Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Hi! This is a review from a trail runner who prefers ground feel and minimal stack height! I've also completed several trail ultras and marathons (trail and road) in minimal footwear. I wanted to see how this particular max cushion, high stack zero drop shoe would perform and provide comfort given an injured left heal. I have also worked in run specialty shops. I was so happy to be selected to test the Altra Olympus 6 with my particular preferences. I gave this model 5-Stars because I would and will absolutely continue to rotate this model on training runs. Especially on buffed trails, for hill repeats, hikes and any time I'm feeling like I want a bit more cushion than I prefer. I would recommend this model over other high stack, max cushion models/brands bc of its responsiveness. Sizing and On Foot Feel: I requested a size 8. I am still torn if I would have felt even more secure and comfortable in a 7.5. Regardless of that, I love how they feel around the midfoot, feel secure. I just would like to get them a little more snug around the midfoot, hence why I think a 7.5 would have been perfect. Of course, I love the ample toe box space, so my toes can fully splay, but at the same time not getting smashed into the front of the shoe when going downhill. I should also mention the heel feels pretty secure as well, not too tight, but not loose, either. Under Foot Feel and Performance: This shoe is responsive and not over the top bulky. The cushioning is comfortable without being too "squishy". I think that, not too squishy feel, helps reduce the perception of being on such a thick stack. Which I was concerned about b/c I though I'd feel "wobbly" or have a sensation of slipping off the foot-bed. I didn't get that sensation, and that was a big positive! Activities I Tested the Olympus with: Walks with the dog, hikes, runs, hill repeats, and even a morning of race timing. Surface tested on; Trails that transition quickly between buffed and bEAST Coasty (rocks, roots, boulders). Hill repeats on a look out access road; transitions between asphalt and crushed stone surfaces. What I Enjoyed Most: I LOVED the performance of the shoes during hill repeats; security around mid-foot and the cushion for the downhill abuse on the soles of the feet. I will keep using them on those days. As well as for longer trail run days at a local nature preserve surrounded by miles and miles trails of every kind of surface. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Thank you Altra for giving me this free product to test and review. I've used em these at work and hiking. Did great in water. I love the new Olympus 6 for women.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been obsessed with Altra shoes for several years now, using the Lone Peaks as my preferred trail shoes. I was thrilled to be able to try out Altra's Olympus 6! These trail shoes had no break in period for me and were comfortable straight out of the box. They perform very similarly to my Lone Peaks with noticeably more cushion. They stay true to zero drop and wide toe box. Cons: 1. The loop to pull the heel of the shoe on is too small to fit a finger through, which seems counterproductive. 2. Personally, I think these shoes are pretty ugly to look at. I normally love the look of Altra shoes, but these ones took some getting used to! I feel like I'm wearing platforms and I don't care for the looks. Pros: In spite of the ugly design/colors, these trail shoes won me over entirely by being both practical and comfortable. They helped speed up my healing process for a tendinitis issue I was having with my foot. I put them to the test running dirt and gravel roads, smooth and rugged trails, gradual and steep terrain. They even felt great on the pavement! I put these shoes to the test during a training run up Mt Baldy in Bozeman, a brutal 4 miles up with 4,000 elevation gain on a rugged trail. I was extremely impressed with the traction of the soles, particularly on the downhill portions. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a reliable trail shoe that will be comfortable on the most extreme terrain. I also felt the cushion difference when running on flat dirt road. Altra once again didn't let me down! I've found my forever brand of running shoe, and I'm stoked to have a pair of Olympus' to add to my shoe options! Altra sent me these shoes for free to use and review.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This shoe is definitely meant for long times on the trail but also performs well for short hikes/trail runs too. It's a larger shoe in cushion and roominess. I found it almost too much cushion and too big. It took me about 1 hr to get the fit just right. Also on shorter trips I like to be able to feel the ground a little more than I did in this shoe. The lug depth and configuration allowed me to feel very confident whether going down wooden stairs s, scrambling up and over rocks or going down a steeper path. The shoe instilled confidence in my footing while on the trail.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been running in Altra trail shoes a long time - multiple versions of the Lone Peak (GoreTex version included), Mont Blanc and even tried earlier editions of the Olympus. This shoe is definitely goofy looking at first (although I was a big fan of the colors!) - wore them on a couple of dog walks first to make sure they fit well - and the staff at the local coffee shop complimented them and gave me the courage to carry on. :) Over the course of 2 weeks I ran them ~40 miles on trails and covered about 5k' of climbing over a variety of terrain - dusty trails, gravel, rock, sharp rocks, etc. They were comfy right out of the box and my standard size 9 fit just fine. They are cushy - you notice it just walking in it, but it didn't feel laggy or non-responsive on the trail. I did notice that I needed to be extra careful to pick up my feet - no lazy running as I scuffed a few rocks here and there, particularly on the downhills (and took my first somersault of the season). I also tried them on pavement, pushing the pace for 3 miles at the end of a long run to see how they held up (when I travel I like to bring my trail shoes, but frequently that means putting some miles in on the road). They surprised me - didn't feel too tacky or heavy and clocked 7:30 miles without a problem (solid for me!). The construction of this shoe is slightly different from other Altras-it has extra cushion in the heel cup, which felt nice. They put the soft stitch tongue back in this model (vs. the versions that feel like laser-cut vinyl). They used thick, quality grippy laces-there were no issues with them coming undone. Traction was top-notch on all surfaces. Ventilation was decent with a Smartwool trail sock. Here's the downside - on my 5th trail run with these I noticed some irritation on my ankle bones. I assumed it was the heel insert, but it turns out these shoes are cut about a half inch higher than other models near the ankle bone. After 7 miles my right ankle was rubbed raw and my left ankle felt bruised. A week later they still felt too tender to wear (but not a problem in other shoes). I did take them for an hour walk around the neighborhood tonight (two weeks later) and didn't notice the issue, so will be curious to rotate them back in and see how the foam holds up over time. I suspect if you are just using these for hiking, walking or even cross country running it might not ever be an issue. Full disclosure, I had the opportunity to product test the new Olympus 6 for free in exchange for my honest feedback.
