The nicest water bottle I have ever owned
This is probably the nicest water bottle I have ever owned. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade from those plastic bottles. First thing you notice is the quality of the construction, but yet it is still very lightweight. I filled it half ice half water and it kept the ice for over 5 hours in the car on a 50 degree day. You can turn the valve on top to open or close it. I carried it in my backpack most of the day and it did not leak at all. Fits perfectly in water bottle pocket on my backpack and in cupholder of my car. Only downside is that it is too narrow to reach your hand down to bottom to clean it.
Excellent Insulated Water Bottle/Interesting Valve
I received this free product in exchange for an honest review. Hello I am a member of the REI Trailblazers and I receive free products in exchange for an honest review. This is one of those products. The 22 fl. oz Podium Steel VSS Insulated Water Bottle is a solid water bottle, not too heavy, with an interesting way to open it, that I’ll get to later. It Is easy to hold onto, the lid fits nicely and does not leak when turned upside down, and liquid flows very well when the valve is opened. Being insulated is a big advantage here in Florida where I prefer all my drinks stay cold with the addition of ice. In a plastic water bottle the ice is melted and the water warm by the end of the ride, not so with this bottle. I would imagine it will keep hot drinks warm as well. The bottle fits very well in the cage, I had someone say “well its metal it may rattle”, I was unable to make that happen when hopping or riding over rougher terrain. Once I got the hang of it, it was easy to get into or out of the frame. If you look at the size of my frame on this 26 inch bike, you will note the fit is a little close but it works well. At first I thought it would be problematic and I should have gotten a smaller 14 oz bottle, but I quickly got used to it. Now on to the way you open this. I was concerned I could not open it with one hand, or my mouth after removing it from the cage, as I did the older style water bottles with the pull up valve. After a few minutes, bingo why am I trying to open it that way? Open and close it it while in the cage, and voila easy. Overall, an excellent water bottle especially with the insulation and I will now move the older plastic one to a backup role.
Nope for Mountain Biking
I’ve used my Camelbak Podium VVS 22oz stainless on a number of rides so far and I’m not diggin it. This is based on mountain biking... not road, which may spur a different review, but it probably wouldn't be much different. Below are some pros and cons: Pros: - It's durable. I intentionally tossed it onto concrete a couple times from about five feet (on the lid and on the metal part). The plastic didn't crack and the stainless steel bottle didn't dent. Just some scuffs in the paint. - It didn't leak at all when placed upside down for an hour (post dropping), and the rubber/plastic lid was in the locked position. - Water tastes fine after sitting over a day. - It kept water colder longer than a plastic water bottle. - Ice cubes easily fit into the bottle. Cons: - It’s heavy compared to plastic water bottles (12oz / 354g). - Because of its weight, it will definitely get tossed out of your bottle cage during big hits or in fast technical sections. - When you get the brief opportunity to chug water during a more mellow section of singletrack (unless you stop), you can't squeeze the bottle to get that quick swig. You have to suck on the mouthpiece or sit there and let it drain into your mouth. - The mouth piece is of large diameter, which is good for flow, but the hole is almost 1.5 cm wide and is 1.5 inches deep, so lots of mud and trail crud packs into it. Since you can't squeeze the bottle, you can't flip it over and blast the crud out. This is also the case for creek crossings where creek water fills the opening and sits until you gulp it down... (think E.coli, giardia, or in the case of this spout, an entire gambusia would fit comfortably ;). Other Observations: - Can’t put hot liquids in it (not something I'd do, but others might). - It fits fine in a King bottle cage, which is a standard size. Overall, I think this bottle is a terrible idea for mountain biking, maybe 2.5 stars for road cycling. I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I think it’d be perfect for a parent pushing a stroller with a bottle holder, someone biking on a dry paved rail-trail/bike-path, commuting to work (which I'm now using it for), or just use in one's car.
