I take it backpacking with my dog. Plenty of room for the two of us and gear. I'm a big guy (6'3") and I sleep on a coleman cot. The dog has a huge pillow - everything fits. Tent is simple to assemble and holds up in the wind. It sheds rain really well and I like the roof vent design. Lots of pockets and an attick - great design. Its perfect if the temps stay above 40 F. The mosquito netting is great for keeping the weight down but it doesn't keep much of a warm air bubble around you (the fly definitely helps but even still...) Also, while two people could fit inside it would be cozy and no room for gear (except in the vestibules) - two doors help with access.
I purchased this tent because of the positive review that I had read. I took it out this weekend and camp out next to the river. The temp. dropped down to the low 40s and the wind was blowing 20 to 25 mph gusts, we stayed warm all night, so much so that I kept kicking off my sleeping bag. The tent is easy to set up and easy to take down. The tent alone without the rain fly is feather light, you can pick it up with one finger. I own other tents so I tend to be a little nit picky, I had no complaint, the tent is well made and well put together. The tent is so nice that we had a Tarantula nest beneath it and would not leave, no matter how far I would move the Tarantula it would always come back to the tent. I would highly recommend this product and I am not one who recommends very many things to anyone.
We got this tent as a wedding gift, and it has served us well. I am 6'5" and this was one of the only backpacking tents that fit me. The tent itself goes up in about 90 seconds, rainfly take a bit more work. I love the double vestibule area, with plenty of room for gear and a puppy. Has help up in rough wind and rain. Use those guy lines! Tent packs up great, and is lightweight, considering it's dimensions. We have added to our family, so it does not get used as much for camping (unless I go solo), but the rainfly footprint option is still awesome for shade for the little ones/protecting gear.
I am nothing but pleased with this tent. It is extremely easy to set up and very fast, there is room for two people and all their stuff, and it keeps you warm and dry on wet, cold nights. I have been through a few torrential downpours in this tent and everything on the inside stayed dry. The gear loft is such a wonderful addition - I keep my headlamp right there, totally easy to find, along with anything else I don't/can't search for in the middle of the night. The vestibules are beyond large - I have been able to keep packs, boots, water bottles, and even set up a small clothes line all inside them. Having the extra space is a real help. Long story short, I recommend it to everyone and use it often!
i just took the half dome out to the Cloud Peak wilderness up in the Big Horns. LOVED the tent! Super easy to set up. The 1 pole design is nice The fly worked great. Handy little gear loft in the peak of the tent. Two vents in the roof work great. It was rainy the whole time we were out and I never had any condensation build up. It's not the absolute lightest thing i've ever packed but it's not bad at all. The stuff sack has compressions straps on it and it fit perfectly on the bottom of my pack that was already way too full!! lol I would recommend this for sure and actually bought mine after camping with a friend who had one. Obviously great for backpacking trips. Awesome for car camping. I've only had it out on one trip but after 3 days in it I still can't come up with anything that I really don't like. Especially for the price!
Have used this tent all summer camping around Japan. Whether camping on a lawn for a festival, or poaching a beach and pretending not to understand the "No Camping On Beach" signs, it's been a good cheap portable shelter. It withstood a 4 hour torrential downpour, and sat in an inch of water without letting a drop in. Goes up super easy and fast. The ONLY problem so far is the condensation/ventilation issue that others have also pointed out, and it's a killer. This tent doesn't breathe very well, so there are comfort issues. Your choices seem to be sleep in the warm damp, or get destroyed by mosquitoes.
This tent is great, especially for the price. I've taken it on several multi-day backpacking trips in the Sierras and it hasn't let me down yet. On one of our trips we were caught in an unexpected snowstorm and the tent still managed to keep us comfortable. Every few hours or so we'd have to shake the tent to free snow from the ceiling, but it held up great considering it's only a three season tent. It's quite roomy for one person, but also accommodates two people comfortably. I also like that it comes with a gear loft that most other brands sell separately. The only cons I can think of are that it's a bit on the heavy side and it takes up a lot of space in your pack when carrying it by yourself. I may end up buying the REI Ace SW 2 Tent as it is much lighter, but I can't really complain about the Half Dome 2HC when considering the price I paid for it.
I used this tent as my home for 3.5 months one summer and was amazed at how nice it is. Been through snow, heat (110 degrees), downpours, and even 70mph wind gusts and it provided shelter without worry. I recommend this tent for anyone that wants their money worth. I only have one complaint, but it's small, there isn't much room if you are over 6 foot tall. I'm 6'3 and sleep in it diagonally so that I can have enough room and not pressed up against the sides. I continue to use this tent and will continue until it's no more. It's a permanent feature on my camping trips. Home away from home!
All in all, easy setup; 4min with footprint! I have owned a few REI tents throught the years, usually the bigger 4-6 person ones, but have decided to drop down to this size for a upcoming Solo Thru-Hike. The weight is a bit heavy, but I compensated that with a lighter pack, so no problem there. I tested this out last night with 25 mph winds and snow and it held up without a problem. I would just suggest that if you are planning on running into any windy conditions that you purchase some more stakes and guyline to really secure this puppy down (they don't supply enough for the guylines they include). Absolutely no problem with ventalation, air circulation was fantastic.
I have been using my tent for some 5 years. There is no sign of wear. I have used it in all types of weather: heavy rain, snow fall, desert heat. It is very comfortable and the attic storage and side wall storage are much appreciated, help to keep things located and organized. I really appreciate the side doors. Easy access.
