I mainly hike in Scotland and Spain (and Ireland and Norway. The trek difficulty ranges from walking on a sidewalk to balancing on the top of the world. I am old and have worn out three knees (two total replacements, plus I ruined my last implant during a spectacular fall on Hawaii. At this point, I need the lightest shoes possible, but with still need strength, traction, and protection. These boots fill the bill. Excellent, comfortable fit. Roomy toe box. Excellent traction, yet the soles are flexible. I don't feel small rocks and other trail rubble. And these are comfortable and light enough to wear everyday. I have bad ankles, so I purchased the boot. I imagine the shoe version would also be very good.
I've had nothing but good luck with Lowa boots over the years and the Maddox Pro GTX is no exception. This shoe/boot is the perfect combination of a running shoe and a mid-high boot. It fits and feels like a trail running shoe but offers the protection, ankle support, and durability of a hiking boot. I have only used it for long, hilly day-hikes but I think it would be just fine to use backpacking. Expensive but worth it to me.
