Excellent Thread
I bought a roll of this four years ago, and I am happy to see that REI still carries it. This is a twisted polyester thread that comes heavily waxed. It is a pleasing, natural tawny color, and looks like more like twisted sinew than most of the stuff that is now marketed as artificial sinew. It is heavier than button and carpet thread, but not as thick as most of the threads produced specifically for sewing leather. It should be perfect for making moccasins. It is not stretchy, like nylon, and it is incredibly strong. The wax that has been applied to it makes it stiffer and less likely to tangle than unwaxed thread, and the wax also helps hold the stitching and knots tight. I have never liked the stitching awls, but prefer a regular awl and harness needles for heavy leather, glovers needles for thin leather, and sailmakers needles for canvas. If you do any canvas or leatherwork or repair your own gear, I would recommend a roll of this for your kit.
