Good way to prevent accidents

I used to use cardboard rolls to prevent accidental pokings or tearings during transportation or while atcha to my pack. However it will easily get wet and destroid. So I decided to give this protector a try. It works great. It fits perfectly on the spike of my Reven ice axe and Venom ice axe. It also works for my viper ice axe. But it doesn't fit as perfectly. Some of my friends also use different brands of ice axes and the spike protector fits well over the spike. So if you have other than black diamond ice axes, I would recommend comparing the spike to the one balck diamond uses. But I’m almost certain that it will work.

Quality protector—just don’t lose it!

The spike protector is well-made with quality materials. I use it with my Petzl Glacier. As a couple of others have noted, it can become detached under stress. I thought I had cinched the spike protector down tight, but this weekend it got pulled off by some branches while I was bushwhacking a forest. I didn’t realize it was gone until later. You can tell I like it because I’m buying another one.

Great for what it's for!

What's not to like? Stays put and keeps your ice axe from giving you an unwanted lobotomy.

Spike protector

It seems solid, secure, and lightweight when used on a conventional BD spike. I say seems because I haven't flown with it yet and so far, have only done one road transport. While it is designed for conventional spikes it also seems to work for the different spike style of the BD Raven Ultra ice axe; I'll be buying a 2nd Spike Protector for it instead of messing around with improvised protectors. I've used BD's Axe Protector on the head of my Ultra for years and it has been fantastic. I expect the Spike Protector will be just as good.

Fairly Universal

Appears to be fairly universal. Bought two sets, and they fit both a Petzl and Grivel axe. Using real covers, while traveling is worth the money, compared to some jury rigged junk.

Good, but...

This works well, although I wish there was a better/more secure way to attach it to my axe (BD Raven Pro). There have been a few times so far that the spike protector has popped off when the axe is bumped while attached to my backpack or in the trunk of the car. Glad I got it though! Definitely nicer than rigging cardboard, etc. up every time I take the axe somewhere.

Protects, but may pose issues with attachment

Does its job; fits with my Petzel Ride and Camp USA Corsa Nanotech, not loose, but not super well, esp. with the beveled spike in the Ride (there aren't much better solutions anyways). The strap offers enough friction for me to feel comfortable it will stay put, but it's too thick to loop through the handle in the Nanotech (the Ride doesn't have that option).
