Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

So sad about these shorts
For years these have been my "go to" shorts, starting back in the early 2000s. I tend to buy a couple of pair and wear them, literally every day, until they get threadbare then I buy another couple of pair. I also used to recommend them to all my outdoorsy friends. I was hoping the last ones I bought, with the button (instead of the snap), too small fly, and the bizarre sizing were an aberration but by the reviews it looks like they are still screwed up. I need more shorts like this but I can't continue to put money into such a poor design. If I find something that's more like the old Sahara design I'll come back here and let folks know.
Poor Quaility.....sizing issues
I've had three different pairs of REI Sahara Shorts over the last 7 years. I usually buy one every two years and my original pair can STILL be worn. Amazing. These current shorts didn't last a single year. The ripped along the butt leaving me rather exposed for the remainder of my trip. My original pair has a rip that was repaired from being snagged on a tree, but other than that, they're still fine. I don't know what happened to the quality, but REI needs to address this issue. With the new return policy, I'm hesitant to purchase another pair. As other people noticed, sizing is off. My original pair is a medium and fits perfectly....the new medium is SUPER tight in the waist.
Quality has declined
Come on, REI. These shorts were great a few years ago. I buy several pairs of these for my husband every year because he basically lives AND works in them. But each year something changes about them that equals lesser quality, and these are the worst so far. Even the sizing has even changed. My husband has stayed the same weight but he used to wear a M. Now the size is so tiny, he has to wear a L. That said, they still are decent shorts, I'm still buying them and he's still wearin' em. But REI, please do nothing more to lessen the quality of these shorts any further.
Should have listened to the reviews
This is the first REI brand item which has severely disappointed. Similar to the other reviews, I was replacing a couple pair of my favorite hiking and all around shorts. The current models are inferior in every way. Material, fit, sizing, lack of elastic waist, button rather than snap, etc. I suppose they are less expensive to produce, but are not worth the money. Hope REI will consider returning to the level of excellence in their product that they used to have.
Not The Same
I wear shorts 24-7 and these used to be the best. I owned 8 pair- no kidding. However, the new ones are way different in a bad way. Tight around the legs, less stretch at the waist, less convenient pockets, a button (?) at the waist. Almost seems these were designed as dress shorts rather than active shorts. Too bad- gotta find something else now, as I won't buy this 'new improved' version again.
Bad imitation of the original
I agree with all the previous 1 start reviews of these pathetic imitations of the original Sahara shorts. I own 5 pairs of the original which are far superior in just about every way. The new shorts have a poor cut, lack the built-in belt, don't have a snap, and have poor quality fabric. This has got to be one of most bone headed moves REI has made and has forced me to look elsewhere for some decent everyday/hiking shorts.
REI has lost the plot with these shorts
I started wearing these in 2006 when I took off to backpack around the world. They were the best shorts I'd ever seen. Extremely durable and convenient. They wore great and were pretty much bulletproof. Ever since around 2009/2010, they've started going downhill. Now, they're hopeless. The built-in belt is gone. A must need when you are late for the bus and running from the hostel. The snap is gone, replaced with a button which I'm sure will fall off in a train station in Morocco. The material is too thick to dry quickly when they're washed out in the sink. One of the things I miss the most is the perfectly sized small pocket in the left cargo pocket. It was the perfect size for my phone. I don't know what happened and why REI has decided to continually try to redesign a pair of shorts which were perfect. They are and have been failing miserably. I guess I have to find a replacement from someone else.
What happened to my favorite hiking shorts?
The classic Sahara Shorts were wonderful, the fabric sturdy for sitting on rocks, you could easily walk in it, wasn't too long which is critical for hiking. Now you have to roll up the bottom of this new version to make them short enough. Please go back to the old design and fabric…I'll buy a dozen of the old design. But this version…stay clear, they dropped the ball.
REI - Are you listening to your customers?
Have several pairs of these from prior years - and they are the only shorts I wear. But this years? Horrible! Fit/cut has changed substantially and is very odd now, quality seems poor, style is bad (particularly the side pockets). You had a quality product and these just seem really cheap. If I could give no stars I would. Bring back the REI quality, functionality and styling.
A poor imitation of the classic REI shorts
The REI Sahara short was a favorite for years but REI discontinued it. Now it's back but it's a poor remake of the old version. The inseam is longer, but the leg opening is 2" smaller so it restricts motion. In addition, the old style had a curved inseam which makes for more comfort instead of a straight inseam. The fly is 2" shorter so it's harder to make like a "bear in the woods" with a pack on. The brushed nylon is not as nice as the old smooth nylon. The waist fastener is a button (they break at the worst times) instead of a snap. The back pockets are not as wide or deep, so things come out even with the closure. The belt on the old ones was great, nothing to forget, always there, plus the old belt was designed so as not to interfere with pack belts as stiffer aftermarket belts often do. The mini pocket on the right patch pocket is too small to be useful, plus the mini pocket inside the main right pocket is too small for a cell phone, and coins that end up in it are difficult to get back out. Please REI, get out the old cut patterns and go back to the classic Sahara short.
