Mountain Hardwear  Mineral King 3 All Season Tent with Footprint

I just took this tent on an 11 day Tatshenshini/Alsek river trip through Canada and Alaska. It powered through 30mph wind and 48 hours of continuous rain. The trango material feels super burly which makes me feel a lot better about the cost. Guy out points are great with Velcro straps on the inside to wrap around the poles which provides amazing stabilization in wind. The rain fly never leaked, the seams are sealed, 10/10 water protection. I love the floor print design that tucks in under the tent pole connections. The tent poles themselves feel premium and you can tell they can take some serious abuse. Overall I give this tent 4.5 stars because of three minor inconveniences. The door zippers are terrible. They don’t glide and feel like they get stuck every few inches. I can’t tell if this is by design to be extra tight/hard to zip for storm protection. The second inconvenience is the design of the top horizontal short pole. It doesn’t have a way to connect to the main 4 way pole system. You have to weasel out of the tent or the pole scrapes against your back. You can’t pee standing from inside your tent (which is not a design defect but I like to do it). Lastly I wish there was a vent on the top of the tent. The two vestibule door vents are small and I feel like adding one more that you can open up during condensation nights would be sweet. Overall this tent is PERFECT for what it is designed to be - an all season workhorse. When you set this up you immediately know it will keep you alive through some serious storms. Not very many 4 season tents have two doors and two entrance vestibule. Very happy with this purchase and have recommended it to a lot of friends who need a specific use case: a 4 season type tent that isn’t designed to be used in high elevation snowy conditions. If you’re planning a windy rain-fest low elevation expedition where comfort matters more than weight this is your tent!

I used the Mineral King 3 All-Season during a March trip to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and later on the Minnesota North Shore. It handled snow load exceptionally well, stayed noticeably warmer inside overnight, and the adjustable walls made it easy to regulate temperature. The vestibule under the rain fly was perfect for keeping extra gear out of the weather. It fills every need for an extended-stay winter shelter and for colder lightweight excursions.

I have had the summer version for many years and love it. It is my favorite tent, but i have known for years that a tent that has cloth walls cuts about 10 degrees from the outside temperature because i have the mountain hardware hammerhead that closes up. It is worn out. I was so happy to find this tent. I thought that because it was closed up, it would only be used in the winter. But when i set it up and saw the cloth doors that can be opened to mesh, i realized that it can truly be all seasons. It also answered my question about preventing the condensation of a single wall tent.

I have not given tent a real field test yet, but I have set it up when it was delivered. Tent comes in a very compact storage bag and easy to get it back in storage back after setting up. Very quick and easy to set up by one person. Good that it comes with footprint. Tent is very spacious inside and seems well thought out in design (i.e. ease of opening/closing doors and screen doors, tie-backs for doors and screens, numerous storage pockets inside tent, hooks and clothes lines on ceiling of tent for hanging things). Looking forward to field testing. I did have a problem with my REI order in that the wrong model tent was sent to me originally. It appears the tag was wrong on the tent storage bag, did not match the tent inside the bag which was not the tent I ordered. I called REI right away and they arranged to have the right tent sent to me and emailed return paperwork so I could send the wrong tent back, no charge. I did not have to wait for REI to receive the wrong tent back before they sent out the replacement. The replacement tent arrived very quick, three days, which was faster then the original shipment which was also quick, 1 week. REI staff on the phone very pleasant and accommodating throughout the exchange process, only one short phone call.

My favorite tent that MHW has made! Love the fact you can close the doors but unzip the fabric door while the mesh door stays zipped. This creates for a ton of breathability and privacy without needing the flysheet on during summer nights. Perfect all season tent, makes enough air flow for those warm nights to keeping the warmer air insulated during cold fall nights. Have not tested it in the rain but waterproofness has always been great on my MHW Tents. Guy out your tent and it will be secure and stable for those windy days too! Great tent all around
