This is fabulous!

I tend to get chocolate bars for dessert but took a package of creme brulee for a special treat on our eight-day Grand Canyon hike. It was worth it. Easy to prepare ( I recommend a spoon and bowl), rich tasting with a great crunchy caramel topping--the dessert surprised me with how good it was. I was so surprised that I bothered to write this review.

I have to admit, I'm a Creme Brulee snob; my absolute favorite dessert item to get and to also make at home. I was like a little kid when I saw this at REI and snatched up the last one as if I was in competition with someone else for it. I couldn't wait to eat it, so I didn't.....Made it within 20 minuets of being home to "see if it's worth buying again for my line bag". I'm definitely glad I didn't get more than 1. It could be that I'm not used to eating dehydrated foods, but it tased NOTHING like creme brulee that I'm used to eating. Very artificial tasting and struggled to even get a 2nd bite down. I'm a infantry grunt and current Wildland firefighter, so I've eaten my fair share of questionable items. Not leaving a 1 star due to my possible jaded idea of what dehydrated food is supposed to taste like. Between who ever reads this and me, it's a 1star item for me.

Great for an overnight backpacking trip

This product is lightweight and great for overnight backpacking trips. The whole package includes 2 separate desserts that are individually packaged. The process is simple as you just pull out the sugar packet, pour in 3/4 cup of water and stir. After it sits for 10 minutes the powder thickens and becomes a pudding. Once you add the packet of sugar it’s time to enjoy dessert. The flavor of the pudding is mild but just sweet enough when combined with the sugar. Would make a great dish after a day of hiking and a night around the bon fire.

Wowza

First, I have to say, the flavor of this creme brulee was fantastic, considering it's coming from freeze-dried/dehydrated ingredients. I love that it just takes cold water and a good stir in it's own packaging to make. That being said, there were pockets that didn't get fully mixed because they were in weird corners. I'm not sure how this packaging could be improved to remove this issue, but at least the parts that were still powdered didn't negatively affect the flavor. The flaky sugar bits to sprinkle on top adds that crunch that creme brulee is known for, I only wish there was a little bit more. Overall, 10/10 would recommend. I will be purchasing this for future trips.

Tasty, creamy dessert on the go!

I was excited to hear that I could enjoy crème brûlée on my next camping trip! Very interesting, almost space-age product. Directions were straightforward in preparation. I liked that the packaging could be reused as the prep and eating - less dishes! It was a bit messy - powder when removing the pouch, a bit of a mess in initial stirring - but it’s prepare outside so no big deal. Highly recommend using very cold water to get more of a crème brûlée taste experience. My water was a tad warmer because it was outside for a while. It was more of a creamy / vanilla / frosting like taste versus crème brûlée (bag described it as cheesecake mix). The sugar brûlée packet was clever and tasty. By far the most gourmet dessert I’ve prepared and eaten in the outdoors.

Ok but definitely not Crème brûlée

We tasted this product while camping with some friends: Packaging: light and easy to carry. ;It is messy when you open it. You have to dig into it to find the sugar package and an other little bag that you should not eat. Also when you are done, it would be great to be able to burn or to have a biodegradable package. Taste: the taste is ok, it is very sweet but do not expect a crème brûlée texture. It is more like a pudding kind of texture. It is good and very sweet but again, it is not crème brûlée. As an emergency food it would be ok, but for a 5 days camping trip, I would not eat that every day.

That ain't no creme brulee, it's cheesecake

We were excited at trying this product however it was a let down. Creme brulee is our favorite dessert but it definetely did not taste like it. It had a crustless cheesecake flavor and consistency. If it had been labled as cheesecake I would have given it 5 stars. However, If you are looking for something sweet than it will meet your needs. If you decide to try this sweet dessert we recommend chilling it in a nearby stream.

Creamy Sugar Bomb

The Backpacker's Pantry Creme Brulee was a tasty treat that really did have a lot of that traditional Creme Brulee texture and flavor. Even the included crunchy sugar crystals mimicked a bit of a carmelized glaze. The taste and mouthfeel were both what you'd expect from such a dessert - just from a bag, instead. I did find it a bit challenging (even stirring vigorously) to get all of the powder and water thoroughly mixed. The pleats on the bag probably made this more challenging than anything, but still I encountered no unpleasant clumps of uncombined mix. The actually "cooking" couldn't be any easier, as you only need cold water - so, no heating is required. Some freshly filtered stream water would be a perfect source if out on the trail. I would strongly recommend that this be split amongst at least 2 diners - as it is exceedingly sweet. One person can choke it down, but it's a lot. If you're looking for most of the flavor of creme brulee - whether at home or on the trail - this will fit the bill and is pretty easy to boot.

This stuff slaps

First time I had this I was on an Idaho wildfire and we got some in our food boxes. The experience was absolutely magical. I remember thinking it would be cool if it came with sugar to caramelize, well when I opened it I realized it had pre caramelized sugar to sprinkle on top. It was pretty easy to make too, just add cold water and stir. Just make sure you pay extra attention to the corners because it’s easy to leave some unmixed powder in there. I’d say it’s perfect for car camping or short backpacking trips and it’s definitely something I plan to eat again.

No Complaints!

Honestly, like I always say, when you’re up in the mountains or wilderness, anyone would be more than happy to Mack down on this dessert! It’s sweet and creamy, got a little crunch from the sugar packet you add at the end, just pleasant to eat. Giving four stars cause it’s not exactly crème brûlée, but I mean, cmon, it’s dehydrated and tastes amazing. And because it was good, I’d like to try out this brands other products! Good job Backpackers Pantry!

Not bad for an instant dessert

This was my first experience with a backpacking dessert, and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised. It's pretty light weight, since it's all just powder, and it doesn't require boiling water, which means that you can prepare it without breaking out the stove. Just add cold water, stir, wait ten minutes, and top with the surprisingly good brulee sugar. Is it gourmet dessert? No, and I doubt *most* people would expect it to be. But it's plenty sweet, you get two portions, and you don't have to worry about keeping it hot or reheating it later. Just a word of caution if you're camping: don't open the bag in your tent, or you'll end up dealing with powder everywhere, no matter how gently you open it.

Closely resembles the real thing

Tried this out on the trail last night. When I opened it some of the powder got on my fingers and I licked it off. Tasted kind of like chalky, powdery egg whites. Chocolate keeps me up and so I thought this might me a good alternative. It was amazing. I always try and follow the directions closely and did with this product. I ate the whole bag. Freeze dried foods are becoming so perfected and this one wont disappoint if you like creme brulee. .
