Bought this rack out of desperation and limited supply of options for my VW wagon hatchback. I drove 1200 miles with my mountain bike on the back. Absolutely no issues at all. No slipping, sliding, loosening, nothing! But....I did read previous reviews about slipping, movement, and scratching of paint. So what I did was, purchased a large auto drying cloth for $1 at Dollar Tree and used it to tighten the spaces between the hooks to prevent slippage and prevent paint damage! I just cut the cloth up in small squares and folded it over and placed underneath the pressure hooks and it sealed perfectly on all 4 hooks. Also two pieces of cloth underneath the rack’s bottom legs which were placed on my new paint. To conclude, a $1 Dollar Tree auto drying cloth prevented slippage and paint protection for a 1200 mile journey!

Unstable on my car.

I have had this rack for a few years now and these comments are specific to its fit on my Subaru Forrester. The rack has a tendency to torque with a heavy bike especially when going over bumps. This can cause one or both of the bottom straps to come unhooked. It is particularly unnerving to see it twist in the rearview mirror while traveling at high speeds on an expressway. To be fair my bike has never fallen off, but I have had to pull over on occasion to re-secure the rack. I am now shopping for a metal frame rack with 6 straps.

Solid bike rack

I’ve had this bike rack for a few weeks now. I could not figure out how to tighten lower straps after watching two Saris youtube installation videos:) You have to pull them up to tighten, I kept pulling down. I also wrapped my bike pedal with microfiber towel I had from Target just in case. My bike does not have a standard frame, but I did not have to buy an adapter. I drive to MBT 5-7 miles away from house. I think longer trips would be okay, but want to drive more first.

Convenient and does the job.

This bike rack moved my bike over 700 miles on the hatchback of my Prius 2C. Pros: it works. Cons: it made me nervous until it proved itself. If you whip around corners in local driving, you can see it shift. On the highway it just slowly migrated until it found its own asymmetrical equilibrium and stayed roughly in that place. Once the bike is loaded the top feet don't really touch the car (at least on my car), so the load is primarily on the top two hooks and the bottom two feet. I definitely recommend observing the weight limit. I noticed much more wiggling before I removed the front tire from my otherwise-overweight bike. This thing sets up and comes down in a jiffy. You can't even pretend it's a hassle. So: cheap, convenient, functional

Great Value and Easy to Use

I had planned on buying a roof rack and spending quite a bit of money but Amazon screwed up. I needed something in a hurry because I was leaving for the Cape for a month. I called REI and they recommended this. It was a fraction of what I was planning to spend and it is great. It is easy to put on and mount my bike on it. Though I was nervous on my 2 hour drive, the bike was secure even when one of the lower straps came loose from the bottom. Though I've only used it four times, they were trips of 2 hours each and my bike stayed secure the whole time. It's also small enough to keep in my car when not in use.

Love it

I saw several poor reviews with this rack. Although I initially had doubts because it’s so light, it turns out to be an excellent carrier for my precious road bike !!! One time, I accidentally forgot to secure the top two bands which are the major supports for the bike!! Even then, the bike held and I was able to see my error and corrected it. I would highly recommend it. I am unable to get the tail gate style so my options were limited, but I’m so happy to take the chances of getting this !! I saw one on clearance and almost got it as a back up. Actually I just may go back in to REI and get that one also!!

Flimsy

Bought this rack to put on the back of my Forester ignoring the 1-star reviews and unfortunately have since returned it. I didn’t even make it 10 miles before watching one of the top straps loosen so much in my rear view mirror that the bike went totally lopsided/loose. It seems to be an issue with the mechanism the straps use to stay tightened, they just feel cheap and proved to be unreliable. Bought a Rocky Mount roof rack second-hand that suits my needs much better!

Great Rack

I use this with my 2015 Chevy Trax. It fits really well on the small crossover body and has great pads to protect the car. My only complaint is that I have to have a heavy wool sock to put over the bike pedal or it dings my car while it moves around slightly as I drive, but I've never seen a small bike rack like this thats able to keep the bike from bumping the back of the car. Gets the job done on my vintage fuji.

Do not buy

Awful. I love researching as much as I can ahead of any purchase large or small. Yes, I saw the poor reviews of this rack, but I purchased it ahead of a last-minute trip, and sense I only have one bike, I couldn’t justify needing anything larger. I should have listened to the reviews as this rack is not worth your investment. The straps scratched my car as I was tightening them and once the bike was mounted, the ratcheting straps feel cheap and did little to make me think my bike would stay in place for the trip. I’m returning this product immediately and will not be using it for my trip.

Is exactly what you pay for, not an investment

I drive a Kia Soul hatchback and I ride a 30lb size small mountain bike. I bought this first for my much smaller and less valuable bike. I needed something cheap that would keep me from putting my bike in the back seat. That's all it does and no more. The installation is pretty easy. The metal connection points can chip paint but that's kind of petty to care about that in a grand scheme of life so that doesn't bother me but being said, it does/can chip some paint. The straps are configured so you have to pull UP on the bottom straps to tighten them which makes it a bit of a hassle, especially if you are shorter. The silver clasps that stop the straps from adjusting while don't grip very well and I have to re tighten them before I put my bike on each time. Any bike that is over 20lbs is going to torque the rack which is a bit unnerving on the highway but it hasn't fallen off. They really should put a single strap on each side to stop side to side movement because if it isn't dead center and move to the side the straps aren't dead tight anymore. The two plastic straps that go over your top tube are really meant for a circular top tube. My mountain bike has a wider and flatter top tube so I have to wrap a towel around to stop it from scratching the paint. Overall: For $55 you get a rack that will hold a bike on your car. It won't be pretty or very sturdy but does the job if you don't want to invest in a hitch rack or a multi bike rack. It is pretty quick to install but you give up a sturdiness that you'd want for a nice bike. You also cannot lock a bike to this rack. I wish I had just invested in something that I don't have to watch out my back window on the highway but it moved my bike from point a to b.
