Great Tape! New Package Booo!
The tape itself is great, not without limitations but a great all around repair tape. I would give it 4-5 stars BUT it used to come in the plastic screw tube you see pictured. Handy to throw in your pack or bag without trashing the tape itself. Now it comes in a worthless, oversized cardboard box, taking the roll of tape in and out and back in again is a hassle. Often, even when careful, the tape can get stuck to the packaging when trying to put it away (see pic tape, tape started to curl when I tried to put it back, yes I would the roll smaller than the box :-) ) Still recommend it just wish they would go back to the old packaging.
Strong stuff
I used this tape as a "temporary" fix for a Thermarest NeoAir pad with a tear and an REI Flash 18 that ripped when I (cruelly) hauled it up a granite chimney. Never did get around to a permanent patch for either one, but after many more trips and a lot more abuse, the tape held up. No leaks in the NeoAir. The only sign of aging is a little bit of dirt around the edges of the tape. There are a couple of things I did to help the tape stay in place. First, I put a matching piece on both sides of the pack fabric for reinforcement. Second, I rounded the corners of the tape with scissors. It seems like sharp corners would peel off more easily.
Strong and unnoticeable
The tape is great. From the moment it comes out of the package, it is evident that the material is strong and protectant. The application was easy as long as 1. You can follow directions, 2. You can manage to keep the feathers in, and the hole shut. It took me a few tries to keep the feathers from peeking out. So far, after a few weeks of everyday use in rainy/snowy days, the patch has held up superbly. I completely forget that I have a patch on my favorite jacket, that is a great thing. Just make sure to apply over a flat surface, putting pressure from the center out that way no air pockets are created.
Awesome Stuff!
I really really like this stuff. Outdoor gear cost so much these days and this keeps your favorite gear in service again and again. I bought it in black and have patched 6-8 holes in my favorite Primaloft jacket which was new in 05. It blends in well and does not come off in the rain or in the washing machine. I have always applied it to clean dry fabric and it stays put. Recently i just patched a hole in my brand new DD tarp due to a runaway ember from our fire. I have not tried using any DWR products before of after applying the patch, i suppose that will be the next test. Thank you Gear Aid for keeping a lot of my equipment in good working order.
A great product!
This tape is a godsend for repairing tears that inevitably happen to very delicate ultra-light down jackets. I wish manufacturers would work with this company to create matching varieties of tapes to make repairs even more transparent
Perfect!
I was looking for something to repair a hole in my dog’s coat and this worked perfectly! My dog has been sprinting around the snow (which is how she originally ripped the coat) multiple times since I used this tape on it and so far it’s holding up. I have a few holes in my sleeping bag that I’m sure this will work well for, too.
The product is excellent for permanent patching
The product is excellent for permanent patching of rips or tears in soft gear. Unfortunately it is much more expensive than your run of the mill duct tape that we have all been using for patchwork while on the trail. I still carry the standard duct tape (since it also works well on blisters, tent pole repair, and just about everything else) as temporary patching while on the trail, but replace the temporary patch with the nicer looking - although more expensive -Tenacious Tape for a permanent patch on tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, jacket, etc. It comes in the most common colors to blend in well and it also comes in "rip-stop" design.
Tape is great, pre-cutting bad, packaging bad
The tape is a 5 and I have been using for years on rain pants, snow pants, down jacket, down sleeping bag, rain jacket, tent. They used to supply a carry case (see JRAMDOM review) with a screw cap tube to keep the tape from getting mangled when stored which was very effect. Without the case the tape gets beat up and starts to separate from the backing, especially now that they have pre-cut the removable backing. The backing can separate and allows air to dry out the tape along the cut line. The grid pattern is nice on the backing but the pre-cut is inconvenient where placed and NOT needed and should be removed. But the tape is great if not compromised due to the pre-cut.
Perfect for what I needed
I bought this to fix a small rip in a Patagonia down jacket that I got at REI on sale. I got clear since the jacket is purple, which makes the one spot where I used it look slightly more opaque, but if I didn’t know to look for it there I don’t think I’d really notice it! It’s pretty easy to use, and I took the jacket on a camping trip already and it doesn’t seem that my patch is going anywhere!
A must have in your pack
I was out backpacking in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, when my favorite backpacking boot decided to fail. The sole was coming off the boot. My brother-in-law had some Tenacious Tape which he had never used. He cut and ran the tape between the boot and the sole. We weren't sure how this was going to hold. Amazingly, it held very well. After hiking over granite rocks, and dodging T-Storms, my sole stayed intact. Even more amazing, my feet stayed dry in the stream crossings! This stuff is amazing. Bye-bye duct tape!
