Not impressed
What I wrote for Goodreads: Well written and all, but it left me feeling dissatisfied. The first section, up until Bill and Stephen break from the trail, holds together well, but the mid section and conclusion never regain focus. Bryson dabbles at the trail by himself then picks it up again with Katz, but his heart isn't in it anymore. By this point they've skipped enough that even if they make Katadyn they won't have completed the thru-hike. It becomes a matter of "why bother?", and so they quit the trail.
A dose of reality with a lot of laughter
This book was laugh out loud funny. It also offered a healthy reality check for those of us who occassionally fantasize about taking a life sabatical and doing the AT. Maybe I will just live this one vicariously...
A really funny story!
This travel book is a good tale about climbing hills, leaving a few select tracks, and how 'beyond complicated' hiking really can be. It'll make you think twice about walking, but how with a good planning sense and a little humor, you'll still go far. Bryson's style is historical - what you should know (in retrospect) when taking a walk - and thoughtfully written.
Fun
One of my favorite books....I have reread a couple of times. Fun to escape everyday life and it is laugh out loud funny in some parts.
Great read
Bought as a point of sale. Was very entertaining. Has it's own place on the shelf for future re-reads which will happen.
Bill Bryson is the best
I love this book and the author. He always knows how to describe situations with slite humor and much detail.
Bryson is wonderful
