Happy returning customer from Chicago IL.
Great desing for maximum safety and latching to my bike less than 3 seconds. My 6 years old daughter absolutely loves it. Also very light weight compare to others on the market. Overall very good quality high end product. We also own "D-lite" bike trailer and "Soltice" stroller from Burley and very happy with desings and durability. Great job Burley.
As good as it gets
I use this to tool around the neighborhood with my (almost) five year old. I'm sure that it will fit him for many years to come. You know that it is back there, and the weight isn't as low as a trailer, but I think it's as low as you are ever going to get it. I love the rack and the rack/piccolo attachment. I also love that I can carry two full panniers full of groceries while towing my son.
Great Trailer-Bike, Except For Shifter
Things I love about this product: 1) Sturdy, durable, well-built. 2) WAY less side-to-side pull from the trailer than any other trailer-bike I've tried. In fact, this is the primary reason why I bought it. 3) Intelligent mechanism to connect trailer to bike. 4) Adjustable, so it grows with the kids. They will probably be able to ride it until 9 or 10 years of age. 5) Can still carry two panniers on the rack while the trailer is attached, thanks to the specialized rack that comes with the trailer-bike. I would totally give this product 5 stars, except for one significant design flaw: 1) The twist grip shifter is so stiff that a child cannot operate it. This is a big problem for a product designed for children. Though this bike has a 7 speed cassette and deraileur, the reality is that we leave ours in only one gear all the time because the kids can't shift it on their own. It's hard even for me to move the twist shifter. My only other minor complaint is that the seat is not very well designed, so my kid's underside gets rather tired and uncomfortable on the longer trips, but we deal with it. In light of the design flaw with the shifter, I would probably opt for the simpler single-speed Kazoo model instead, if I had it to do over again. I originally opted to purchase the Piccolo because I like to do long rides with my kids (ages 6 & 4) and I figured the gears would help us be more efficient. Also, I wanted them to get used to using gears and handbrakes in anticipation of graduating them to young adult bikes of their own in a few years. But having an inoperable shifter doesn't help much with that goal. On another note, I also purchased the Plus front tire extension in order to convert the trailer into a stand-alone bike. That has proven to be cool. I do like it. The only thing to be aware of is that it takes about 5 minutes to convert between tow-mode and bike-mode and it requires tools. I had hoped the conversion would be easier, but it's not too bad. Our family makes extensive use of both modes. ---Top Secret--- Tip for advanced users only: Don't tell anyone, but it is possible to hook multiple Piccolo's together (see picture below). I'm sure this practice is not endorsed by the manufacturer, but it sure is fun. The picture below is actually me and my actual kids on two actual Piccolos. We've put in a lot of miles with this configuration and had a lot of fun and turned a lot of heads. The main thing to be aware of is that the side-to-side pull on the adult bike is multiplied several times by the addition of a second Piccolo. A single Piccolo is hardly noticeable, but a second Piccolo makes it feel more like there are 5 crazy monkeys jumping on your rack. We've done up to 90 miles in a single weekend while carrying all of our own camp gear for self-supported riding. It was awesome!
Satisfied Bicycle Sherpa
My daughter loves this trailer. I love this trailer. I commute to work and drop my 4 yo daughter off at school on the way. I unlatch the trailer and leave it at her school for my husband to take when he picks her up later in the day. The bike rack attachment is brilliant. I still have a traditional bike rack for hauling stuff. AND the latch to attach the trailer is insanely easy to operate. The trailer seems pricey but when you read the description you'll see that the trailer can be transformed into a regular bicycle in the future. THAT is a huge selling point for me. I also love that my 7 yo daugher can easily use the same trailer by raising the seat. The trailer is great quality, a snappy green colour that we love and it even comes with a flag.
Great ride!
We purchased this bike trailer for transporting my son to school behind his Dad's bicycle. Today was the first day of school and first day we used it and it worked great. My son is 6 and seemed comfortable and confident on this Burley ride a long trailer. I decided on this one over some of the others because it was lighter and looked like it would come off and back on easily, which it does. My husband said the initial install to his bike was a little tricky but managed to do it.
Unable to install
I would love to be able to provide a review of this bike add-on but have had an incredibly challenging time trying to find someone that can tell me if this fits my Co-Op DRT 1.1 bike and if it does what extra parts I need and how they work. I’ve tried calling my local REI bike shop and using a contact form in the burley website adding pictures of my rear wheel with no response from either. Everything I’ve read states ‘fits some bikes with disc brakes’ but no information about :specifically which bikes. My daughter is really excited to use this ‘team’ bike, but for now it sits in the box it came in.
Very sturdy / well built
Despite reviewers complaining about compatibility with disc brakes, I was able to get it to work with the disc brakes on my Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike by cutting off excess tubing that was contacting the brake caliper. Easy modification and now works great. Very highly recommend as the trailer bike quickly releases and is very sturdy even over bumps, etc.
Instant hit!
Yes, the install is pretty specific and your bike must be able to accommodate the moose rack. Luckily there's enough information/pictures online at various sites where you can determine if it's going to fit your bike or not. I was able to fit it to my cruiser, and it was an instant hit with my 3 year old. His legs aren't quite long enough with the seat post, and we haven't decided if we're going to trim it down, or just let him grow into it. It felt extremely stable. I wouldn't say I'm an advanced bike rider by any means, I just ride leisurely through parks and campgrounds and this will be perfect. Much better than the carrier at his age and we won't have to figure out how to carry his bike back when he's tired.
Fabulous way to get your child confident
We have found this to be a wonderful way to get our 7 year old used to riding on the street (versus the park). It is really simple to adjust the seat height for more that one kid to ride. Not easy to detach off the adult bike (if you wanted to ride with your kid to school, but then bike solo to work), but actually rides well with no child on the back.
over engineered
This product is not compatible with many bikes with a very complicated and cumbersome hitching system. It hooks on to a carrier rather than seat post which means it cannot be switched between bikes unless the whole carrier is moved. I tried to fit it on 2 mountain bikes and neither of them were compatible. I think the product is over engineered and was a waste of time. I returned and got the much simpler and more versatile Novarra afterburner which works great.
