I used this product in the Peruvian Amazon jungle. Since it was 100% DEET, I only sprayed my exterior clothing. I used this in combination with a lower DEET concentration lotion which I applied directly to my skin. Between the two products, I had no bug issues. Bugs didn't swarm at all. One bug tried to land on me, but immediately flew away. Just be sure to keep this product away from any plastic material, as it will melt plastic (watchbands, cameras, etc). Only complaint is that that container leaked a little. I had it double-bagged in ziplock bags, so it didn't contaminate anything, but tended to get all over my hands when I pulled it out. I had to be careful not to touch anything until I washed my hands.

Great Stuff

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like going hiking, but what I don’t like is having to deal with insects. Where I live mosquitoes and gnats are terrible. I have tried many different kinds of insect spray. Some of them work for a couple of hours and then there is some that just don’t work at all. I got a bottle of Ben’s 100 Tick and insect repellent. The bottle looks very small, but it goes a long way.instead of having to spray yourself many times. This works great and doesn’t stink at all. I put some on before going Hiking and it lasted all day long. No mosquito bites at all. I am taking this bottle everywhere my family and I go.

Great repellent; Leaks everywhere!

I bought this at an REI store despite seeing the review below about how the bottle leaks. I can confirm - this bottle LEAKS. EVERYWHERE. I was worried when I took it out of the packaging and the bottle was oily and sticky. It only got worse once I hit the trail. I had to store the bottle in a separate plastic bag but it just made a sticky mess. This caused a few problems when I had to store it in the bear can for the night. It's a real shame because the actual repellent itself works very well. A couple of sprays on my hat and shirt kept all the bugs away. The size is perfect for backpacking. They just need to figure out how to stop the bottle from leaking.

Is very effective at keeping skeeters at bay

While on a 4 day backpacking trip. We set up camp next to a wilderness creek and the sun came out shortly after. And so did the little bloodsucking bugs. I had treated my clothing with permethrin days prior. I used the Bens 100 on all exposed skin and we're surrounded by mosquitoes for a few hours prior to dark. I came home with only 1 bite. I don't believe it gets any better than that. All deet products leave an oily feeling to you skin, so knowing to expect that is important. Also follow instructions on what NOT TO apply deet to as it can damage some products. But in the end, Bens is good stuff. It's my go to.

Flying Monsters -----Go AWAY!

Spent 4 nights in High Sierra in Yosemite area 2nd week of Aug and never needed to use as much protection/repellent in my life. As soon as I srayed this on me, the response was immediate relief from the flying monsters. I am glad I double-bagged it as it did leak :( And the fact that I felt like I had to reapply every few hours has me questioning 10hours. Overall, I will be headed out for another trip and this will be joining the pack once more! if you can't stand mosquitos and want to have any level of repreive when they are everywhere, I would recommend this product. Leaky and longer lasting will help me feel this is 5 Star worthy.

Terrible packaging! Leaks everywhere!

I should have known there was a problem with this product when the curbside pickup delivered a package that looked as though this had melted plastic. I exchanged it for another one and the second I hit the trail the bottle started leaking. I made sure the cap was tightly screwed on, and I put it inside a sealed ziploc bag. By the end of the weekend the bottle had leaked and somehow seeped through the ziploc and leaked on my silicone water bottle, causing it to be glued together and irreparable. I don’t know what on earth is wrong with this bottle but I will not be purchasing it again. The spray itself is fine at repelling mosquitos.

Superior bug repellent with some trade offs

This is the most effective bug repellent I have ever used, and as a native Floridian, I’m all too familiar with fighting mosquitos and ticks. It’s strong enough that it will even keep mosquitos and other bugs off of people sitting near you. The trade off: as expected with a 100% DEET product, this stuff stinks to high heaven. Also as expected given its strength, it is extremely greasy and sits on top of your skin for a very long time. Because of this, it will get your clothes and gear greasy on contact. If you’re in an environment with aggressive bugs and can deal with being a stinky greaseball, I don’t know of another product that is more effective.

The Best

Thank you REI... for stocking this product in Texas. I could only find it in Alaska for years. Hands down the best bug repellent you can get absolutely no bites ever. It's not for everyone though if you are on a gluten free or vegan diet, or rock a man bun you probably won't like this. But I've worked from Fairbanks to Beaumont and trekked through Costa Rica and Brazil and have never had one little critter bite me as long as I had this in my pack. If you want to be super environmentalist or are concerned about every single thing that you put on your skin look elsewhere. I will trust the US military and stay Lyme Zika and west nile free.

It does keep the bugs away

I know many people hate DEET and I am not going to try to convince anyone that it is good to spray this stuff on your skin. But for me the trade off are bug's constantly attempting to turn me into their personal food truck and I hate that more. So I have tried a number of DEET products. Assuming you are willing to use DEET I like BEN's the best, I like the small spray bottle, It has no scent which is really great, my wife hated being around me when I wore most of the other products. It really does work, so for me this is my favorite bug repellent. Though I also strongly recommend permethrin as well
