Tesla Model Y - Perfect Fit
It fits perfectly on the Tesla crossbars for the Model Y, even if you can't find written confirmation anywhere. You have to adjust the trunk travel setting about 1 inch down but that takes 2 seconds.
Bigger Is Better
Like most people, I did a lot of research when looking at roof boxes for my Honda Odyssey. I concluded that any brand REI carries would be a good choice, but chose the Thule over the Yakima based on overall capacity and ease of attachment. The Thule Motion has within it 4 'claw knobs' that adjust to your rack setup fast and open and close very easily. The box opens on either side, which was very helpful when attaching and loading it. An employee at REI suggested mounting the box on the passenger side of the van to make access easier, which it was. Pushing it to the middle will just make your life more difficult, even if it looks better. I stuck a motion-activated light from the dollar store inside the box for a little bit of light; it works great and I didn't need to pay for the pricey Thule-branded one. We wound up driving this box 1,200 miles—600 of them through a Nor'Easter. There was a little bit of water in the box when we opened it, but it was funneled down to the bottom channels of the box and the contents were dry, minus the one or two little things that were smushed down into the channel. The inner tie-down straps are OK, but I found bungee cords were easier to use. I also saw some comments about wind noise from the box in other reviews, but I didn't detect any additional noise during the 16+ hours of highway driving we did with it. Some Cons: Your gas mileage will take a hit. Typical highway mileage on my van is 30 MPG, and we averaged 24 MPG on the trip. However, we were driving into headwinds as well. I'm not really concerned with MPG on a once-a-year trip, but some people are. The XXL is LARGE. You will need an extra set of hands to move it around, and it does take up a lot of space in storage. It's not heavy, but it can be awkward to move around given its dimensions. Unless you are 6' 5" you will need a ladder to load and unload it when mounted. Overall, I'm very happy with the XXL and I'm glad I chose the largest box. I can't imagine going smaller having used it on a real road trip. It holds plenty and freed up a lot of room in the cabin which is essential for such a long trip. It's also attractive for what it is. Pickup and install at the store was also great; they disposed of the humungous box that it comes it, and all of the wrapping/packing material, and all of the REI guys had some good tips regarding keys/storage/usage.
Excellent product
Purchased for use during upcoming move as well as for ski season in Utah. Shipped easily. Arrived in new/protected condition. Easy install on Honda Passport 2020 EX-L (see attached photos). Good open/close locking mechanism. Lots of internal space. Wouldn’t want anything else in a roof carrier.
Perfect. You get what you pay for.
Perfect, fits all the stuff we don’t need 😂 and makes room for the kiddos in the car. Very little to no noise on the highway at speed and the fact you can open from both sides is necessary. Happy with our purchase.
Couldn't be happier!
We were looking for a large roof box and the Thule Motion 3 XXL did not disappoint! We needed a cargo box to hold most if not all of our belongings to free up space in our vehicle for 5 passengers a two large dogs. This cargo box did the trick! It's super easy to install and remove using the PowerClick quick mount system. I highly recommend this cargo box. You will not be disappointed!
Boondocking made easy and cozy
This box has served us so well. It really does hold a family of four set up for tent camping with our dog. We went from Texas to the Canadian border boondocking through national forest land. And we were amazingly comfortable thanks to what the Motion 3 roof Box XXL allowed us to bring. Plus, the box lent itself to keeping its contents organized.
Glued foam packaging difficult to remove
The box is okay (a little flimsy) but the packaging materials are glued to the box on arrival and require special treatment to remove. Thule gives the following instructions to remove their packaging materials from the box. "To remove adhesive foam from ABS plastic, try using a non-damaging method first, like rubbing alcohol or a mixture of warm water, dish soap, and white vinegar to soften the adhesive. For tougher residue, apply a paste of baking soda and oil or a specialized product like Goo Gone. Apply the solution, let it soak, and then gently scrape off the softened foam and residue with a plastic scraper or credit card, followed by cleaning the area with a cloth." This is unexpected and seems like a hassle.
Great option for small footprint/ large storage
This model is a great option for people who want something that has more space than your average roofbox, but still feels and looks smaller. Thule has been super efficient with their design, and even leaves little space between the box and your car for minimized drag. It's super easy to install, and can be oriented from either side of the vehicle. The only con (of an overall smart buy) is that sometimes the lid can be a bit sticky when opening. Apart from that, one of their best yet!
Fits EVERYTHING!
I enjoy the capacity that the box has and it's ease of mounting. As we use this primarily for Nordic skiing, I wish there was an option for a box this long but not so wide as some older Thule models were. This box is great for hauling everything but it does come at the cost of additional roof space and bike racks
buyer beware
REI will over promise and under deliver. Been eating on my Thule package after being told it was not able to be canceled. Do not buy with REI buy elsewhere. You will have a terrible experience. Was even told I would be getting a refund for shipping company can’t keep their word.
