You can tell when a product was designed by someone who partakes in the activity, and this is one of those products! After using this pack on an overnight backpacking trip in southeastern PA, I can confidently say this is a well-designed pack with thoughtful attention to detail. Here are some of this pack’s highlights: - It is simultaneously very lightweight and nicely padded. The shoulder straps and hip belt, in particular, provided a welcome level of padding without feeling disconnected from the pack. - I am all about easy access to my camera (phone) and chapstick, and the pockets on the hip belt are generously sized. I could also see this being a great spot for keeping a passport handy if you’re taking this pack internationally. - As someone who usually brings a packable daypack for multi-day backpacking trips, this may be my favorite feature: the brain of the pack is detachable and has straps that convert it into a daypack. Bye bye extra daypack in my backpacking pack! - Another thoughtful feature I appreciated is that there is a (removable) divider in the main compartment. I really loved this feature to help maintain a little order in the otherwise wide open space. - The rain cover is included and easy to access. It was nice to not have one more thing to purchase/remember to pack. - I like to be prepared, so I like that there is a whistle built in to the chest clip. - There is an internal sleeve for my hydration bladder and the hydration pack tube clip along the chest strap kept it close by and easy to use - While I don’t anticipate sharing this pack as regularly as I share my kid-carrying pack, I appreciate that the height is adjustable - there are so many strap options for strapping in tents/heavy things, and they are so nicely integrated into the pack! And a few features that I was less into, but by no means are dealbreakers: - The high water bottle side pockets meant my water bottle never fell out, but my water bottle was also nearly impossible to take out while hiking without taking my pack off. I had a hydration bladder, so it was fine, - Make sure you tuck the daypack straps fully away in the brain. I went to tighten the pack - pull the weight closer to me and a few times reached over my shoulders and pulled the daypack straps out instead and had to stop to shove them back on - The brain of the pack isn’t attached to the body of the pack at a center point, just the corners. This is entirely personal preference and doesn’t impede the function of the pack, but my old pack had the brain attach at a center point as well, and I missed that. The brain just falls further down when I open it than I was used to. Overall, I loved this pack and really appreciated that I could tell it was designed by someone who backpacks!
This backpack is a solid option when considering a larger capacity pack for medium-length trips. I typically use a 48 liter pack and am glad to have this 60 liter pack for when I need more carrying capacity. The material has proven durable in the first few weeks of use, and the pack sits comfortably on my hips. Because of my short torso, I've struggled in the past with packs putting too much weight on my shoulders; this S-M size (rated for 16-19 inch torsos) has worked well for 5'7" frame. One really neat feature is the detachable brain, which has additional shoulder straps and can be used as a light daypack. I often wish for a smaller pack on short jaunts from camp; this fits the bill well. It might not have enough storage space for a summit push (for example, on a 14er), but it does have two compartments, making it more functional than you'd expect. The pack as a whole has plenty of compartments and storage space; I appreciate the wide hip belt pockets, which comfortably hold my phone, sunscreen, snacks, etc. Unlike with other packs I've used, these pockets can accommodate these slightly-larger items. My only slight complaint is that there are perhaps TOO many adjustable straps! If everything is not well cinched down, the straps can flap around. Otherwise, this has been a really solid pack option!
Overall, the pack is definitely a very solid entry-level backpacking bag that’s great for someone looking to get into multi-day trips especially with a larger capacity (60L). The additional front mesh and side pockets (including separate water bottle pockets) allows for more storage beyond the interior capacity which is a huge plus! I enjoyed having this as an option for multi-day backpacking trips or longer day hikes. Pros: - Has a lot of the key features (adjustable torso, fair amount of pockets/loops for poles) and included rainfly (although I wouldn’t always carry) - Additional side water bottle pockets that is easily reachable while hiking (great for those who don’t use hydration bladders or for carrying additional drinks) - Hip pocket was able to fit my phone (iPhone X!) for easy access Cons: - Padding is substantial but definitely started feeling the fit was uncomfortable when fully loaded (usually a XS/S and 5’3”, max torso 18”) - Top pocket to backpack conversion is a great concept with even multiple pockets but the convertible backpack also wasn’t the most comfortable but would work in a pinch for a shorter day hike instead of the full pack
This was a gift for my mom! We scored havasupai tickets this year and she hasn’t been back down there since the big flood in 2008 nor has she backpacked so her gear was a little outdated. She was eyeing this for awhile so I purchased it for her she absolutely loves it and is so excited to take it out! It is far more light weight than her previous pack and the women’s fit is much more comfortable she’s on the taller side so has always worn men’s but this pack was able to adjust to fit her torso length and comes with all the bells and whistles you might find on a osprey or Gregory!
it's hard to describe but the new torso adjustment (to lengthen and shorten) is not as secure as the old school Velcro and I've noticed mine wants to constantly slide out of place. I love the pockets and organization of this pack but sadly the torso movement has caused significant pain. For reference I am a long distance hiker, 60 miles in 5 days type stuff and have had no issues with a $100 75 liter pack over those distances, but this pack is hit or miss, sometimes it's fine and other times it's like I put it on and you can see the adjustment strap has slid from the position I set it to and it will be sitting on my shoulders crooked. I really wanted to like this pack but I'll have to give it one more test run (4th time's the charm?) and if it is still causing issues I'm returning it. Is this a factory defect in mine? I know this is a new design so maybe mine is faulty? I'm so sad because the pockets and loading/organization is so good, better than my other packs by far, but it's the least comfortable compared to my 55 L, 42L, and 75L (all three from different brands). very bummed about this
My partner and I got these packs as beginner backpackers. It is on the heavier side at over 4 lbs, but it has a lot of great compartments and pockets. Some people find this frivolous, but if you enjoy comfort over ultra light, I feel like this is a great pack. Has a lot of easy adjustments and the removable day pack sold us. At times even with 30+ lbs in I forget i'm wearing a pack. If this is your first pack I HIGHLY recommend going in store to get fitted. REI staff are extremely helpful and knowledgable, and I would not have purchased this correctly if I hadn't gotten informed on what size and adjustments I needed. Only things I DON'T LIKE: I find the water bottle pocket difficult to access, and if the button isn't clipped (making it even more hard to get a bottle back in without stopping) my bottle has fallen out a few times. It is, of course, a heavier pack and you may need to cut on weight in other areas or just send it with a 35-40lb pack like I do.
I bought this pack as my first backpacking pack. Big selling points for me were the sleeping compartment in the bottom and the detachable daypack (brain). It's been super easy to use and easy to pack. Having all of the little pockets and sleeves has been great for keeping things organized, even if I don't have pouches for smaller items. It's not the lightest pack, but it's comparable to most Gregory and Osprey packs in the same capacity range.
I haven’t used the backpack yet, but like all the pockets and features, including rain cover and detachable daypack. I bought the XS/S bc I’m 4’10 and it fits perfectly. Rests comfortably on my hips and chest strap is in the correct place. There are lots of adjustable straps so as the contents change over my 3 week trek, I can adjust the fit.
