Hood shaped airbag and intuitive storage

Used for backcountry splitboarding in Washington State and Alaska Pros: Hood shaped airbag felt more protective and air pocket forming than a pillow shape. Intuitive avy gear, accessory and snack storage, easy canister refilling and attachment, ice axe loop felt secure Con: deployment zipper runs a bit unless you’re really good at packing the bag, which takes a couple practice runs to perfect

Great bag!

This bag has been amazing, Still trying to perfect the organization of my gear. The Protection airbag is a great upgrade over a traditional airbag. The avalanche safety pocket is perfectly sized for shovel probe and great to have. my only two gripes is not having an internally routed shoulder strap for a radio but running it out the hydration hole and under the strap has been a non issue. my other small gripe is I was hoping buying the protection version vs the RAS would move the airbag more into the shoulders and make more room for storage in the pack but it seems I was wrong. Still a lot of usable room. hoping I can get my hands on a carbon canister to free up some space.

3rd Mammut bag over the last 3 years

I now have the small medium and now this larger bag. The small is perfect for Heli. Medium is perfect for day trips. The big is perfect if your going on multi days. OR if like me getting into guiding and need to carry an emergency sled and supplies. Super stoked to finally have the biggest one they make. Plus one of the biggest reasons people don't wear a bag is because of trauma during a slide. It's DAMN hard to say this won't only give you better protection but also floatation. Get educated don't put yourself in a position where you need to use it, but great to have.

The ultimate

I've been really blown away with the features and quality of this airbag pack. The pack skis super well and it nicely featured. Of course, the main draw of this air bag is the protective shape of the bag to mitigate avi trauma. This in itself sets Mammut Protection airbags apart from the pack. I'll be on my second season with this bag and have been super happy with it thus far. It is also well designed in terms of organization, helmet storage, goggle pocket and of course a dedicated rescue compartment. Really looking forward to another season with this bag.

Thankfully, I haven't had to test drive the airbag, but the pack itself is fantastic. Great features, definitely spacious, and it carries a load really nicely. I'm a consummate over packer, especially for cold backcountry days, but this thing loads it in and cinches in all the right places to not feel like the weight is pulling you over on the descent. The ski carry mode is slightly awkward, but no worse than any others. I love the goggle pouch and the back panel access. The whole thing is just well thought out.

Beacon Probe Shovel AIRBAG

I watched my friends get swept away in a terrifying avalanche, one of them deployed his mammut pro protection airbag and came to rest on the surface unharmed. Because of this he was able to rapidly dig out another friend who was buried upside down. This airbag saved two lives that day. I will never go into the backcountry without an airbag, and the shape of the protection airbag truly makes it the best option.

solid choice for avy airbags

The 45 L compacts nicely and is the minimum size I would use for a day pack in avy terrain. It is a bit on the heavy side but is well designed and quite comfortable. It has good pockets and fits everything I need for a large day out. Would get a 20 L ish if just doing slack country from a resort and don't need much extra other than spot for a layer or two and probe and shovel.

Fully featured and super comfy

Got a 35l version, runs longer and narrower so it sits really well on the back and provides enough space for movement. There is really nothing to complain about here. Opening from the back, separate safety pocket, huge goggle pocket, waist pocket for sugary snacks:-), feels heavier - but when you put it on its just right, lots of !smart! attachments. Love it.

Great bag

I really like this bag. The design is great, with the right compartments, and it fits well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is for the size. Just like most air bags, a lot of space is taken up by the airbag mechanism. I wish I could have put my hands on a 45L, instead of a 35L. But yeah, very functional, I'm happy with it.

Great pack for touring!

I really like this pack for touring, whether a short or long day out it works great. Outside of the obvious safety feature, the pack allows you to bring everything you need for a long day out touring with the rear access hatch being super convenient. The goggle pouch is thoughtfully done where it doesn't feel like I have to force my goggles in and am able to store a couple other items in the same pouch. My only knock (keeping it from a 10) is that the setup for a bladder isn't ideal. It wasn't clear where to hang it and the place that is designated to hang it causes the back flap to be kind of unwieldy when you open it. Also, the side access for the tube is a somewhat awkward position as it ends up coming out below the armpit and doesn't seem designed to put it over the shoulder. Otherwise this pack is awesome! I did have an issue with the airbag system needle that engages the canister broke after my first test but Mammut very quickly replaced the system for me.
