Read the previous two online reviews, so had to add my 2 cents. Bought this lock in Anchorage at the REI, which happens to be the best store I've visited. Needed a lock that fit through the zipper pulls of my roll-on luggage. This lock works great. EASY to set the combo, use a ball point pen to push the bottom button in while setting your custom combination.

Cannot set combination

I bought this cable lock to bind 2 sets of zippers together on a piece of luggage to avoid using 2 of the shackle locks. But like the other reviewer said, the cable lock is difficult to use. I followed the instructions to set the combination and pushed in the button needed for setting the combination with a jumbo paper clip and moved all 3 dials to numbers that I wanted. However, when I got to the last number the paper clip fell out and the set button came loose (it's very difficult to keep the paper clip pressed in). As a result the combination that I wanted to set did not open the lock, nor did the default 000. I'm left with a cable lock that I cannot use, since I cannot open it with any combination. Can I return this to REI without the packaging? (It's very difficult to get to the cable lock through the packaging without first destroying the packaging). I will be returning the cable lock (without packaging) to REI. I highly recommend using the REI shackle locks as they are made of better quality material and the combination is very easy to set. I've bought 3 shackle locks already.

Traveled with this lock for 7 years and counting

I've backpacked in 6 continents with this lock over the last 7 years and it has held up well. I just returned from a 1 year trip in developing countries and near the end of the trip the numbers became difficult to turn at times, especially the top number. I figured it was from dirt that made its way into the lock, so I cleaned it with compressed air and am planning on setting out again with the lock. I am not sure if the design has somehow changed over the years to yield so many bad reviews, but by the picture it looks identical. I thought I'd provide some long term feedback since most reviewers on here did not get past setting the combination.

Great cable lock

I use two of these cable locks with a Pelican case that holds my camera equipment. A regular padlock doesn't work well with this case, and these cable locks are just about perfect. I found the locks very easy to set to my desired number. Just use a ballpoint pen to push in the button and you shouldn't have any problems. I have found that these cable locks are also very easy to use under normal conditions.

Bad Design

like some reviewers have pointed out it is hard to change the combination by holding down the pin. I help down the pin and change the combination and I must not have held it down hard enough because I can't open the lock anymore. The lock is useless now.

Just A Good Simple Cable Lock

This is a gem of a cable lock, simple to use, versatile, and sturdy. Setting up the combination is really straight forward using a ballpoint pen or pencil. It's great for everyday use at work or with gym lockers. It's also perfect for securing checked baggage zippers.

Poor design

I purchased this lock but due to poor design I was unable to reset the code and it was permanently locked shut. I quickly returned this to the store for a full refund.

Too difficult to use

I got this for an extended trip to several countries. This lock, although the cable feature fits various pack/duffle/bag zippers, is very difficult to use. The dials are extremly difficult to see and align properly so the lock will open. We had another brand of cable lock that worked quite a bit better. The REI solid shackle one did work beautifuly and I do recommend that one.

Hard to read numbers

I found it very difficult to see the numbers on this lock. It is not as this picture shows, there's no black coloring on the numbers, so it's difficult to tell what the numbers are especially in low light. Also the way it locks is non-standard and doesn't seem strong to me...
