Gives the Half Dome even more versatility
The footprint is strong but lightweight, and allows you to set up the Half Dome (my model is the Half Dome 2 Plus) with just the fly, for trips where you're trying to save weight and mosquitos aren't a problem. See the photos.
shiny side up
from REI website: Footprints typically have a shiny (coated) side and dull (uncoated) side. You should place the dull side on the ground (shiny side facing up) in order to minimize abrasion on the coating. Also read on another review that good trick is to take grommet from footprint and wrap up and over grommit of tent...so when putting pole in grommits it goes thru footprint grommit first and tent grommit second...that way footprint is attached to tent and can move it around easier as one unit together
A substitute...
FYI -you can use the Quarter Dome T2 + (plus) footprint on the Half Dome 2+ tent, if, like me, you find the half dome 2+ footprint constantly out of stock. The half dome 2+ footprint measures 91"x49" and the quarter dome T2+ footprint is 90"x51". I know this from personal experience. Just tested this on my tent and it works fine. The color coding on the footprint tabs is different, but this really doesn't matter with the footprint as there is no orientation to it.
Keeping things grounded
For the dollars it works well. You can get by with a piece of plastic sheeting but this has a few advantages that make it worth it. The big plus: Set the poles up into the foot print and put the rain fly over it and you can set it up in the rain. Throw the tent in under the rain fly and clip it in place. Nice and easy and everything is dry. That's really nice. Also, it's already cut to fit and color coordinated with the tent poles for easy installation. Time I don't have to fuss with cutting something to fit. All in all worth the extra for the ease of use and additional function. You could get by without it, but for what it is it's very good. I've done the rain set up with this tent and it was really great when compared to trying to setting the tent first and putting the rain fly on after. I'm glad to have it.
Expected it to be sturdier
This footprint is very light and compact, making it great for camping or hiking, but it disappointed me on my recent trip. I've only used this footprint twice and when I packed it up the last time, it had holes in it. I understand that it is subject to what is underneath, but it is not always possible to camp in an entirely clear and smooth area. I was surprised at the holes because there was no moving around of the tent, only the pressure from me on my sleeping pad, but that was enough to cause the holes from benign objects. It did save my tent, which is the ultimate goal, but I can't see buying this footprint again for fear that this will be a continuing cycle. I know that lightweight materials can be made stronger...
Which is the coated side?
This is a great, lightweight footprint - a must have for the HD 2 Plus. However, I just wish the instructions were more clear. The instructions say to place the footprint "coated side up". Upon inspection, it's difficult to determine which is the coated side. Is it the tacky side with a rubbery coating, or is it the smooth side? Would it have been so difficult to print "this side up" or "this side down" on the footprint or give it some other distinguishing characteristic? So, other than poor instructions, the product is great.
Works well and attaches easily
The half-dome 2 Plus footprint attaches easily to the bottom of the poles used to erect the tent. Made it easy to move the tent around while I was looking for the perfect spot for the tent - without having to re-position the footprint.
Loose fitting grommets make this less than ideal.
I just got the tent and the footprint to go with it. The footprint is good except that the grommets are 1 inch or so farther out than the tent grommets. During set up, they keep coming off the pole ends. REI says attach tent grommets, then footprint, then fly to keep the footprint attached. (Still during set up they slip off. Corners of footprint disappear under the tent, etc. Annoying!) What if I am not using the fly? Footprint first I guess, but I just don't understand the logic of making them so loose.
Does the job.
The advantage of a tent specific footprint is that it intgrates with the pole system so you don't have it sliding out and not protecting the floor. That said, I purchased the Half Dome 2 plus after many good years with my original Half Dome. The second night in the tent was a doozy. Heavy rains pelted me all night. The tent stayed dry from top to bottom. No floor leaks. You can say I was a happy camper.
Confused
I understand that the primary purpose of the footprint is for lightweight, dry camping so that you can leave the tent body at home. That said, I purchased the footprint to place under the tent body to add a little additional protection to the tent body. The footprint is several inches longer than the tent body and therefore must be folded underneath the tent and the loose fit causes the footprint to fall off the tent if you need to adjust the position of your tent. I believe this is a design flaw and the footprint should have the same dimensions as the tent body. I'm confused why it does not.
