After 5 days of using this pack in Wyoming for backpacking and multi-pitch climbing, I'm stoked on how this pack worked out! The backpack handled loads of 30 pounds without trouble, and stripped down for climbing with ease. It's just the perfect shape for carrying gear in my eyes. The frame sheet is a clear step forward from previous packs in low weight and sturdy construction. I also really liked the interior zip pocket and the fabric that shed rain and hail without issue. If I could change one thing, I would lower the chest strap, because it still sits a little high. Overall, crushed it BD!
Black Diamond's Speed Packs provide everything I need and appreciate in a trad pack without any unnecessary fluff 'n' stuff added. I'm a tall man with a short torso, and the smaller size sits nicely, even while wearing a harness and climbing multipitch routes. The pack also carries a rope nicely, with five compression straps keeping it in place. While I haven't used this pack for skiing, I can strongly recommend it for all-day climbing adventures.
I bought this pack intending to use it for mountaineering, rock climbing and over night hikes in the Grand Canyon. I was concerned about durability and how the pack would feel fully loaded. All concerns are over for this pack. The speed 30 has been incredible in all weather 100° to 20° fully loaded over loaded and with hardly anything in it. I like how it feels with or without the lid. Holds all my gear perfectly. This will be a hard pack to beat.
Fantastic pack that has all the climbing-specific bells and whistles you could want despite being very light. The hip belt is also surprisingly comfortable given the weight. The 30 liter size can serve as an on-route pack and/or an ultralight pack for an overnighter.
Simple and well designed. I really like having the ability to remove the lid and strip the pack down. Everything you need is there without extra fluff. The Speed 30's versatility and simplicity is its greatest asset.
Does the job and i look amazing while i'm at it. But the devil is jn the detail, if you are gonna put some extras at least do it right! The attachments in the hipbelt looks so bad, so low quality!
The pack is less durable than expected. Got holes on the bottom really fast. The pack fits everything I need for day of climbing very well besides the packs durability.
Like my larger BD pack, this thing is a bucket. It fits a ton of gear, but doesn’t wear like a big, heavy pack. Feels good in the hips, and distributes weight well.
Bag is lightweight but also has room for ice axes and crampons. Great gear to make a quick summit.
The size is perfect for a night or two climbing the Grand Teton or used as a day pack!
