Expedition-worthy workhorse!
I put these skis through an ultimate stress test on a month-long expedition in Baffin Island’s demanding Arctic terrain. I rely on gear that can handle extremes, and these skis exceeded every expectation. From the first day hauling a 180 pound sled across frozen fjords to navigating tricky approaches beneath towering granite walls, the BC 85s were a reliable partner. In total I covered over 200km+ of frozen sea ice, lake ice and snowfields and was grateful for the balance of performance and weight. I was zipping along compared to my travel companions who had much heavier and bulkier setups. The balance of width and stability gave me confidence over the unpredictable snowpack, while still being light enough for long, grinding days of travel. The positrack base was a game changer for scouting missions where it provided consistent grip on rolling terrain without the hassle of skins, yet still gliding efficiently when the surface firmed up. I used the pre-cut skins that are cut-to-size for days when hauling heavy sleds for extra grip and kicking ability with no slip, even on steep ice chunks and hummocks. Durability is often the make-or-break factor in Arctic expeditions, and the BC 85s held up flawlessly against ice, rock, and weeks of abuse. Even after endless transitions between wind-blasted hardpack and soft drifts, the skis retained their edge and responsiveness. What impressed me most was how trustworthy they felt. In an environment where gear failure isn’t an option, these skis gave me the confidence to focus on the climbing objectives ahead, not whether my travel setup could keep up, even when wading through knee-deep surface water and balancing over ice crack leads. These skis are an expedition-ready workhorse for anyone looking for a ski that can handle big mileage, heavy hauling, and unforgiving conditions that also benefits from being lightweight. I can’t recommend them highly enough for skiing out your cabin for a day stroll or for 30km+ days of hauling in the arctic.
