This is an amazing product. It makes a 15+ pound pack feel like 5 pounds on my back. It didn't feel like I was carrying anything and was nicely balanced for scrambling over rocks and crossing logs over streams. I had a bunch of food, jackets, 3 liters of water and all my emergency supplies and there was extra space, too, had I needed it. We did an 8 hour hike that day, climbing Mt. Tallac and hiking to Lake Aloha, and the pack felt light on my back the whole way. Another day we were drenched by rain, and the pack stayed dry with the rain cover on it, though my waterproof hiking boots were soaked through. I heartily recommend this pack!
And I'm not talking about the color, though it is nice! Usually things don't live upto their online looks, but the moment I tore open the box, I knew it would be everything I expected. It's so nicely constructed, and I poked and pulled at every square inch. I'm 5'4" and the small is a perfect fit. Coming from a background in massage (and proper body alignment), I love the curve of the pack and the great weight distribution...it's just so comfortable and functional! I'm a loyal Gregory fan now!
I'm 5'5" with a fairly small build so I needed to buy a women's small. It fits me well but really wish the medium fit because the hip belt pockets on the small are smaller than the medium and worthless to use except for pair of keys. So there is no where to put a small camera or anything that you may want to use often without taking off the pack or asking someone else to get something for you. Also on the women's small, the hydration pocket is smaller and shorter than on the medium and it is a struggle to fit a 70 oz. hydration bladder into it. I'll be using this for a 9 day trek in northern Romania and although I have not gone on the trek yet, I've been going on walks with it to get used to it before the trip.
I love this pack! I purchased mine in Spring 2011 (same style, just different colors) and used it all summer and fall for day hikes - some up to 14 miles. The pack has been nothing but comfortable from day one. The straps and belt stay in place and have many options for adjusting, making for the perfect fit & balance as well as keeping the pack close to my body. I am 5'6", 145 lbs with a longer torso. The Medium frame fits me well. The stiffer frame with back mesh/ventilation is new for me, but I really like it. There are plenty of good-sized pockets for stashing or separating things.
I needed a daypack for 90+ degree desert weather that wouldn't put too much strain on my shoulders. The hip belt on this bag is wide and well padded. The bag is also slim in width which allows for a full range of motion. The shoulder straps aren't itchy against bare skin. It fits plenty of liquid, food and a few layers comfortably. I tested it out on a 14 mile hike in 85 degree weather and it was perfect. The mesh panel that keeps the pack off your back is fantastic. This is a great daypack for those willing to carry a slightly heavier daypack that distributes the weight down to your hips.
I was looking for a simple pack for day hikes, mostly for when we decide to go 15 miles on a whim because the weather is nice and we've never been there before. I love the lumbar support, but once I have it packed the tear drop shape can make it difficult to take stuff out. I use it everyday for light loads and for school books, and my back never hurts! it definetely makes you stand up straight. it serves the purpose of what I was looking for, putting in a few layers of clothes, food and water and going. for longer hikes and more gear I would recommend the Jade 38.
Going on a trip to hike in Utah. I will hit Zion, Bryce and Arches so I needed a good daypack. I have to say it is worth getting fitted by one of the REI team. I have tried other packs but had chaffing and ultimately just felt uncomfortable. With this trip coming up, I knew I needed a good pack. Decided to actually let someone help me and it was worth it. He fitted me with a small (I am 5'4" 145lb.) but had I not asked for help, I would have chosen the medium which would have caused a problem. I did a 5 mile hike with the pack today and it rocked!! Weight felt distributed evenly and did not pull on my shoulders. I actually felt like I walked with better posture with it on than without. Will update after my big trip in April.
I bought this product to take on a trip to Nepal for a 6 day trek, to carry just my personal items such as a camera , some food & a rain jacket. While the pack worked OK for the trek itself, I also used it as my carry on piece for travel and business for another 7 days of travel. I only wanted to take one pack as I was traveling light .I found the pack not well organized for airplane or day to day travel. The fact that none of the stapes tuck away , and were hanging all over the place especially the waist belt was a problem, especially going through security checkpoints . I did like the suspension system as it did keep my back ventilated & cool on the trek itself . I found the pockets on the waist belt really too small to carry much of anything other than one PowerGel. Also the water bottle pocket was not deep enough to hold a water bottle in place . The straps that were designed to hold the hose to my hydration system are already stretched out after only 6 days of use & tearing. I did not have any need of the rain cover , but it is a nice feature . Over all the pack was comfortable and carried what it needed to.If you are just planning on using it for a long day hike it will be fine, for anything else not so much.
I bought this pack for daily use on the Tour du Mont Blanc. Since our luggage was taken from place to place, I just needed a day pack. This one worked perfectly. It was just the right size with enough room for what I needed during the day plus extra room. I will be using this pack a lot in the years to come.
I've been a fan of the Gregory packs for two+ years now- this is my second pack. These are the best woman's packs I've found (I've tried many), and best of all they work great on my plus-frame frame. The straps fit all the way around, and are super adjustable. Best of all? The straps STAY where you adjust them to- no slipping. This certainly isn't an overnight pack, but I have plenty of gear, including an oversize first aid kit for the whole family, and plenty of room still for lunch or snacks.
