Mammut Trion spine 50

Amazing bag with tons of room to pack away gear or bring that extra warm layer when out ski touring. A few more organizing pockets or an actual dedicated avalanche gear pocket (with sheaths/organizing fabric for probe and shovel) would make this bag amazing. The inside fabric is also a bit weak, while trying find a good place for my Shovel blade I put it in a spot that wore a hole through after a fairly short walk. Otherwise backpack is great keeps the weight on your hips and you hardly notice it on your back. Bag also packs down quite nicely when you have less gear and never has felt cumbersome while skiing.

Best Backpacking Setup

I went on a backpacking trip to Havasupai, AZ this last June and I spent months researching the best backpack for the trip before landing on this one. The quality of the build, the streamlined functionality, and the overall function of the backpack blew me away. It was everything I needed for a successful backpacking trip and more. The waterproofed exterior came in handy as we faced multiple downpours during the trip, and the available adjustment points allowed me to adjust the pack to the perfect height as well as distribute the pack load evenly on my back. I couldn't recommend this pack enough.

The pack takes abit of adjustment to get familiar with, the way the hipbelt moves is quite different to most packs. Carries weight quite well but is a poor choice for those fast and light days as the pack is quite heavy by itself. The front opening compartment is great for getting to all your gear without repacking More of a nuisance than and issue, but the way the active spine system pivots tends to create a super annoying squeak with each step. Will try getting a dry lubricant into the moving parts which should hopefully stop it. Not very often you have to lubricate your backpack

Great pack. Have used for ski tours and alpine climbing expeditions over multiple nights. I wish it had diagonal ski carry but the A frame works great.

Great storage and weight distribution

The 50L is great if you need to pack mountaineering gear or a multi-day tour. I got it for medium-long touring days and it's a bit much for average weather conditions but will say it's been clutch on some gnarly storm days where you want to go prepared for a full day. One thing I'd say is the weight distribution is incredible. Took it fully loaded in the Chic Chocs and didn't feel that much heavier than a 30L on the way up, minimally affected the ride on the way down. Like everything from MAMMUT it's just a really well made product and very thought through.

Overall Excellent Pack

The Trion Spine 50 is exactly what i was looking for. Not the kind of pack with endless pockets and molly but just a nice large space that can carry more than I need for camping or a long hike. It allows enough room for my things as well as my full size DJI Mavik Pro some spare batteries, controller ipad mini and go pro in small pelican case. The zippers are quality and the fabric has a very durable feel and still looks as good as the day I bought it.

Great Pack with a couple weaknesses

I've used this pack for weekend overnighters, ski touring (including a four day hut trip), mountaineering, and scrambling. I am very happy with the functionality of the pack. However, I have two main complaints: 1. The spine mechanism is very noisy - depending on how full the pack is it will squeak with every step. 2. The Velcro in the Ice tool carry system is terrible. Otherwise, the pack is well built. The Spine system works well for active sports.

Bagging 14ers in October

Just put this pack through its paces. A four day trip into Chicago basin in the San Juan National forest outside of Durango gave me a chance to test my new Trion Spine. As we all know, not all 50l bags are created equal. This one packs and carries more like a 60l. I had no trouble with space for food, clothing, and tent required to support four days with two days of peak bagging and possible winter storms. On the day we climbed north eolus (14,089ft)) there were a few sections of easy class 5 climbing (like 5.nothing) that made route finding easier. I had no trouble busting a few moves with the pack on because of how well it moved with me. On our last day we awoke to four inches of snow and the contents of the pack were dry as a bone. This pack is well designed, well constructed, carries well and was easy to adjust to my shorter frame. BIG FAN!

The most comfortable pack I've ever owned

They need to make more packs like this, with the active spine suspension. I recently picked up this pack for winter mountaineering and SAR activities. My pack was very heavy and I thought I was going to need rescuing myself on my snowshoe, but as soon as I cinched the hipbelt, I felt like I was walking without a pack. Incredible. I also love that it has the giant U-shaped opening in front. I can throw my pack on the ground and open the whole thing when I need to find something quick. Super thoughtful sewn-in velcro to organize loose strap webbing. The reason I knocked it down a star is because I wish there were better organization. The top lid only has on zippered compartment on top; it would be nice to have one underneath as well. There are no side pockets to stash water bottles, just straps to hold skis/equipment. Bottom line: I highly recommend this pack.

Solid mountaineering and climbing pack

The pack is comfortable and the design makes it easy to get to most gear. The smaller zip pocket would be improved I'd you could get to it without risking gear falling out of the main compartment. Additionally, the Velcro gear loops should be permanently attached. Almost lost them twice already whilst ice climbing.
