Its acceptable
I got this to replace my worn out Edge 305. This is a bit more fancy and the GPS satellite capture is awesome. I like the multiple bike storage and the ability to name them. I think the mount is an improvement. I am not impressed with the menu system. I really don't like the touch screen either. It was simple to push a button to advance to the next screen, now I am supposed to swipe I guess. After using a cell phone that has incredible response to the touch screen, the Garmin just pales. The UI needs work. Other than that, it still does at least what the 305 did so its getting the job done. But I really would not replace my 305 with this. Well except for the superior GPS and mounting options.
Nice upgrade from Edge 500
I have been using an Edge 500 for several years and until now it was the best non-map cycling computer I had run across. The Edge 510, while not perfect, is a nice upgrade. It offers all the features of the 500 and allows for a lot more screen configuration options. I especially like the bluetooth feature and phone apps that allow easy wireless updating to the web. It's a little larger than the 500 but not too large for competitive riding. The touch screen is not a problem for setup and control of the unit; I find it makes the unit easy to configure and switch between bike and ride profiles (it's easier then trying to figure out which buttons do what...). However, it is very difficult to control the screen display or change anything while riding. This was the reason I rated the 510 a 4; otherwise it's a solid 5.
Makes riding fun
I did research on all of the Garmin computers and decided that the Garmin 510 does everything I need it to do. I have had no problems with this computer. I was a little concerned with the mount with the "rubber bands" but I looped the little string attachment around my handle bars first and then put it on the mount. No problems with it falling off because the string will catch it first. The auto sync with the website is awesome. I have lots of data to look at and it keeps me motivated to get better.
Screen cracked for no reason
Grade and total elevation screwy on this one. Garmin 500 much more accurate. Screen just broke as I was riding yesterday. Day not hot or particularly sunny. Clerk at local REI store hesitant to take back and swap out for new one. Asked if this was a new policy because this is one of the main reasons to buy electronic devices from REI. Clerk said no policy change and then took back cautioning that she was helping me out and that REI might not return defective products in future. I have had to return Edge 405 that was terribly inconsistent and Garmin 500 because of random freezing and HRM problem. Garmin now admits problem with previous "premium" HRM strap but has not recalled. New strap has three elaectrode sensors in strap. Garmin 510 is a great product once configured and working properly. Only problem other than cracked screen was having to turn off weather as I live in fire country and alerts would completely black out screen until cleared (about every 5 minutes with no way to turn off or minimize) Have found Garmin to be inconsistent in both quality and manufacturing. Wish REI would start hammering on them as manufacturer for high return rate than customer just trying to get workable product. Return policy is main reason to shop REI as most products are becoming over priced even with 10% rebate.
Not recommended at this time
I bought the Garmin Edge 510 bundle 3-4 months ago. At first it was great, I appreciated the realtime data available on the unit but especially the data that I was able to upload through Garmin Connect. Unfortunately, at some point, after one or two firmware updates, after less than a month, my Edge 510 stop saving my ride data. Now Garmin has released a Firmware Update (v3.10) that supposedly fixes the problem. However, if my 510 powers down before I can connect it to my PC to sync my ride, the next time I power it up my ride data is lost. Oh, and the syncing to my iPhone 5c never worked. I have done some research online, and it sounds like the functionality was lost after one of the recent software updates. Buyer beware--make sure not just to read professional reviews about GPS products, but check out product forums for real-life experiences. This unit functioned great right out of the box, but within a few weeks I lost all the functionality except what I could see during the actual ride. At least a plain old odometer will keep the previous data until you reset it for your next ride. Very disappointed. I am holding on to hope that Garmin will at some point release a firmware update that will truly fix the problems. Maybe the product is just too new--in a year our two hopefully the bugs will be fixed.
It's a training and racing computer
I didn't know too much about GPS units when I purchased this device. Had I, I might have opted for the top of the line one, 800 series. This unit is great for its intended purposes. It's the first dedicated GPS device I've used. The software interface is comprehensive but clunky. It's all there but there's a bit of a learning curve. If you're use to using something like Map My Ride, or Garafa Kit (******) on your latest version iPhone, you'll experience a bit of let down in performance in some metrics and improvements in others. The nicest thing about this device is its small size, dedicated cycling interface, and the thoughtful bunch of expensive add-ons. The display is primitive, but it's all in the name of power consumption. If you ride a lot, you might as well join your pack of friends who will likely have their own Garmins so you can brag with the best of them.
Great bike computer
The Garmin Edge 510 has performed exactly as advertised. I am very happy with the number of screens and the information contained therein. It holds a charge for ever and has been perfect so far. Easy to set up and use with great online support.
Get ready to turn into a geek!
Manual provided insufficient would recommend downloading the online manual. Took a little time setting up with my turbo trainer but really great to be able to analyse my indoor training efforts.
AUra
easy to mount and use, love it
I would buy this product again.
Easy learning curve,
