watered down pricing
Great stuff, but how to raise prices without raising the price? Water it down! Our old bottle (2019) recommends 3 oz for a front-loader load. This bottle calls for 5 oz for the same load. LOL
Works perfect
Second GeoReubs' experience with surfactant based soaps. If you don't believe that you need special soap, just try it and find your jackets/pants leaking in the rain; those soaps will destroy the waterproofing. Years ago I ruined more than one jacket and have never seen problems since switching to appropriate suds. On the flip side, don't wash your tent except by hand, lest you find yourself buying a new tent. I have used this soap via hand pump sprayer and light soak, then rinse away on a tent and works fine. And yes, materials do eventually wear out; the lighter you tent material, the shorter it's life, so just accept that and be prepared. I also use this soap on non-leather boots, portions of boots/shoes, gloves, etc. Just wished they still sold this in the gallon jugs.
Worth the Cost!
I use this when washing my high end hiking / backpacking clothing, jackets. I used to use other (powder) laundry detergents as allowed but noticed that I had to re-waterproof them about every 2nd wash as they started absorbing moisture. I tried this and noticed that the waterproofing last much, much longer (at least four washings on most items so far). The added cost is worth it for the added comfort (and money saved by extended uses before having to re-"wash" with the Nikwax Waterproofing solution.
Works great
I washed my carhartt rain gear in this and my carhartt canvas coat prior to using the TX direct wash in waterproofer and it mostly revived the waterproofing and slightly waterproofed my non-waterproof canvas coat, after washing in the tx direct wash in they all might as well be buckets. Needless to say I will be washing my rain gear in this stuff and only this. Atleast bi- monthly if not more often as needed.
Great cleaner for outdoor gear
We've used Tech Wash for years on our outdoor gear: snowboard pants and jackets, puffy jackets including patagonia nano airs, shells, and even a sleeping bag (synthetic filling only, not down). It cleans the materials well and seems to re-up the water resistance / waterproofness abilities of the gear. It doesn't get out the super difficult stains but will work on your standard dirt, sweat and grime.
I'm a believer now...
See my similar review for this company's wash-in waterproofing product. Here's a confession… I used to scoff at the idea of having to wash my waterproof/windproof gear with a special cleaner. I didn't believe it was necessary to wash the garments with care. As such, I would simply wash my waterproof/windproof clothing using liquid laundry detergent, and I NEVER treated anything with a waterproofing agent! Later, whenever I wound up in the middle of a rain storm, I would wonder why I always got soaked despite wearing what was supposed to be world-class gear. I now know I was making huge mistakes. I recently gave in and started using this cleaning product before treating my field clothing with the waterproofing agent made by the same company. What a difference! My 10-year-old jacket now looks like its new! To my surprise, it looks absolutely great, and sheds water like an oilskin duster; same goes for all my other gear that I finally started treating. I've learned my lesson. From now on, I'll be using this product on a regular basis. Best of all, it's easy to use.
It cleans Gore-Tex gear
I washed my Gore-Tex motorcycle gear with this product. After driving to Arizona in 2021 and Alaska this past June 2022, I felt it was time to wash the motorcycle jacket and pants. My gear came out of the washer clean using this as the cleaning agent. After drying the gear, I then sprayed the NikWax TX. Direct Spray on to help restore the Gore Tex properties (if possible). The jacket and pants have not let water in since being washed and treated with NikWax.
Makes things better than new!
I used this on a winter sleeping bag and a 3-season sleeping bag. In both cases, the sleeping bags were so fluffy that I couldn't get them back into their original stuff sacks! I also use this regularly with a comforter in my Airbnb room, and it really restores the loft beautifully!
Us it on ALL my outdoor cloths
This is great! I have very sensitive skin to certain allergies, my normal clothes wash is very particular. This wash for all my outdoor clothes does not bother my ski at all though!
Revived rain gear
My OR Helium stopped repelling water during a recent storm. The care instructions and REI associate recommended this wash. It took a few washed (the jacket was two years old and never washed), but this did a great job of getting dirt out and reviving the materials. I’ve used it on other water repelling gear (tent, backpack) and noticed a difference in how clean they felt after use.
