Rated 2 out of 5 by from Comfortable but poor durability Bought a pair of these last year and only did about 3 days of hiking in them (about 25 miles total) when I noticed that the material just above the heel cup on the outside of both boots was frayed and coming apart. Clearly a poor design as the rigid heel cup was cutting through the material. I have owned Lowa boots in the past and they were great and the fit of these boots was excellent. Since the boots were only 1 year old REI gave me a refund which they applied toward another pair of boots (Lowa Renegade). I'm hoping these will hold up better. FYI .. REI changed their refund policy and they no longer warranty anything past one year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for arid conditions So, i have a slightly narrow size 12 foot and this boot in size 12 fits like a glove. These fit very similar to my asolo flames. No break in required really. I still broke them in a little but i think they are good to go right out of the box. Best arid/military boot i have ever owned, i have completed multiple 10-15 mile movements in Moab with this boot and will be buying another pair to take on deployment to Afghanistan. Light weight, great looking, awesome breath-ability you will not be sad with this boot if it fits properly. I have had them less than 6 months but holding up great so far. Try on the boot in the store if unsure about size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great PCT Hiking Boot I just finished a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. I used 3 pairs of these boots. You probably could get away with 2 pairs. These boots worked great! Yes they were 1lb 2oz heavier than trail runners. I had to give-up trail runners do to a weak ankle. These gave me perfect support, kept the dirt out, and were more comfortable on rocky trails. They do not breath as well as trail runners. I switched out socks every 3 hours during breaks to solve this problem. Double safety pinning of socks to the back of my pack worked well until rainy Washington.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from JAWS OF DEATH NEEDED I have had these close to a year now and i must say i think i will be buying a second pair. I've been hiked in these things with multiple river crossings and used them in the river while panning for gold and i was afraid of discoloration, odor, and wear (dried over night). After 4 days of constantly being in water and a 6 hour hike back to the truck these pups were still looking and feeling great. These boots are my primary foot wear when i hit the desert for shooting or wheeling, and I've spent a good amount working on my truck and car with these boots on so no worries of slipping in the shop unless of course you keep you floor oily all the time. * There are some boots when you get home you just need to take off to relax, well... these are not those boots.*

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exelent Destert Boot Great desert boot. Good ankle support, non-slip soles, not affected by grease or oil. Breathable, dries fast, not affected by heat. Good traction on sand or rocks or other surfaces such as metal. No heat transfer from hot surfaces. Great and more comfortable with the correct slip in-soles.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Style changed, wish it had not I also had a pair previously in 9.5, which is the same size I wear in all boots/shoes I have bought so far. Loved them, they were the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. Liked them so much, I bought a second pair in the same size for when they wore out. I noticed the style had changed, not sure why. When my older pair began getting worn out I began wearing my new pair. Noticed right away that they were uncomfortable to wear and I had the same problem with them being narrow in the toe, which I never have had a problem with in shoes before. I also wish I had maybe bought them 1/2 size larger, though I am not sure this would make a difference or not. I am not sure how comfortable the new style is, since it seems to fit different in other areas besides the width of the toe. I would recommend trying these one before you buy them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic All Terrain Boot I bought these 3 years ago and they are still going strong. I originally bought these for a desert trip in Southern Utah because they are supper flexible and soft soled for gripping the sandstone. Now I use them all over in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains. These boots are so comfortable it feels like wearing hiking slippers but still offers great support and durability. They They perform great in whatever you throw at them! Getting ready to buy be next pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grerat light weight boot This has to be the most comfortable boots out of the box I have ever owned. Fits me like a hi-top tennis shoe with no break-in period. I have had these now for about 3 years without the problems associated with sole separation or premature wear. I got these to use in the summer down here in the south and wanted a very breathable boot. The light color looked like it would show a lot of dirt but they clean up pretty well. I did not want it to be waterproof - and it defiantly is not but good wet traction. These are not the first choice for heavy backpacking off trail but rather 2-3 day trips or day hikes. The soles are not very cushioned and flexible enough that you can feel sharp rocks. The only part that has worn out is the insole which is easy to replace. If you plan to use these within those limits I would highly recommend these boots.

Are these boots waterproof and if not how would I make them waterproof? If possible.

Asked by: Kessler Sean
The Zephyr Mid Hiking Boots are not waterproof. Using a product like Nikwax Fabric and Leather Waterproofing for Footwear will reduce water absorption. The boots cannot be made to be truly waterproof: https://www.rei.com/product/739359/nikwax-fabric-and-leather-waterproofing-for-footwear These boots are specifically designed to breathe better than waterproof boots in hot weather. I just picked these boots at the "garage" sale at REI and they fit good and are new and fit length wise but right around where the toes meet the foot at the knuckle part I would say they feel narrow. Is that something that'll be broken in over time?

Asked by: whiteoutaircom
It is possible for the Zephyr Mid Hiking Boots to break in and fit properly after some use.
