Starts out disappointing and goes downhill ...
I bought this to try it out and because it is gluten free and has a reasonable amount of protein. I'm writing this review right after eating the meal. It is disappointing they chose to use white rice instead of brown rice. The 'cilantro' is highly aged and has a weird aftertaste that lingers with disappointment. There were only a few chunks of meat, they definitely did not splurge on that. And finally, calling this two servings is a gross misinterpretation of the word serving. I weigh about 150lbs and the entire package barely filled me up. I'm definitely going to need a snack before I get to my next meal. If you were on a mountain and facing a no-evac scenario and this was the only option then yeah, I'd say go for it. Otherwise hit the evac button on your Garmin and hope rescue services get to you out before you have to dig out the Al-Pastor.
Great Flavor
Really enjoyed this one, it rehydrates really well despite adding too little water on accident. Next time I’ll bring some tortilla to make tacos in camp with it. A little spice, filling, well balanced to me
Am I the only one who liked this?
I like cilantro, I like pineapple, I like lime. As other reviewers have mentioned it isn’t heavy on the pork but it certainly isn’t lacking in flavor. While it’s lime-forward, I personally enjoy a punchy mix of spices (holds up if your friend adds too much water). Backpacking meals are sometimes lacking in the flavor department, so I appreciated this one defying the trend. Am buying again :)
Cascade of regret
I pretty much agree with the poor reviews. I had this on the first night of a canoe camping trip where it poured on us so hard my tarp cover grommet broke. You'd think that was the sad part, but no. It was this poor excuse of a meal: barely any meat; too weirdly fake acidic; a mushy pouch of rice; there was pineapple???. Don't recommend. Move along to another brand or flavor. Or maybe taste them all before heading out on the trail.
AWESOME Al Pastor Flavor on the trail!
This is an very good tasting meal with plenty of flavor and protein. One of the best Mexican Food dishes in the freeze-dried category! Love the mix of so many flavors I love in my Mexican Food, all here in one tasty dish on the trail.
Disappointing
I had high hopes for this. It was awful. The spices, whatever they were, trampled all over my taste buds. It simply is a very bad recipe. Mostly rice, I think I saw a piece of pork somewhere in there. I split the bag into two servings, ate one and threw the other serving out. AlpineAire makes some decent meals, this one was a complete fail.
Too acidic
It tastes like it has way way too much lime flavor in it. Unfortunately, I found it to be quite awful. Perhaps if you are super super into extremely acidic, possibly artificial, lime flavor; then maybe this will be your new favorite thing. I, personally, was not a fan.
Back to the drawing board.
Overall a filling meal. Lacks meat and the spice and lime flavors are strong. Definitely needs salt added by the end user. Would not buy again.
