Nice update of the classic bike bottle
I hesitated to buy this because I didn't want anything that "redefines the bike bottle," I just wanted a normal bike bottle, the kind I've always used, with the nozzle that you pull on with your teeth to open. But all the other bottles at REI were printed with gaudy colors that clashed with my understated roadie aesthetic, so I took a chance on this one. I was pleasantly surprised! It turns out pulling and pushing that nozzle all day isn't necessary, and in retrospect, isn't very pleasant either. This bottle opens when you squeeze it and closes automatically, a simple and streamlined action that lets me focus just that little bit more attention on my riding.
Yep. It's a water bottle!
REI sent me an email asking me to review the CamelBak water bottle I got on sale the other day. Okay then ... My main considerations when planning and researching the purchase of a water bottle are: a) Does it hold water? and b) Does the water come out when I turn it over and squeeze it? Happily, to both questions I can answer YES!! This is an excellent water bottle and I find that I am rarely thirsty when I have it with me, as long as I have remembered to fill it with water. HIGHLY recommended!
Cannot Clean Thoroughly
My husband purchased this water bottle for his bike, but I am the one who cleans it. Because you cannot dissemble the top of the bottle completely and there are many little crevices you cannot otherwise get into to clean, mold and dirt are a problem I cannot completely resolve. When I was trying to use a straw cleaner to get inside the cap, the blue rubber piece that controls the water flow came out. . . it does not go back inside and is not supposed to be removed. Now I have to buy a replacement. Bottom line--clean often and thoroughly in the manufacturer approved ways or your bottle will be gross in no time.
Fantastic bottles, only one thing missing...
We've been using Camelbak podium bottles for years, love them. They are great for riding, I really like never having to worry about a bottle being open or closed when I am on the bike. They are great for the kids since they can hang onto them and we have to worry way less about spills. The only thing missing is camelbak offering the rubber portion of the bottle as a separate item. They wear out, can be difficult to clean, and our kids (when they were younger) would bite on them enough to tear the top ring off. I'd be happy to buy them in a pack of five if selling one at a time isn't viable. It just stinks to have to buy new bottles when the only part that isn't still perfectly fine is that rubber bit.
Actually, this one stands out
I figured this is just a water bottle . . . and of course, it is. But it may be my favorite. It readily fits in the cage. It holds more than the standard 16 oz. size but it is not so big as to make it difficult to put in the cage while riding. The bottle is shaped and indented to allow your hand to grip it well, again making it easier to slip back in the cage. You never have to mess with the valve; just leave it alone and squeeze.
Paradigm Shift
Picked two of these up and am very impressed. No need to bite open the valve to open the bottle anymore. When in the 'open' setting water will only be released when squeezed. Great for keeping your hands on the handlebars and off the bottle while racing. Also easy to operate if you are wearing boxing gloves - just squeeze and enjoy the sweet hydration. Never going back to the classic style.
Perfect
Every once in a while, you find a perfect product and the Podium 21 oz is one of those. I use them for hiking and love the way they work and the fact that they don't leak like all my previous bottles did.
Top Leaks
Purchased last summer (2017) and noticed leaking after six months of frequent, but mild use. It contained only water (chilled or ambient) and was used while commuting or indoors.
Great bottles - absolute bargain
I purchased 4 of these for the family for when we go on rides. My girls are 6 and 8 and love these bottles. No leaks, they fit perfectly on our bikes and are super easy to use.
Love it
This is a great bottle for those of us who drink water like fishes. I take it to the gym, car trips and basically everywhere I go. Doesn't leak. Easy grip. A winner.
