Great pack. It moves with me and it feels like the pack is one with my body because of the Activflex frame. I have a bad spine and this one carries the load while allowing my body to move. I never feel tippy or hot in it and can adjust easily on trail. There was a problem with the hip belts when they first released this pack in Spring 2014 and REI gave their usual great service and notified and replaced it for me. I never usually load over 30lbs and this one is great for caring that amount. I am looking forward to testing it out on our Mt. Whitney ascent this summer. So far I LOVE THIS PACK.
I love this pack! I just got off 23 days on the John Muir Trail and this pack was so comfortable, holding the weight close to my center of gravity so that it never felt that heavy, even at my max weight of 35 lbs for 10 days. For shorter trips my total weight is about 25 lbs. I shaved at least 3 lbs off my pack weight when I replaced my old pack with this one, and unlike some of the ultralight packs I've seen, has enough pockets to keep things organized without going overboard. The straps that adjust the front compartment are so helpful because you can put a lot or a little in that section between the compartments. The hip pockets are handy for small snacks and lip balm. I'm going to have this pack a long time.
I just bought this backpack and used it for a 15-day trek on the Appalachian Trail. It was comfortable and roomy enough for everything I wanted to carry. My gear was 30-32 pounds. I love the zipper compartments on the shoulder straps and waist straps for keeping my snacks, water treatment, and map handy. I was not in great shape, but I still had no issues with my shoulders or back at all. Many thanks to the REI employee who fitted me with this pack!
I purchased this pack for section hiking the AT this summer and tried it out on a 5 day trip to do the Trans Catalina Trail last week. I'm thrilled with it! I'm 5'6" and my back measurement was 18 inches, which puts me a tad too long for most Small sizes and too short for most Mediums. I tested out a few packs before settling on this one, in medium, and I LOVE it. It's big enough to hold a bear canister but not so big that you'll be tempted to take more than you should. :-) The shoulder straps are scooped for a woman's frame (I'm large-busted and this fit me so comfortably). It fit everything I needed for 5 days and I never had back pain or hot spots on my shoulders or hips. The little compartment on the arm strap is perfect for lip balm and the hip belt easily carries a folded map and iPhone (for quick access for pictures!). And it's so light. It just fits like a part of you.
I just used this pack for a week on the AT. I LOVED everything about it - nice storage, lightweight, and easy adjustments. It really feels good on the body, even for 7 hours a day. I had to rate it a 3, though, because the pack kept falling off of the frame at the top corners from day 2 on. Between my husband and I, we could not figure out the reason, so we finally had to tie it on with some spare rope. As that's a pretty major component to a hiking pack, I had to take a few stars off. It kept throwing all the weight to my shoulders, which makes every move pretty painful after awhile. Will exchange the pack, though, and hope for the best with my 2nd flash pack.
I am very much a beginner pack packer. I did a lot of research and decided on this one because it suits what I plan to do(for now). I went to REI and was assisted with trying it on and checking out others like it. In the end I went with this one and really like it. I've only loaded it with blankets and weights for practice, but it feels great so far. I could see where the front straps might need a little more padding once I'm doing this without a coat to help. But I loved everything else about this backpack so decided I would work on that part myself if needed. I'll add another update this summer after I use it for a real trip. : )
I was borrowing a friend's Oprey pack for a while. I purchased the REI Women's Flash 58 Pack to shave 2 lbs off my total pack weight. That's a huge number for UL backpacking. I used it the following weekend for a trek to the top of Mt. San Jacinto. The pack sits better on my body, holds all the stuff I need, has lots of extra pockets for small items. I love the clip strap for the water reservoir and the outside pack straps for my sleeping pad. I dig it!
Super light weight, and holds a lot! I love all the little side pockets and the mesh area holds a sweater/jacket. Loved it!
I bought this for a week long backpacking trip in the Sierras and by the second day I had huge bruises on and around my collar bones. The straps offer very little padding. I had to wrap bandanas around the straps for added cushion. The two people I was with had smaller packs and about twice as much padding. Maybe my collar bones are just extra sensitive but it made for a very unpleasant trip.
I was so excited when I bought this bag and it worked great for a couple of small backpacking trips when I first got it. However, I am currently on a month long trip around Costa Rica and a week in the frame started popping out of the top corners of the bag. I have tried tying it and taping it but nothing is working. Overall I am extremely disappointed!
