In a word: Versatile.
I have been a dedicated Yakima rack user for many years and initially intended to install the SlimShady awning. While permanently mounted awnings look slick and are instantly deployable, you have to factor the awning into how you park. The Sand Wash Car Tarp offers so much more versatility, responding easily to the direction of my vehicle, the elements, and available space. My truck happens to have a pair of crossbars over the cab and another pair on the camper shell. I can mount it on either set of bars, and on either the passenger or driver's side. I can even mount it on the rearmost crossbar and over the tailgate. Similarly, it is easily tossed into my wife's car at a moment's notice when it makes sense to take her car. I could see the extended flap being useful against blowing rain or angled against the late afternoon sun. However, I purchased two lightweight extendable poles from another online retailer to hold up the extended flap, which offered a massive amount of additional shaded real estate. If you are handy with tarp set up and tying guy lines, this tarp could also be used free standing, provided you have proper supports and guy lines for each of the corners. Its removability also means that I don't have to worry about theft or mother nature damaging it when not in use. My only quibbles: the shockcorded tent poles which create the raised dome go in easily enough, but as all shock cords deteriorate and become slack, care must be taken to PUSH the poles out when disassembling rather than pulling them out. Additionally, the aluminum tent stakes are trash. Buy some extras to have on hand for when you inevitably bend them. I can't say enough good things about the Big Agnes Sand Wash Car Tarp. Easily one of my favorite car camping gear purchases this year. We look forward to using it for years to come.
Truck camper
We used this tarp off the back of our truck camper and it worked perfectly. It provides so much coverage in sunny or rainy weather. I was worried it would not be tall enough but for anyone thinking about this on a taller vehicle/camper, it works.