Finally, a steel biking bottle
To start off, this bottle is pretty sweet. It feels solid, built well but not overly heavy. I really like the drinking system on it. It has a flow selector on top which is easy to use, you can turn it on or off but while riding you will need two hands to do it. I normally keep it on for my ride and will turn it off if I toss it in a bag. The flow out of the mouth piece is great. Water gets through with no problem and you don't have to suck on it like normal bike bottles. Being that it is metal, it is a fair bit heavier than the normal plastic biking bottles but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make to use less plastic in my life. If you're one that tracks grams/ounces then this isn't the bottle for you. Besides the weight, there are a couple downsides that reduced this from a 5 star to a 4 star product. The first is completely avoidable and/or easily managed but still a consideration. If you love the paint on your bike frame around your bottle cages then you should put a protective film around them. This metal bottle will incidentally tap your frame and chip the paint. It's not a deal breaker, just something to keep in mind. The second issue is that the location for the bottle retention piece on all standard bottle cages does not fit this bottle. Camelbak placed the indent too high as illustrated in the attached picture with another no name but standard bottle. I tested this bottle on rides on pavement only and while it stayed in the cage, I honestly don't know how it would do if you were riding gravel. I doubt this would work on a mountain bike as it would probably bounce out on the first bump. All in all, I really do like this bottle, the positives of less plastic and solid construction allow me to see past the cons.
Great steel bottle!
This is such a nice water bottle! When I first received it, I was so impressed with how lightweight and fast flowing this bottle was. Being able to hold this, it feels lighter than my other plastic cycling water bottles even with water in it. This is nice because it holds a lot of water and cold water too, where I can put ice in it for a long period of time and still have cold water on my rides. The other nice part of this bottle is when the valve is open 100%, the water gushes. Free flow, no issue trying to suck all the water out of the bottle. However, this could suck if you leave it open all the way because the water will spill everywhere. The one thing that I am bummed out about is that it does not fit my full suspension mountain bikes. The bottle is too tall and wide to fit in the cages on my mountain bike. If this bottle fit, it would have been perfect for all the rides I do! Another thing I am confused about, maybe it's just me, but it comes with a straw inside the bottle but the straw doesn't do anything. I think for me, I will be using this with my road bikes and short day hikes, sadly not with mountain biking.
Great for everyday use!
The Podium Steel water bottle is great for everyday use. It keeps my water cold while I'm out traveling to jobsites, working out in the gym or around the house. The stainless steel keeps the bottle easy to clean, and the shutoff twist top is must have for not accidenly spilling when you kick your bag under your desk. Since the bottle is stainless steel, it has a built in straw that helps avoid having to attempt to squeeze it or throw your head back while driving. Its unique to find a larger water bottle that that fits nicely in several of my backpacks, with a bonus of fitting in the cupholder too!
Great lightweight insulated water bottle
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This Camelback Podium insulated water bottle is very lightweight even when filled with 22 ounces of water. It kept my water nice and cold the entire time that I had it at work and also when I used it on a bike ride. The high flow spout allows the water to pour easily out of the top when you need a drink, and no squeezing or suction is required. The central depression of the bottle allows you to hold onto the bottle securely even with small hands. It fit easily into my water bottle holder on my electric bike. It is made of insulated stainless steel, so it is BPA free.
Great water bottle!
This is a great water bottle! Since the weather was cold and the roads were icy, I wasn't able to go biking but the water bottle fit perfectly on the holder of my indoor bike. Pro: light, easily fits in my (indoor) bike cage or holder, love the lock mechanism that makes it leakproof and spill-proof, it's sturdy, no need to squeeze- just sip, and it kept my water ice cold even hours after my ride. Con: would be nice if there was a removable cover when not in use or when not cycling so that it's more versatile and would keep the lint, germs, sand, etc. away, and I believe handwashing is recommended so dishwasher safe would be more convenient. Overall, a great bottle and will be used often.
Worth the weight penalty
Really nice watterbottle. Its really nice looking now but a few mtb and gravel rides I am sure will take a toll on that nice paited finish. The weight penalty isnt that bad in exchange for not having to drink hot water. I really like what they did to get the water to flow easy. It is easier than my squeeze poidium chill bottle.
Nice bottle but wouldn’t recommend
I like the high-quality feel of this CamelBak but didn’t feel it was worth the price. You can tip the bottle back or use the straw to drink from it, but I never got the straw to work. The twisting open-close feature is nice. It never appeared to work well for insulation, though that is a feature of it. Lastly, it did fit well with my bike, however I think I prefer a plastic bottle for that type of activity. I wouldn’t recommend but it’s not a bad bottle for day-to-day use.
