiking, running, cycling, etc. it has a fair bit of room. I keep my essentials (first aid kit, flashlight, spare batteries, duct tape strips, bug spray, 50' paracord, knife, compass, waterproof matches, etc.) in the front pocket, 3 L bladder in the back pocket, and there's ample room left over in the middle pocket for whatever I decide to bring with me. When I don't require much space, the compression straps do a great job of keeping the pack small and tight. Very comfortable.
Very good. The back pocket meant to house the bladder is a little bit thin so it is hard to find other uses if you want to re-purpose the bag but there is another main pocket that is very large so it isn't a real problem. Other than that I like it. It's very comfortable.
Ok so I didn't really need another backpack - I own about 6 in varying sizes. But I saw this and was intrigued with the back venting on it. It has three different areas that are padded that keep the pack away from your back. I was a little concerned about the straps being too close and chafing my neck but I was going to have layers on plus my bandana. It turned out the straps worked fine. The venting worked great - better than my other packs. While people on my trip had wet shirts I was almost completely dry! The pack itself is lightweight and has two spacious compartments. My only complaint is I exchanged out the hose on the camelback for an insulated one and it does not hook well into the holder on the strap . You have to force it in and it pops out. Other than that I will definitely be hiking with this pack again!
from snowboard trips up in the mountains, to basic day hikes on the coast. this bag has proved it self in every condition!
I bought this bag a few weeks ago for using on day hikes. It's worked out well so far, I took it on a couple 5-10 mile hikes and never had any problems. The weight of the reservoir balances well. The pack also has a well organized outer pocket for your headlamp, cliff bars, tools, etc. And a bigger inner pocket that fits a couple extra layers of clothing and a light jacket or rain shell if organized well. Overall, I am very happy with this bag and would recommend it to others.
Efficiently carries 100oz! Plenty of room to pack for a day and comfortable. Caught a sale in the store. Great product.