New ankle padding that wraps around the inside of the shoe back ends right under the ankle bone. It's hard, and ends abruptly in a stiff edge, not carried further forward as in Olympus 5. I can feel it against my ankle while just walking indoors, can't imagine backpacking with them. Seems like asking for blisters. Will return.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] ALTRA gave me this free product to try, and try them I did! I used the Altra Olympus 6 extensively over the past 4 weeks for both trail running and backpacking. Specifically, I tested them on my daily trail runs on mostly even surfaced dirt and grass paths, in Frozen Head State Park (home to the infamous Barkley Marathons), and on a 20-mile section of the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee and North Carolina. The outsoles provide excellent grip on wet rocks, and the maximal cushioning significantly reduced impact by sharp rocks. The high stack height kept mud out during rainy sections, and the water-resistant upper was a bonus, although it sacrifices breathability, which led to discomfort, hotspots, and blisters for me in hot weather. The shoes fit true to size with Altra's signature foot-shaped last and roomy toe box, and worked great for my low-volume, flat feet. They are comfortable for extended use, especially noticeable during long backpacking trips where the cushioning prevents foot fatigue. However, I experienced hot spots around the ankles and heels, likely due to the heel cup design and short tongue. Design-wise, the shoes are aesthetically pleasing, though the off-white color shows dirt quickly. I recommend more color options that hide dirt better. The durability is impressive, with minimal wear despite rugged use. Improvements could include refining the heel cup design, lengthening the tongue, and slightly longer laces for those using the runner's loop technique. Overall, the Altra Olympus 6 shoes excel for long-distance trail runners and backpackers seeking comfort and durability. These shoes made a significant difference during my hikes, particularly on gnarlier trails while backpacking, including challenging multi-day trips with varying conditions. Their maximal cushioning was a lifesaver after hours on the trail with a heavy pack.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Olympus 6 is fantastic for runs on multiple terrains. It provides a smooth ride on steep, rocky trails with its rugged outsole. The shoe's foot shaped toe box, extra cushioning and breathable uppers kept my feet happy and prevented fatigue on longer runs. Some of the extra accessories of the shoe, such as gaiter compatibility and wide laces, make it versatile for being out on trail for longer periods of time. I found the extra padding provided in the heel/achilles area was unnecessary to the point that could annoy someone if they are more prone to heel slipping in shoes. I would highly recommend this Olympus 6 for anyone wanting a plush feel underfoot when tackling rocky and technical trail runs especially over long distances. They have become my go-to for longer trail runs because my feet fatigue less in the Olympus than any other trail shoe I've tried. ALTRA gave me this free product to try.
After testing out the Olympus 5s and being very disappointed with the sizing (also reflected in many other online reviews) I was super hopeful that Altra fixed the Olympus 6s just in time my late summer Camino Frances. And let me tell you! I love these babies! I’ve walked the full 500+ miles with not a single blister (the only person on the trail I’ve met who can say so). I sized up by half a size. Wore injini toe sock liners. Wore alpaca socks by Paka on top. A dream combo!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] ALTRA gave me this free product to try. I have been wanting to try the larger toe box but unsure about the low drop and the max cushioned and how my feet would react to that. I'm happy to report my feet are very happy in these shoes!! I especially love the "Gaiter Trap" on these shoes! No need to mess with putting my own hook/loop stuff, these have it securely built in. The stack height is larger than I'm used to so I thought I'd trip over nature but nope, not anymore than my normal clumsiness! The cushion is great to keep feet fresh while going the distance. The snug heel hangs on tight to help avoid slippage. The Vibram soles have the perfect grip to keep me upright on mud and wet grass and gravel!
