Didn’t work until I did this first

I’ve tried Nikwax a few times but it never really worked before. Out at REI couple days ago and thought I’d give it a try one more time. Before washing jackets, I came across a YouTube video that recommended running an empty hot wash cycle (complete) to clean out residual detergent BEFORE running a Nikwax detergent cycle with jackets. And then run the cycle with Nikwax TX wash in water repellent. 3 cycles in all. Hassle? A little. Functional? Definitely. I used a front loader at home with 100ml detergent for two coats. And 100ml water repellant as well. Didn’t let coats dry between cycles. Dried on very low heat after doing water repellant cycle.

Sticky White Goo

While I have used this product before with success, today this product RUINED several of my very expensive North Face Goretex Jackets and Snowpants. A white sticky goo coats everything including my washing machine. I have tried rinsing and soaking and rewashing the load, but the goo does not dissolve. I'm extremely upset. And there's no way to contact Nikwax on the weekend. No email or web form to report issues. Their FAQ specifically states that Nikwax TX Direct will NOT ruin washing machines or clothes, but in fact when I do a search online, I see that many people have experienced the same problem with no solution, no tips on how to get rid of the sticky goo.

The industry standard DWR treatment, ok longevity

This is the standard waterproof DWR treatment for most outdoor and active wear products. Its easy to apply, either in a bucket or in the washing machine. You can also spray it on but I find it most effective to soak and dry in the washer/dryer. Its quite expensive and can cost a decent amount to waterproof your gear, especially if you have a few large items to retreat. My only concern is that it works best when its dried in the dryer on high heat but most technical fabrics don't do well with heat so playing it safe often results in fast wearing DWR. It also never quite works as well as the factory coating so I often have to apply at least once per year for high use garments.

It really works!

I got this recently when needed to waterproof several windbreaker jackets. Was a bit skeptical but since it did not cost an exhorbatent amount I figured it was cheaper than getting new jackets. Followed the easy to read instructions and "Presto!" the jackets came out just looking good. A few days later son wore one of the jackets while going out to his car during a heavy rainstorm. Below the waste not cover by the jacket and was soaked. His torso was dry as a bone. The treatment worked as advertised.

Amazing stuff!

We just got finished treating all of our rain gear with Nikwax. First we washed all of the garments in the wash with Tech Wash. Next, we ran a cycle in the wash with the TX.Direct. We then dried all the garments in the dryer. Today, I walked to the bus stop in the rain and my rain jacket was like brand new. The water was immediately beading on the surface, compared to last week when it was soaking the surface with each rain drop. Just follow the directions and you'll see why people like this stuff in rainy areas.

This stuff works

I washed my carhartt rain gear (1 coat and 1 pant)and my carhartt canvas coat in this stuff and followed the directions to the letter , directly after washing all 3 in nikwax tech-wash (I used a measured out water bottle courtesy of OHSU to measure both products), my canvas coat (which wasn't waterproof at all, in actuality was a better towel than a rain coat) now can carry water from my bathroom to my living room (a 15-20 foot walk) on it and I poured it out into a cup showing my friends how well this stuff works with minimal soak in. I filled my dogs waterbowl with the rain coats hood after standing with water in it a good minute, anyone looking to revive or waterproof a coat/pants get this stuff and tech wash. Follow the directions and you won't be disappointed

Been using it for years!

Product works well to revitalize the DWR properties of all my shells. Here are some tips and tricks that have well worked for me over the years. 1. Use Hot/Warm water. This helps the wax soften/dissolve, which will increase penetration. 2. Use minimal water - just enough to cover the garments. The more water you use, the more diluted the wax will be. I often use more than the recommended amount for better results. 3. Add Nikwax into the water and avoid pouring directly onto garments to avoid wax stains. 4. Fully submerge garments before wash. Gore-tex/waterproof membranes trap air, which causes parts of the garments to float above the water throughout the entire cycle. This is especially important for top-loading washers. 5. Use Techwash to keep your garments clean. Typical household laundry detergents are formulated to be tough on stains, including wax.

Rain, rain, go away!

I love this product! Nikwax is a reliable waterproofing product that does not disappoint. I have used it on all out coats & jackets that we rely on for a waterproof garment. I’ve even used it for backpacks & hats. I’m a cautious consumer & a former paid customer service critic so believe me when I say this is a reliable product! Thanks!

Great stuff!

Use this frequently on my rain gear... 4-5 times a year. After neglecting rain gear for so many years and watching the quality wither away, I tried using tx direct for one year, once a month, and my new rain gear has stayed new for 2 years now!
