Broke these in last week while covering 73 miles of Glacier NP. I was looking for waterproofness, lightweight, rigid hikers with good grippy tread and on that front they deliver. The waterproofness was not an issues with left shoe but was not 100% with the right shoe (weird, right?). I'll be contacting Asolo/Rei about that but I think it's an anomaly so I wouldn't hold it against Asolo. These are not cushy shoes so there is a fatigue factor when backpacking or doing long pounding descents. They handled really well in the spring snow conditions on the many passes and snow avalanches we traversed. They're pretty cool looking, low profile and durable to boot.
I purchased these online, ordered the same size as a former pair of Asolos, and the fit is perfect. I'm always looking for the ideal low-top shoe. In hiking shoes, I've used the Scarpa Zen, the Salewa Alpine Trainer and the Salewa Mountain Trainer among a host of trail runners. This shoe definitely feels different. For one, it lacks the cushioning of some hiking shoes. I can feel what's underfoot but not so much that it's bothersome. The sensation gives me a better idea of where the sole is in contact with whatever surface I'm walking on, which is helpful when edging. These shoes are best suited for short hikes where ground feel is more important than a soft ride.
These are currently my favorite pair of shoes. The sole is stiff inside and out, which may not be your cup of tea -- the shoes aren't pillowy soft on the inside and are slippery on slick wet surfaces. The flip side is that they protect your feet from twisting and bumps much more than most shoes in this category. These are also the only pair of waterproof shoes that I've found comfortable in hot weather. I favor very breathable shoes for hot weather, but I wore these at 100+ degrees on Angels Landing in Zion and in Arches NP and wasn't wishing I was wearing something else. Too bad about the durability issues others are having. My pair looks new after half a year.
I have been anxiously anticipating the release of these new low cut hiking shoes in the Natural Shape line. I just returned from a multi-day hiking trip in the Superstition Wilderness and surrounding area where I wore these (out of the box). These are the best fitting low hikers I have ever had (snug in the heal with plenty of room in the toe box) and they are very comfortable. These shoes are lightweight yet they protected my feet during heavy mileage on rocks and gripped well while scrambling in some rather precarious situations. No break-in required (which has been my experience with Asolo) and no blisters/hotspots after five days of heavy use. Did I say that I love the fit of these shoes (so comfortable)?
These Asolos are great boots. Comfort fit, right out of the box. I purchased these 4 weeks ago, and have had several 3-4 mile walks in them.... and they have been great. Their fit makes them unique. They kinda wrap around your foot, and hug it. At first they seem like they need more cushioning, but after a while walking in them you begin to enjoy the sensitivity of the feel of the road. I swapped their insoles for a thin/black set of "Superfeet orthotics, and they are super supportive and comfortable. Very happy, and will buy another pair!! Joseph
Love the fit and comfort of these shoes. Bought them to take backpacking. I have worn them on a few hikes so far to break them in. They are by far the best shoe I've bought in some time! I don't slide around in the. Feels like nothing extra is sticking out. Very efficient.
I bought these on the recommendation of one of my local REI team members. I have a narrow foot for a size 13. With the initial try on and walk around the store the shoes fit great, if not a little tight which I figured would be perfect for break in. Boy was I wrong. I don't know if it's just my foot or this particular pair of shoes but I hate them. They hurt my feet so bad that after a couple of tries hiking around my local trail just walking the dog and then a short hike around Joshua tree. I stopped wearing them. Completely. So beware. If it squeezes in weird places upon try on. That's probably not going to change.
Since my nearest REI did not carry this shoe, I purchased the Agent GVs on line. When I first put them I had the impression I wearing a very sturdy shoe and they seemed comfortable enough for casual wear. However, the shoe's inner soul might possible be the "hardest" I've ever felt while hiking. Thinking they might require some "break-in" time, I used them to day hike approximately 5-6 miles but the entire sole if my feet (toes included) were so uncomfortable with the "hardness" that I gave up and returned them to the store and purchase a set Salomon XA Prop 3D Trailrunners (which are great!).
I purchased these shoes to replace a pair of heavier hiking boots for a 4 day packing trip in the Enchantments this summer. I'm glad i purchased them long in advance because I couldn't have hiked 50 ft in them. After a couple weeks of light use the left shoe began pressing down on my big toe every step. After the bruising went away i tried them again, really hoping i could use them in the summer. Unfortunately the shoe gave me the same problem and i had to use my old tried but true boots. The other thing i don't like about these shoes is the sole is not very grippy on wet wood surfaces.
I have long worn Asolo Hiking boots and decided to give these a try; I first bought some very nice Keen's, that just didnt fit right, a week earlier. REI graciously took back my lightly worn Keens so I took a gamble and ordered these Asolos off the REI.com at size 14, they fit just like the boots and are perfect. I have had them going on 6 months now. They took several days of wearing to break in but I loved them right after trying them on. I have normal feet but size 14. These shoes were true to size, some say narrow; I have not been able to wear shoes labeled "narrow." so with that said I think these are normal and true to size. I bought a second pair for work shoes (I am a contractor). They are holding up really well and whatever protection they have on them is great, I can wash off the grout, drywall mud and various things i get on them while working. Regarding hiking and daily use I used them for hunting and for daily casual shoes all fall and winter and they clean up easy. little signs of wear. We live in Spokane, WA region where the winters are cold and long, they have held up to the freeze/thaw slush, cold, mud and snow. The area around the entrance to the shoe is really nice and seemingly elastic or stretchy, no problems with it rubbing on back of ankle or causing any discomfort at all. I cant say enough about how much I like this shoe. Thanks for reading. (it is uncommon for me to write reviews)
